1 When the people saw that Moses was a long time before coming down the mountain, they gatheredround Aaron and said to him, 'Get to work, make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man whobrought us here from Egypt -- we do not know what has become of him.'	1 Mas o povo, vendo que Moisés tardava em descer do monte, juntou-se contra Aarão, e disse: Levanta-te, faze-nos um deus que vá diante de nós, parque não sabemos o que aconteceu a Moisés, esse homem que nos tirou da terra do Egipto.
2 Aaron replied, 'Strip off the gold rings in the ears of your wives and your sons and daughters, andbring them to me.'	2 Aarão disse-lhes: Tomai as arrecadas de ouro das orelhas de vossas mulheres, de vossos filhos e de vossas filhas, e trazei-as.
3 The people al stripped off the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron.	3 O povo fez o que lhes mandara, trazendo as arrecadas a Aarão.
4 He received what they gave him, melted it down in a mould and with it made the statue of a calf.'Israel,' the people shouted, 'here is your God who brought you here from Egypt!'	4 Ele, tendo-as tomado, mandou-as fundir, e formou delas um bezerro fundido. Eles disseram: Este, ó Israel, é o teu deus que te tirou da terra do Egipto.
5 Observing this, Aaron built an altar before the statue and made this proclamation, 'Tomorrow will be afeast in Yahweh's honour.'	5 Aarão, vendo isto, erigiu um altar diante do bezerro e clamou: Amanhã é a festa solene do Senhor.
6 Early next morning they sacrificed burnt offerings and brought communion sacrifices. The people thensat down to eat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.	6 Levantando-se pela manhã, ofereceram holocaustos e hóstias pacíficas, e o povo se assentou a comer e a beber, depois levantaram-se para se divertirem.
7 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go down at once, for your people whom you brought here from Egypthave become corrupt.	7 O Senhor falou a Moisés, dizendo; Vai, desce, pois o teu povo, que tiraste da terra do Egipto, pecou.
8 They have quickly left the way which I ordered them to fol ow. They have cast themselves a metal calf,worshipped it and offered sacrifice to it, shouting, "Israel, here is your God who brought you here from Egypt!" '	8 Depressa se apartaram do caminho que lhes mostraste: fizeram para si um bezerro fundido, adoraram-no e, imolando-lhe hóstias, disseram: Este, ó Israel, é o teu deus que te tirou da terra do Egipto.
9 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'I know these people; I know how obstinate they are!	9 O Senhor disse mais a Moisés: Vejo que este povo é de cerviz dura:
10 So leave me now, so that my anger can blaze at them and I can put an end to them! I shal make agreat nation out of you instead.'	10 deixa-me, a fim de que o meu furor se acenda contra eles, e que eu os extermine, e eu te farei chefe de uma grande nação.
11 Moses tried to pacify Yahweh his God. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'why should your anger blaze at yourpeople, whom you have brought out of Egypt by your great power and mighty hand?	11 Moisés, porém, suplicava ao Senhor seu Deus, dizendo: Senhor, porque se acende o teu furor contra o teu povo, que tiraste da terra do Egípto com uma grande fortaleza e com uma poderosa mão?
12 Why should the Egyptians say, "He brought them out with evil intention, to slaughter them in themountains and wipe them off the face of the earth?" Give up your burning wrath; relent over this disasterintended for your people.	12 Não permitas, te rogo, que os Egípcios digam: Ele tirou-os (do Egipto) astutamente para os matar nos montes e exterminar da terra; aplaque-se a tua ira, e perdoa a iniquidade do teu povo.
13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to whom you swore by your very self andmade this promise: "I shal make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven, and this whole country ofwhich I have spoken, I shal give to your descendants, and it wil be their heritage for ever." '	13 Lembra-te de Abraão, de Isaac e de Israel, teus servos, a quem por ti mesmo juraste, dizendo: Multiplicarei a vossa descendência como as estrelas do céu, e darei à vossa posteridade toda esta terra, de que falei, e vós a possuireis para sempre.
14 Yahweh then relented over the disaster which he had intended to inflict on his people.	14 O Senhor se aplacou, e não fez ao seu povo o mal que tinha dito.
15 Moses turned and came down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands,tablets inscribed on both sides, inscribed on the front and on the back.	15 Moisés voltou do monte, levando na mão as duas tábuas do testemunho, escritas de ambas as partes,
16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing on them was God's writing, engraved on thetablets.	16 e feitas por obra de Deus; a escrita gravada nas tábuas era também de Deus.
17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, 'There is the sound of battlein the camp!'	17 Ora Josué, ouvindo o tumulto do povo que gritava, disse para Moisés: Ouve-se um alarido de peleja nos acampamentos.
18 But he replied: No song of victory is this sound, no lament for defeat this sound; but answeringchoruses I hear!	18 Moisés respondeu: Não é clamor de gente que se anima a combater nem clamor de quem excita à fuga, mas eu ouço a voz de gente que canta.
19 And there, as he approached the camp, he saw the calf and the groups dancing. Moses blazed withanger. He threw down the tablets he was holding, shattering them at the foot of the mountain.	19 Tendo-se aproximado dos acampamentos, ao ver o bezerro e as danças, irou-se muito, atirou das suas mãos as tábuas e quebrou-as ao pé do monte.
20 He seized the calf they had made and burned it, grinding it into powder which he scattered on thewater, and made the Israelites drink it.	20 Pegando no bezerro que tinham feito, queimou-o e esmagou-o até o reduzir a pó, que espalhou na água, e deu a beber dele aos filhos de Israel.
21 Moses then said to Aaron, 'What have these people done to you for you to have brought so great asin on them?'	21 Disse a Aarão: Que te fez este povo, para atraires sobre ele um tão grande pecado?
22 Aaron replied, 'My lord should not be so angry. You yourself know what a bad state these people arein!	22 Ele respondeu-lhe: Não se agaste o meu Senhor, porque tu sabes quanto este povo é inclinado para o mal.
23 They said to me, "Make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man who brought us herefrom Egypt -- we do not know what has become of him."	23 Eles disseram-me: Faze-nos um deus que vá diante de nós, porque não sabemos o que aconteceu àquele que nos tirou da terra do Egipto.
24 I then said to them, "Anyone with gold, strip it off!" They gave it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf!'	24 Eu disse-lhes: Qual de vós tem ouro? Trouxeram-no, deram-mo, eu lancei-o no fogo, e saiu este bezerro.
25 When Moses saw that the people were out of hand -- for Aaron had let them get out of hand to thederision of their enemies al round them-	25 Vendo, pois, Moisés que o povo andava desmandado, pois Aarão lhe tinha alargado o freio, expondo-o assim à irrisão dos seus inimigos,
26 Moses then stood at the gate of the camp and shouted, 'Who is for Yahweh? To me!' And al theLevites ral ied round him.	26 colocou-se à porta dos acampamentos e disse: Quem é pelo Senhor junte-se a mim. E ajuntaram-se a ele todos os filhos de Levi.
27 He said to them, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "Buckle on your sword, each of you, and go upand down the camp from gate to gate, every man of you slaughtering brother, friend and neighbour." '	27 Ele disse-lhes: Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Cada um cinja a sua espada ao seu lado; passai e tomai a passar de porta em porta através dos acampamentos, e cada qual mate o seu irmão, o seu amigo, o seu parente.
28 The Levites did as Moses said, and of the people about three thousand men perished that day.	28 Os filhos de Levi fizeram o que Moisés tinha ordenado, e cerca de três mil homens caíram (mortos) naquele dia.
29 'Today', Moses said, 'you have consecrated yourselves to Yahweh, one at the cost of his son,another of his brother; and so he bestows a blessing on you today.'	29 Moisés disse-lhes: Consagrastes hoje as vossas mãos ao Senhor, cada um em seu filho e em seu irmão para vos ser dada a bênção.
30 On the fol owing day Moses said to the people, 'You have committed a great sin. But now I shal goup to Yahweh: perhaps I can secure expiation for your sin.'	30 Ao outro dia Moisés disse ao povo: Vós cometestes o maior pecado; subirei ao Senhor para ver se de algum modo poderei obter perdão para o vosso delito.
31 Moses then went back to Yahweh and said, 'Oh, this people has committed a great sin by makingthemselves a god of gold.	31 Voltando para o Senhor, disse: Oh! Este povo cometeu um grandíssimo pecado! Fizeram um deus de ouro. Perdoa-lhe, porém, esta culpa,
32 And yet, if it pleased you to forgive their sin. . .! If not, please blot me out of the book you havewritten!'	32 ou, se o não fazes, risca-me do teu livro que escreveste.
33 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Those who have sinned against me are the ones I shal blot out of my book.	33 O Senhor respondeu-lhe: Riscarei do meu livro aquele que pecar contra mim.
34 So now go and lead the people to the place I promised to you. My angel will indeed go at your headbut, on the day of punishment, I shall punish them for their sin.'	34 Tu, porém, vai e conduze este povo onde eu te disse: o meu anjo irá diante de ti. No dia da minha visitação, puni-los-ei pelo seu pecado.
35 And Yahweh punished the people for having made the calf, the one Aaron had made.	35 O Senhor feriu, assim, o povo pela culpa do bezerro, que Aarão tinha feito.
