Judith 9

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Judith threw herself face to the ground, scattered ashes on her head, undressed as far as the sackclothshe was wearing and cried loudly to the Lord. At the same time in Jerusalem the evening incense was beingoffered in the Temple of God. Judith said:	1 Allora Giuditta cadde con la faccia a terra e spargendo cenere sul suo capo mise allo scoperto il sacco che aveva indossato. Era l'ora in cui nella casa di Dio a Gerusalemme veniva offerto il sacrificio vespertino e Giuditta ad alta voce gridò al Signore:
2 Lord, God of my ancestor Simeon, you armed him with a sword to take vengeance on the foreigners whohad undone a virgin's belt to her shame, laid bare her thigh to her confusion, violated her womb to herdishonour, since, though you said, 'This must not be,' they did it.	2 "Signore, Dio del padre mio Simeone, cui desti in mano una spada per far vendetta degli stranieri che avevano sciolto la cintura di una vergine per contaminarla, ne avevano denudato il fianco per disonorarla e ne avevano violato il grembo per infliggerle ignominia; perché tu hai detto: "Non sarà così", ed essi lo fecero.
3 For this you handed their leaders over to slaughter, and their bed, defiled by their treachery, was itselfbetrayed in blood. You struck the slaves with the chieftains and the chieftains with their retainers.	3 Per questo consegnasti i loro capi alla morte e al sangue, quel giaciglio macchiato del loro inganno, ripagato con inganno; hai percosso gli schiavi con i capi e i capi sui loro troni.
4 You left their wives to be carried off, their daughters to be taken captive, and their spoils to be shared outamong the sons you loved, who had been so zealous for you, had loathed the stain put on their blood and cal edon you for help. O God, my God, now hear this widow too;	4 Hai consegnato le loro donne alla rapina, le loro figlie alla deportazione e tutte le loro spoglie alla distribuzione tra i figli da te prediletti, poiché essi bruciando di zelo per te detestarono la profanazione del loro sangue e ti invocarono chiamandoti in aiuto. Dio, Dio mio, ascolta anche me che sono vedova!
5 for you have made the past, and what is happening now, and what will fol ow. What is, what wil be, youhave planned; what has been, you designed.	5 Tu infatti hai operato tali fatti come i precedenti e i seguenti; tu hai disposto le cose presenti e le future e ciò che hai predisposto si è avverato.
6 Your purposes stood forward; 'See, here we are!' they said. For al your ways are prepared and yourjudgements delivered with foreknowledge.	6 Le cose da te volute si fecero innanzi e dissero: "Eccoci qui", poiché tutte le tue vie sono preparate e i tuoi giudizi sono determinati in precedenza.
7 See the Assyrians, with their army abounding glorying in their horses and their riders, exulting in thestrength of their infantry. Trust as they may in shield and spear, in bow and sling, in you they have notrecognised the Lord, the breaker of battle-lines;	7 Ecco, infatti, gli Assiri si sono gonfiati nella loro potenza, vanno orgogliosi dei loro cavalli e cavalieri, si vantano del valore dei loro fanti, pongono la loro fiducia negli scudi, nelle frecce e negli archi e non sanno che tu sei il Signore, che disperdi le guerre.
8 yours alone is the title of Lord. Break their violence with your might, in your anger bring down theirstrength. For they plan to profane your holy places, to defile the tabernacle, the resting place of your gloriousname, and to hack down the horn of your altar.	8 Signore è il tuo nome. Abbatti la loro forza con la tua potenza, infrangi il loro potere con il tuo furore, poiché hanno deciso di profanare il tuo santuario, di contaminare il tabernacolo in cui riposa il tuo nome glorioso, di abbattere con il ferro il corno del tuo altare.
9 Observe their arrogance, send your fury on their heads, give the strength I have in mind to this widow'shand.	9 Guarda la loro alterigia, fa' cadere la tua ira sulle loro teste, metti nella mia mano di vedova la forza di compiere ciò che ho progettato.
10 By guile of my lips strike down slave with master, and master with retainer. Break their pride by awoman's hand.	10 Con l'inganno delle mie labbra colpisci il servo insieme al padrone e il padrone insieme al suo ministro; abbatti la loro tracotanza per mano di una donna!
11 Your strength does not lie in numbers, nor your might in strong men; since you are the God of thehumble, the help of the oppressed, the support of the weak, the refuge of the forsaken, the Saviour of thedespairing.	11 La tua forza, infatti, non sta nel numero, né la tua signoria si appoggia sui violenti; tu invece sei il Dio degli umili, sei il soccorritore dei piccoli, il difensore dei deboli, il protettore dei derelitti, il salvatore dei disperati.
12 Please, please, God of my father, God of the heritage of Israel, Master of heaven and earth, Creator ofthe waters, King of your whole creation, hear my prayer.	12 Sì, sì, o Dio del padre mio, o Dio d'Israele, tua eredità, signore del cielo e della terra, creatore delle acque, re di ogni tua creatura, ascolta la mia preghiera!
13 Give me a beguiling tongue to wound and kill those who have formed such cruel designs against yourcovenant, against your holy dwelling-place, against Mount Zion, against the house belonging to your sons.	13 Fa' che la mia lusinghiera parola diventi una ferita e un colpo mortale per coloro che hanno progettato aspri disegni contro la tua alleanza, il tuo tempio consacrato, contro il monte Sion e la casa in cui dimorano i tuoi figli.
14 And demonstrate to every nation, every tribe, that you are the Lord, God of al power, al might, and thatthe race of Israel has no protector but you.	14 Fa' che tutto il tuo popolo e ogni tribù conosca che tu sei Dio, il Dio di ogni potenza e forza, e non c'è altri all'infuori di te che possa proteggere la stirpe d'Israele".
