1 Judith said, 'Listen to me, brothers. Take this head and hang it on your battlements.	1 Judith leur dit: “Écoutez-moi, frères, prenez cette tête et suspendez-la au créneau du rempart.
2 When morning comes and the sun is up, let every man take his arms and every able-bodied man leavethe town. Appoint a leader for them, as if you meant to march down to the plain against the Assyrian advancedpost. But you must not do this.	2 Et lorsque le jour se lèvera, lorsque le soleil paraîtra sur la terre, que chacun prenne ses armes. Tous les hommes valides sortiront de la ville avec un chef à leur tête, comme si vous alliez descendre dans la plaine vers les avant-postes des Assyriens. Mais vous ne descendrez pas.
3 The Assyrians wil gather up their equipment, make for their camp and wake up their commanders; theyin turn will rush to the tent of Holofernes and not be able to find him. They will then be seized with panic and fleeat your advance.	3 Alors ils prendront leurs armes, ils iront au camp pour réveiller les généraux de l’armée d’Assyrie, et ceux-ci à leur tour courront vers la tente d’Holoferne. En ne le voyant pas, ils seront pris de panique et prendront la fuite devant vous.
4 Al you and the others who live in the territory of Israel wil have to do is to give chase and slaughterthem as they retreat.	4 Alors vous les poursuivrez, vous et tous ceux qui habitent sur le territoire d’Israël et vous les abattrez sur les chemins.

Lorsqu’il fut là et qu’il vit la tête d’Holoferne que l’un des hommes de l’assemblée tenait à la main, il tomba la face contre terre, évanoui.
7 They lifted him up. He then threw himself at Judith's feet and, prostrate before her, exclaimed: May yoube blessed in al the tents of Judah and in every nation; those who hear your name wil be seized with dread!	7 On le releva; alors il se jeta aux pieds de Judith et se prosterna devant elle en disant: “Bénie sois-tu dans tous les foyers de Juda et parmi tous les peuples! Tous ceux qui entendront prononcer ton nom, seront frappés d’étonnement.
8 'Now tel me everything that you have done in these past few days.' And surrounded by the people,Judith told him everything she had done from the day she left Bethulia to the moment when she was speaking.	8 Maintenant, dis-moi ce que tu as fait durant ces jours.” Et Judith lui raconta devant tout le peuple ce qu’elle avait fait, depuis le jour où elle était sortie jusqu’à ce moment où elle leur parlait.
9 When she came to the end, the people cheered at the top of their voices until the town echoed.	9 Quand elle eut cessé de parler, le peuple acclama à grands cris et fit entendre dans toute la ville des cris de joie.
10 Achior, recognising al that the God of Israel had done, believed ardently in him and, acceptingcircumcision, was permanently incorporated into the House of Israel.	10 En voyant ce que le Dieu d’Israël avait fait, Akior crut fermement en Dieu et se fit circoncire; c’est ainsi qu’il est entré dans le peuple d’Israël.
11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the ramparts. Every man took his arms and they alwent out in groups to the slopes of the mountain.	11 Au lever du jour, on accrocha la tête d’Holoferne au rempart; tous les hommes prirent leurs armes et sortirent par groupes vers les pentes de la montagne.
12 Seeing this, the Assyrians sent word to their leaders, who in turn reported to the generals, thecaptains of thousands and al the other officers;	12 Lorsque les Assyriens les aperçurent, ils partirent prévenir leurs chefs. Ceux-ci allèrent trouver les généraux et tous les officiers supérieurs.
13 and these in their turn reported to the tent of Holofernes. 'Rouse our master,' they said to his major-domo, 'these slaves have dared to march down on us to attack -- and to be wiped out to a man!'	13 Eux se présentèrent à la tente d’Holoferne et dirent à celui qui était chargé de toutes ses affaires: “Réveille notre seigneur! Ce peuple d’esclaves est maintenant assez téméraire pour descendre et nous attaquer! Ils veulent vraiment se faire massacrer jusqu’au dernier.”
14 Bagoas went inside and struck the curtain dividing the tent, thinking that Holofernes was sleeping withJudith.	14 Bagoas entra et frappa des mains à la porte de la tente, car il pensait qu’Holoferne dormait avec Judith.
15 But as no one seemed to hear, he drew the curtain and went into the bedroom, to find him throwndown dead on the threshold, with his head cut off.	15 Mais comme personne ne semblait répondre, il écarta la tenture, entra dans la chambre à coucher et le trouva par terre, mort et décapité.
16 He gave a great shout, wept, sobbed, shrieked and rent his clothes.	16 Il poussa un cri déchirant, il pleurait, gémissait, hurlait, déchirait ses vêtements.
17 He then went into the tent which Judith had occupied and could not find her either. Then, rushing outto the men, he shouted,	17 Puis il entra dans la tente où logeait Judith: elle n’était plus là. Alors il sortit comme un fou vers l’armée en criant:
18 'The slaves have rebel ed! A single Hebrew woman has brought shame on the House ofNebuchadnezzar. Holofernes is lying dead on the ground, without his head!'	18 “Ces esclaves nous ont eus! Une seule femme de chez les Hébreux a couvert de honte la maison du roi Nabukodonozor! Holoferne est sur le sol, sans tête!”
19 When they heard this, the leaders of the Assyrian army tore their tunics in consternation, and thecamp rang with their wild cries and their shouting.	19 En entendant cela, les chefs de l’armée d’Assyrie déchirèrent leurs vêtements; ils en étaient si bouleversés qu’ils se lamentaient et poussaient de grands cris au milieu du camp!
