Exodus 32

NEW JERUSALEM	Le Sainte Bible Vigouroux
1 When the people saw that Moses was a long time before coming down the mountain, they gatheredround Aaron and said to him, 'Get to work, make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man whobrought us here from Egypt -- we do not know what has become of him.'	1 Mais le peuple, voyant que Moïse différait longtemps à descendre de la montagne, s'assembla en s'élevant contre Aaron, et lui dit : Viens, fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous ; car pour ce qui est de Moïse, cet homme qui nous a tirés de l'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé.
2 Aaron replied, 'Strip off the gold rings in the ears of your wives and your sons and daughters, andbring them to me.'	2 Aaron leur répondit : Otez les pendants d'(or des) oreilles de vos femmes, de vos fils et de vos filles, et apportez-les-moi.
3 The people al stripped off the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron.	3 (Et) Le peuple fit ce qu'Aaron lui avait commandé et lui apporta les pendants d'oreilles.
4 He received what they gave him, melted it down in a mould and with it made the statue of a calf.'Israel,' the people shouted, 'here is your God who brought you here from Egypt!'	4 Aaron, les ayant pris, les jeta en fonte, et il en forma un veau. Alors les Israélites dirent : Voici tes dieux, ô Israël, qui t'ont tiré de l'Egypte.
5 Observing this, Aaron built an altar before the statue and made this proclamation, 'Tomorrow will be afeast in Yahweh's honour.'	5 Ce qu'Aaron ayant vu, il dressa un autel devant le veau, et il fit crier par un héraut : Demain sera la fête solennelle du Seigneur.
6 Early next morning they sacrificed burnt offerings and brought communion sacrifices. The people thensat down to eat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.	6 (Et) S'étant levés de grand matin, ils offrirent des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques. Tout le peuple s'assit pour manger et pour boire, et ils se levèrent ensuite pour jouer.
7 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go down at once, for your people whom you brought here from Egypthave become corrupt.	7 Alors le Seigneur parla à Moïse et lui dit : Va, descends ; car ton peuple, que tu as (re)tiré de l'Egypte, a péché.
8 They have quickly left the way which I ordered them to fol ow. They have cast themselves a metal calf,worshipped it and offered sacrifice to it, shouting, "Israel, here is your God who brought you here from Egypt!" '	8 Ils se sont bientôt retirés de la voie que tu leur avais montrée ; ils se sont fait un veau en fonte, ils l'ont adoré, et, lui immolant des victimes, ils ont dit : Ce sont là tes dieux, ô Israël, qui t'ont tiré de l'Egypte.
9 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'I know these people; I know how obstinate they are!	9 Le Seigneur dit encore à Moïse : Je vois que ce peuple a la tête dure (d'un cou roide, note).
10 So leave me now, so that my anger can blaze at them and I can put an end to them! I shal make agreat nation out of you instead.'	10 Laisse-moi (faire), afin que la fureur de mon indignation s'allume contre eux et que je les extermine, et je te rendrai le chef d'un grand peuple.
11 Moses tried to pacify Yahweh his God. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'why should your anger blaze at yourpeople, whom you have brought out of Egypt by your great power and mighty hand?	11 Mais Moïse conjurait le Seigneur son Dieu, en disant : Seigneur, pourquoi votre fureur s'allume-t-elle contre votre peuple, que vous avez fait sortir de l'Egypte avec une grande force et une main puissante ?
12 Why should the Egyptians say, "He brought them out with evil intention, to slaughter them in themountains and wipe them off the face of the earth?" Give up your burning wrath; relent over this disasterintended for your people.	12 Ne permettez pas, je vous prie, que les Egyptiens disent : Il les a tirés d'Egypte avec ruse pour les tuer sur les montagnes et pour les exterminer de la terre. Que votre colère s'apaise, et laissez-vous fléchir pour pardonner à l'iniquité de votre peuple.
13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to whom you swore by your very self andmade this promise: "I shal make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven, and this whole country ofwhich I have spoken, I shal give to your descendants, and it wil be their heritage for ever." '	13 Souvenez-vous d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël vos serviteurs, auxquels vous avez juré par vous-même en disant : Je multiplierai votre race (postérité) comme les étoiles du ciel, et je donnerai à votre postérité toute cette terre dont je vous ai parlé, et vous la posséderez pour jamais.
14 Yahweh then relented over the disaster which he had intended to inflict on his people.	14 Alors le Seigneur s'apaisa, et il résolut de ne point faire à son peuple le mal qu'il lui voulait faire (avait dit).
15 Moses turned and came down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands,tablets inscribed on both sides, inscribed on the front and on the back.	15 Moïse revint donc de dessus la montagne, portant en sa main les deux tables du témoignage écrites des deux côtés,
16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing on them was God's writing, engraved on thetablets.	16 qui étaient l'ouvrage du Seigneur ; et l'écriture qui était gravée sur ces tables était aussi de la main de Dieu.
17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, 'There is the sound of battlein the camp!'	17 Or Josué, entendant le tumulte et les cris du peuple, dit à Moïse : On entend dans le camp comme les cris de personnes qui combattent.
18 But he replied: No song of victory is this sound, no lament for defeat this sound; but answeringchoruses I hear!	18 Moïse lui répondit : Ce n'est point là le cri de personnes qui s'exhortent au combat, ni les voix confuses d'hommes qui s'excitent à prendre la fuite ; mais j'entends la voix de personnes qui chantent.
19 And there, as he approached the camp, he saw the calf and the groups dancing. Moses blazed withanger. He threw down the tablets he was holding, shattering them at the foot of the mountain.	19 Et s'étant approché du camp, il vit le veau et les danses. Alors il entra en une grande colère ; il jeta les tables qu'il tenait à la main et les brisa au pied de la montagne.
20 He seized the calf they had made and burned it, grinding it into powder which he scattered on thewater, and made the Israelites drink it.	20 Et prenant le veau qu'ils avaient fait, il le mit dans le feu et le réduisit en poudre ; il jeta cette poudre dans l'eau et il la fit boire aux enfants d'Israël.
21 Moses then said to Aaron, 'What have these people done to you for you to have brought so great asin on them?'	21 Moïse dit ensuite à Aaron : Que t'a fait ce peuple pour que tu attires sur lui un si grand péché ?
22 Aaron replied, 'My lord should not be so angry. You yourself know what a bad state these people arein!	22 Il lui répondit : Que mon seigneur ne s'irrite point, car tu connais ce peuple, et tu sais combien il est porté au mal.
23 They said to me, "Make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man who brought us herefrom Egypt -- we do not know what has become of him."	23 Ils m'ont dit : Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous ; car nous ne savons ce qui est arrivé à ce Moïse qui nous a tirés de l'Egypte.
24 I then said to them, "Anyone with gold, strip it off!" They gave it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf!'	24 Je leur ai dit : Qui d'entre vous a de l'or ? Ils l'ont apporté et me l'ont donné ; je l'ai jeté dans le feu, et ce veau en est sorti.
25 When Moses saw that the people were out of hand -- for Aaron had let them get out of hand to thederision of their enemies al round them-	25 Moïse, voyant donc que le peuple était demeuré tout nu (car Aaron l'avait dépouillé par cette abomination honteuse (ignominie d'ordure) et l'avait mis tout nu au milieu de ses ennemis),
26 Moses then stood at the gate of the camp and shouted, 'Who is for Yahweh? To me!' And al theLevites ral ied round him.	26 se mit à la porte du camp et dit : Si quelqu'un est au Seigneur, qu'il se joigne à moi. Et les enfants de Lévi s'étant tous assemblés autour de lui,
27 He said to them, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "Buckle on your sword, each of you, and go upand down the camp from gate to gate, every man of you slaughtering brother, friend and neighbour." '	27 il leur dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël : Que chaque homme mette son épée à son côté. Passez et repassez au travers du camp d'une porte à l'autre, et que chacun tue son frère, son ami et ses proches (celui qui lui est le plus proche).
28 The Levites did as Moses said, and of the people about three thousand men perished that day.	28 (Et) Les enfants (fils) de Lévi firent ce que Moïse avait ordonné, et il y eut environ vingt-trois mille hommes de tués en ce jour-là.
29 'Today', Moses said, 'you have consecrated yourselves to Yahweh, one at the cost of his son,another of his brother; and so he bestows a blessing on you today.'	29 Alors Moïse leur dit : Vous avez chacun consacré vos mains au Seigneur en tuant votre fils et votre frère, afin que la (une) bénédiction (de Dieu) vous soit donnée.
30 On the fol owing day Moses said to the people, 'You have committed a great sin. But now I shal goup to Yahweh: perhaps I can secure expiation for your sin.'	30 Le lendemain, Moïse dit au peuple : Vous avez commis un très grand péché. Je monterai vers le Seigneur pour voir si je pourrai le fléchir en quelque manière et obtenir le pardon de votre crime.
31 Moses then went back to Yahweh and said, 'Oh, this people has committed a great sin by makingthemselves a god of gold.	31 Et étant retourné vers le Seigneur, il lui dit : Ce peuple a commis un très grand péché, et ils se sont fait des dieux d'or ; mais je vous conjure de leur pardonner cette faute ;
32 And yet, if it pleased you to forgive their sin. . .! If not, please blot me out of the book you havewritten!'	32 ou, si vous ne le faites pas, effacez-moi de votre livre que vous avez écrit.
33 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Those who have sinned against me are the ones I shal blot out of my book.	33 Le Seigneur lui répondit : J'effacerai de mon livre celui qui aura péché contre moi.
34 So now go and lead the people to the place I promised to you. My angel will indeed go at your headbut, on the day of punishment, I shall punish them for their sin.'	34 Mais pour toi, va et conduis ce peuple au lieu que je t'ai dit. Mon ange marchera devant toi, et au jour de la vengeance je visiterai (et punirai) ce péché qu'ils ont commis.
35 And Yahweh punished the people for having made the calf, the one Aaron had made.	35 Le Seigneur frappa donc le peuple pour le crime relatif au veau qu'Aaron leur avait fait.
