NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.	1 Quindi Giuditta disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, fratelli! Prendete questa testa e appendetela sugli spalti delle vostre mura.
2 When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leavethe town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advancedpost. But you must not do this.	2 Quando poi apparirà la luce del mattino e il sole sorgerà sulla terra, ognuno prenda la propria armatura di guerra e ogni uomo valido esca dalla città. Iniziate l'azione contro di loro come se voleste scendere nella pianura contro l'avanguardia degli Assiri, ma in realtà non scenderete.
3 The Assyrians wil gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; theyin turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and fleeat your advance.	3 Questi, prendendo le loro armature, accorreranno nel loro accampamento e sveglieranno i generali dell'esercito assiro, si precipiteranno verso la tenda di Oloferne, ma non lo troveranno; si lasceranno prendere dal terrore e fuggiranno davanti a noi.
4 Al you and the others who live in the territory of Israel wil have to do is to give chase and slaughterthem as they retreat.	4 Allora voi e tutti gli abitanti dell'intero territorio d'Israele inseguiteli e abbatteteli sul loro cammino.
5 'But before you do this, cal me Achior the Ammonite, for him to see and identify the man who held theHouse of Israel in contempt, the man who sent him to us as someone already doomed to die.'	5 Ma prima di compiere ciò, chiamatemi Achior, l'ammonita, perché veda e riconosca colui che ha disprezzato la casa d'Israele e che l'ha inviato tra noi per destinarlo alla morte".
6 So they had Achior brought from Uzziah's house. No sooner had he arrived and seen the head ofHolofernes held by a member of the people's assembly than he fel on his face in a faint.	6 Fu fatto venire Achior dalla casa di Ozia. Quando venne e vide la testa di Oloferne nella mano di un uomo in mezzo all'assemblea del popolo, cadde bocconi a terra e svenne.
7 They lifted him up. He then threw himself at Judith's feet and, prostrate before her, exclaimed: May yoube blessed in al the tents of Judah and in every nation; those who hear your name wil be seized with dread!	7 Quando l'ebbero risollevato, si gettò ai piedi di Giuditta e prostrato davanti a lei disse: "Benedetta sei tu in tutte le tende di Giuda e fra tutti i popoli, che saranno presi da meraviglia quando udranno il tuo nome!
8 'Now tel me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people,Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.	8 Ora raccontami tutto quanto hai compiuto in questi giorni". Giuditta, stando in mezzo al popolo, gli raccontò tutto ciò che aveva fatto dal giorno in cui si era allontanata fino al momento in cui parlava loro.
9 When she came to the end, the people cheered at the top of their voices until the town echoed.	9 Quando ebbe cessato di parlare, il popolo scoppiò in alte esclamazioni di giubilo e riempì la città di grida festose.
10 Achior, recognising al that the God of Israel had done, believed ardently in him and, acceptingcircumcision, was permanently incorporated into the House of Israel.	10 Achior, vedendo quanto aveva fatto il Dio d'Israele, credette fermamente in Dio, si fece circoncidere la carne del prepuzio e fu aggregato alla casa d'Israele fino al presente.
11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they alwent out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.	11 Quando spuntò il mattino, appesero la testa di Oloferne alle mura; ognuno impugnò le proprie armi e quindi, distribuiti in schiere, uscirono verso i pendii della montagna.
12 Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, thecaptains of thousands and al the other officers;	12 Quando li videro, gli Assiri mandarono ad informare i loro capi; questi corsero dai generali, dai chiliarchi e da tutti gli ufficiali.
13 and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'	13 Poi si recarono alla tenda di Oloferne e dissero a colui che era preposto a tutte le sue cose: "Sveglia il nostro signore, perché quegli schiavi hanno avuto l'ardire di scendere a battaglia contro di noi, per farsi annientare completamente".
14 Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping withJudith.	14 Bagoa entrò e bussò alla cortina della tenda; pensava infatti che egli dormisse con Giuditta.
15 But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him throwndown dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.	15 Siccome nessuno si faceva sentire, aprì, entrò nella camera e lo trovò morto, disteso al suolo senza la testa che gli era stata portata via.
16 He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.	16 Allora si mise a gridare con pianti e lamenti urlando con forza e strappandosi le vesti.
17 He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing outto the men, he shouted,	17 Poi entrò nella tenda dove era alloggiata Giuditta e non la trovò. Allora si precipitò fuori davanti al popolo gridando:
18 'The slaves have rebel ed! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House ofNebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'	18 "Quegli schiavi hanno agito perfidamente! Una sola donna ebrea ha gettato la vergogna sulla casa del re Nabucodònosor. Ecco, Oloferne giace a terra e la testa non è più su di lui!".
19 When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and thecamp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.	19 Udite queste parole, i capi dell'esercito assiro lacerarono i loro mantelli con l'animo completamente sconvolto ed elevarono in mezzo all'accampamento altissime grida e urla di dolore.
