NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 They therefore sent envoys to him to sue for peace, to say,	1 Allora i re e principi di tutte le città e province, della Siria cioè di Mesopotamia, della Siria di Sobal, della Libia e della Cilicia, mandarono i loro ambasciatori, i quali vennero ad Oloferne e gli dissero:
2 'We are servants of the great King Nebuchadnezzar; we lie prostrate before you. Treat us as you thinkfit.	2 « Cessi la tua indignazione contro di noi. Perchè è meglio per noi servire da vivi il gran re Nabucodonosor, ed essere a te soggetti, che morire, ed insieme alla morte soffrire i danni del noatro servaggio.
3 Our cattle-farms, al our land, al our wheat fields, our flocks and herds, all the sheep-folds in ourencampments are at your disposal. Do with them as you please.	3 Tutte le nostre città, tutt'i possessi, tutti i monti, colline e campi, armenti di bovi e greggi di pecore e capre, cavalli e cammelli, e tutte le nostre sostanze e famiglie sono a tua disposizione.
4 Our towns and their inhabitants too are at your service; go and treat them as you think fit.'	4 Tutte le nostre cose siano in tuo potere.
5 These men came to Holofernes and delivered the message as above.	5 Noi ed i figli nostri siamo tuoi servi.
6 He then made his way down to the coast with his army and stationed garrisons in al the fortified towns,levying outstanding men there as auxiliaries.	6 Vieni a noi come pacifico signore, e serviti di noi come ti piacerà ».
7 The people of these cities and of al the other towns in the neighbourhood welcomed him, wearinggarlands and dancing to the sound of tambourines.	7 Allora Oloferne discese dai monti co' suoi cavalieri e gran forze, e s'impadronì di tutte le città, e di tutti gli abitanti della regione,
8 But he demolished their shrines and cut down their sacred trees, carrying out his commission to destroyal local gods so that the nations should worship Nebuchadnezzar alone and people of every language andnationality should hail him as a god.	8 e da ogni città si prese come ausiliari gli uomini forti ed atti alla guerra.
9 Thus he reached the edge of Esdraelon, in the neighbourhood of Dothan, a vil age facing the great ridgeof Judaea.	9 Or quelle province furon prese da tanta paura, che gli abitanti di tutte le città, principi e maggiorenti insieme col popolo, uscivano incontro a lui quando veniva,
10 He pitched camp between Geba and Scythopolis and stayed there a ful month to re-provision hisforces.	10 ricevendolo con corone e con faci, ed intrecciando danze con timpani e flauti.
	11 Ma nemmeno così facendo poteron mitigare la ferocia del suo cuore.
	12 Perchè distrusse le loro città, e tagliò i boschi sacri,
	13 avendogli comandato il re Nabucodonosor di sterminare tutti gli dèi della terra per esser egli solo salutato dio da quei popoli che la potenza di Oloferne avesse potuto soggiogare,
	14 Traversata dunque la Siria di Sobal, tutta l'Apamea e tutta la Mesopotamia, venne nell'Idumea nella terra di Gabaa,
	15 ne prese tutte le città, e vi si fermò per trenta giorni, durante i quali comandò che sì radunasse tutto l'esercito con tutte le sue forze.
