NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.	1 Judith leur dit: "Ecoutez-moi, frères. Prenez cette tête, suspendez-la au faîte de vos remparts.
2 When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leavethe town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advancedpost. But you must not do this.	2 Puis, quand l'aube aura paru et que le soleil sera levé sur la terre, prenez chacun vos armes et quetout homme valide sorte de la ville. Sur cette troupe établissez un chef, tout comme si vous vouliez descendredans la plaine vers le poste avancé des Assyriens. Mais ne descendez pas.
3 The Assyrians wil gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; theyin turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and fleeat your advance.	3 Les Assyriens prendront leur équipement, gagneront leur camp et éveilleront les chefs de leurarmée. On se précipitera alors vers la tente d'Holopherne et on ne le trouvera pas. La frayeur s'emparera d'eux etils fuiront devant vous.
4 Al you and the others who live in the territory of Israel wil have to do is to give chase and slaughterthem as they retreat.	4 Vous, et tous ceux qui habitent dans le territoire d'Israël, vous n'aurez plus qu'à les poursuivre et àles abattre dans leur retraite.

7 They lifted him up. Il se jeta alors aux pieds de Judith et, se prosternant devant elle, s'écria: "Bénie sois-tudans toutes les tentes de Juda et parmi tous les peuples; ceux qui entendront prononcer ton nom seront saisisd'effroi!
8 'Now tel me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people,Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.	8 Et maintenant dis-moi ce que tu as fait durant ces jours." Et Judith lui raconta, au milieu de tout lepeuple, tout ce qu'elle avait fait depuis le jour de sa sortie de Béthulie jusqu'au moment où elle parlait.

11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they alwent out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.	11 Quand l'aube parut, les gens de Béthulie pendirent la tête d'Holopherne au rempart. Chacun prit sesarmes et tous sortirent par bandes sur les pentes de la montagne.
12 Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, thecaptains of thousands and al the other officers;	12 Ce que voyant, les Assyriens dépêchèrent des messagers vers leurs chefs qui, à leur tour, serendirent chez les stratèges, les chiliarques et tous leurs officiers.
13 and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'	13 On parvint ainsi jusqu'à la tente d'Holopherne. "Eveille notre maître, dit-on à son intendant. Cesesclaves ont osé descendre vers nous et nous attaquer pour se faire complètement massacrer."
14 Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping withJudith.	14 Bagoas entra donc. Il frappa des mains devant le rideau de la tente, pensant qu'Holopherne dormaitavec Judith.
15 But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him throwndown dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.	15 Mais comme personne ne semblait rien entendre, il ouvrit et pénétra dans la chambre à coucher etle trouva jeté sur le seuil, mort, la tête coupée.
16 He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.	16 Il poussa alors un grand cri, pleura, sanglota, hurla et déchira ses vêtements,
17 He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing outto the men, he shouted,	17 puis pénétra dans la tente où logeait Judith et ne la trouva pas. Alors, s'élançant dans la foule, ilcria:
18 'The slaves have rebel ed! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House ofNebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'	18 "Ah! les esclaves se sont rebellés! Une femme des Hébreux a couvert de honte la maison deNabuchodonosor. Holopherne gît à terre, décapité!"
19 When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and thecamp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.	19 A ces mots les chefs de l'armée d'Assur, l'esprit complètement bouleversé, déchirèrent leurstuniques et firent retentir le camp de leurs cris et de leurs clameurs.
