Exodus 1

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 These are the names of the Israelites who went with Jacob to Egypt, each of them went with his family:	1 Voici les noms des Israélites qui entrèrent en Egypte avec Jacob; ils y vinrent chacun avec sa famille:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah,	2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi et Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,	3 Issachar, Zabulon et Benjamin,
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.	4 Dan et Nephtali, Gad et Asher.
5 In all, the descendants of Jacob numbered seventy persons. Joseph was in Egypt already.	5 Les descendants de Jacob étaient, en tout, 70 personnes. Joseph, lui, était déjà en Egypte.
6 Then Joseph died, and his brothers, and all that generation.	6 Puis Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération.
7 But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they became so numerous and powerful that eventually thewhole land was ful of them.	7 Les Israélites furent féconds et se multiplièrent, ils devinrent de plus en plus nombreux et puissants,au point que le pays en fut rempli.
8 Then there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.	8 Un nouveau roi vint au pouvoir en Egypte, qui n'avait pas connu Joseph.
9 'Look,' he said to his people, 'the Israelites are now more numerous and stronger than we are.	9 Il dit à son peuple: "Voici que le peuple des Israélites est devenu plus nombreux et plus puissant quenous.
10 We must take precautions to stop them from increasing any further, or if war should break out, theymight join the ranks of our enemies. They might take arms against us and then escape from the country.'	10 Allons, prenons de sages mesures pour l'empêcher de s'accroître, sinon, en cas de guerre, ilgrossirait le nombre de nos adversaires. Il combattrait contre nous pour, ensuite, sortir du pays."
11 Accordingly they put taskmasters over the Israelites to wear them down by forced labour. In this waythey built the store-cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh.	11 On imposa donc à Israël des chefs de corvée pour lui rendre la vie dure par les travaux qu'ilsexigeraient. C'est ainsi qu'il bâtit pour Pharaon les villes-entrepôts de Pitom et de Ramsès.
12 But the harder their lives were made, the more they increased and spread, until people came to fearthe Israelites.	12 Mais plus on lui rendait la vie dure, plus il croissait en nombre et surabondait, ce qui fit redouter lesIsraélites.
13 So the Egyptians gave them no mercy in the demands they made,	13 Les Egyptiens contraignirent les Israélites au travail
14 making their lives miserable with hard labour: with digging clay, making bricks, doing various kinds offield -- work -- al sorts of labour that they imposed on them without mercy.	14 et leur rendirent la vie amère par de durs travaux: préparation de l'argile, moulage des briques,divers travaux des champs, toutes sortes de travaux auxquels ils les contraignirent.
15 The king of Egypt then spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was cal ed Shiphrah, and theother Puah.	15 Le roi d'Egypte dit aux accoucheuses des femmes des Hébreux, dont l'une s'appelait Shiphra etl'autre Pua:
16 'When you attend Hebrew women in childbirth,' he said, 'look at the two stones. If it is a boy, kil him; ifa girl, let her live.'	16 "Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux, regardez les deux pierres. Si c'est un fils, faites-le mourir, si c'est une fille, laissez-la vivre."
17 But the midwives were God-fearing women and did not obey the orders of the king of Egypt, butal owed the boys to live.	17 Mais les accoucheuses craignirent Dieu, elles ne firent pas ce que leur avait dit le roi d'Egypte etlaissèrent vivre les garçons.
18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, 'What do you mean by al owing theboys to live?'	18 Le roi d'Egypte les appela et leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous agi de la sorte et laissé vivre lesgarçons?"
19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, 'Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women, they are hardy and givebirth before the midwife can get to them.'	19 Elles répondirent à Pharaon: "Les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme les Egyptiennes, ellessont vigoureuses. Avant que l'accoucheuse n'arrive auprès d'elles, elles se sont délivrées."
20 For this, God was good to the midwives, and the people went on increasing and growing morepowerful;	20 Dieu favorisa les accoucheuses; quant au peuple, il devint très nombreux et très puissant.
21 and since the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.	21 Comme les accoucheuses avaient craint Dieu, il leur accorda une postérité.
22 Pharaoh then gave all his people this command: 'Throw every new-born boy into the river, but let allthe girls live.'	22 Pharaon donna alors cet ordre à tout son peuple: "Tout fils qui naîtra, jetez-le au Fleuve, maislaissez vivre toute fille."
