NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 They therefore sent envoys to him to sue for peace, to say,	1 Gl'inviarono perciò messaggeri con proposte di pace in questi termini:
2 'We are servants of the great King Nebuchadnezzar; we lie prostrate before you. Treat us as you thinkfit.	2 "Ecco, noi i servitori del gran re Nabucodònosor, ci mettiamo davanti a te, fa' di noi ciò che è gradito al tuo cospetto.
3 Our cattle-farms, al our land, al our wheat fields, our flocks and herds, all the sheep-folds in ourencampments are at your disposal. Do with them as you please.	3 Ecco le nostre abitazioni, ogni nostro podere, tutti i campi di grano, le greggi, gli armenti e tutte le mandrie dei nostri attendamenti sono a tua disposizione, sèrvitene come ti piace.
4 Our towns and their inhabitants too are at your service; go and treat them as you think fit.'	4 Anche le nostre città e i loro abitanti sono tuoi servitori, vieni e trattali nel modo migliore che credi".
5 These men came to Holofernes and delivered the message as above.	5 Si presentarono dunque ad Oloferne quegli uomini e gli riferirono tali parole.
6 He then made his way down to the coast with his army and stationed garrisons in al the fortified towns,levying outstanding men there as auxiliaries.	6 Allora discese con il suo esercito verso la costa, costituendo presidi nelle città fortificate e prelevando da esse uomini scelti come ausiliari.
7 The people of these cities and of al the other towns in the neighbourhood welcomed him, wearinggarlands and dancing to the sound of tambourines.	7 Gli abitanti di quelle città e di tutta la regione circostante lo accolsero con corone, danze e al suono di timpani.
8 But he demolished their shrines and cut down their sacred trees, carrying out his commission to destroyal local gods so that the nations should worship Nebuchadnezzar alone and people of every language andnationality should hail him as a god.	8 Ma egli demolì tutti i templi e tagliò i loro boschi sacri, perché aveva avuto il compito di distruggere tutti gli dèi della terra, in modo che tutti i popoli adorassero solo Nabucodònosor e tutte le lingue e tribù lo invocassero come dio.
9 Thus he reached the edge of Esdraelon, in the neighbourhood of Dothan, a vil age facing the great ridgeof Judaea.	9 Poi giunse dinanzi a Esdrelon, vicino a Dotain, che si trova di fronte alla grande catena montuosa della Giudea.
10 He pitched camp between Geba and Scythopolis and stayed there a ful month to re-provision hisforces.	10 Si accamparono tra Gebe e Scitopoli e Oloferne rimase là un mese intero per poter raccogliere tutto il vettovagliamento per il suo esercito.
