Judith 9

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Judith threw herself face to the ground, scattered ashes on her head, undressed as far as the sackclothshe was wearing and cried loudly to the Lord. At the same time in Jerusalem the evening incense was beingoffered in the Temple of God. Judith said:	1 Tendo eles partido, Judite entrou em seu oratório, pôs o seu cilício, cobriu a cabeça com cinzas e, prostrando-se diante do Senhor, orou dizendo:
2 Lord, God of my ancestor Simeon, you armed him with a sword to take vengeance on the foreigners whohad undone a virgin's belt to her shame, laid bare her thigh to her confusion, violated her womb to herdishonour, since, though you said, 'This must not be,' they did it.	2 Senhor, Deus de meu pai Simeão, que lhe destes a espada para se vingar dos estrangeiros que, arrastados pela paixão, violaram uma virgem, descobrindo-lhe vergonhosamente a nudez;
3 For this you handed their leaders over to slaughter, and their bed, defiled by their treachery, was itselfbetrayed in blood. You struck the slaves with the chieftains and the chieftains with their retainers.	3 que entregastes suas mulheres à rapina, suas filhas ao cativeiro, e todos os seus despojos em partilha aos vossos servos que ardiam de zelo ao vosso serviço, vinde, eu vos peço, ó Senhor meu Deus, e socorrei esta viúva.
4 You left their wives to be carried off, their daughters to be taken captive, and their spoils to be shared outamong the sons you loved, who had been so zealous for you, had loathed the stain put on their blood and cal edon you for help. O God, my God, now hear this widow too;	4 Vós dispusestes os acontecimentos do passado, determinastes que uns sucedessem a outros, e nada aconteceu sem que vós o quisésseis.
5 for you have made the past, and what is happening now, and what will fol ow. What is, what wil be, youhave planned; what has been, you designed.	5 Todos os vossos caminhos são previamente escolhidos, e os vossos juízos são marcados por vossa providência.
6 Your purposes stood forward; 'See, here we are!' they said. For al your ways are prepared and yourjudgements delivered with foreknowledge.	6 Olhai agora para o acampamento dos assírios, como vos dignastes outrora olhar para o dos egípcios, quando corriam armados atrás dos vossos servos, fiando-se nos seus carros, nos. seus cavaleiros e na multidão dos seus combatentes.
7 See the Assyrians, with their army abounding glorying in their horses and their riders, exulting in thestrength of their infantry. Trust as they may in shield and spear, in bow and sling, in you they have notrecognised the Lord, the breaker of battle-lines;	7 Bastou um vosso olhar sobre o seu acampamento para paralisá-los nas trevas.
8 yours alone is the title of Lord. Break their violence with your might, in your anger bring down theirstrength. For they plan to profane your holy places, to defile the tabernacle, the resting place of your gloriousname, and to hack down the horn of your altar.	8 O abismo reteve os seus pés, e as águas submergiram-nos.
9 Observe their arrogance, send your fury on their heads, give the strength I have in mind to this widow'shand.	9 Senhor, que o mesmo aconteça a estes que confiam no seu número, nos seus carros, nos seus dardos, nos seus escudos, nas suas flechas, e que são orgulhosos de suas lanças.
10 By guile of my lips strike down slave with master, and master with retainer. Break their pride by awoman's hand.	10 Eles ignoram que vós sóis o nosso Deus, vós que desde todo o tempo sabeis deter as guerras, e que vosso nome é o Senhor.
11 Your strength does not lie in numbers, nor your might in strong men; since you are the God of thehumble, the help of the oppressed, the support of the weak, the refuge of the forsaken, the Saviour of thedespairing.	11 Levantai o vosso braço como nos tempos antigos e quebrai o seu. poder com a vossa força; caia diante de vossa cólera o poder daqueles que prometeram a si próprios violar o vosso santuário, profanar o tabernáculo
12 Please, please, God of my father, God of the heritage of Israel, Master of heaven and earth, Creator ofthe waters, King of your whole creation, hear my prayer.	12 Fazei, Senhor, que o orgulho desse homem seja cortado com sua própria espada;
13 Give me a beguiling tongue to wound and kill those who have formed such cruel designs against yourcovenant, against your holy dwelling-place, against Mount Zion, against the house belonging to your sons.	13 seja ele preso no laço de seus olhos fixos em mim; e feri-o com as doces palavras de meus lábios.
14 And demonstrate to every nation, every tribe, that you are the Lord, God of al power, al might, and thatthe race of Israel has no protector but you.	14 Dai firmeza ao meu coração para o desprezar, e coragem para o abater.
	15 Isso será para o vosso nome uma glória digna de memória, tendo-o derrubado a mão de uma mulher.
	16 Não é na multidão, Senhor, que está o vosso poder, nem vos comprazeis na força dos cavalos; os soberbos nunca vos agradaram, mas sempre vos foram aceitas as preces dos mansos e humildes.
	17 Deus do céu, criador das águas e senhor de toda a criação, ouvi uma pobre suplicante que só confia em vossa misericórdia.
	18 Lembrai-vos, Senhor, de vossa promessa; inspirai as palavras de minha boca e dai firmeza à resolução de meu coração, para que a vossa casa vos permaneça (para sempre) consagrada e que todos os povos reconheçam que só vós sois Deus e que não há outro fora de vós.
