NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 The tale of Tobit son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of the lineage of Asiel andtribe of Naphtali.	1 Historia de Tobit, hijo de Tobiel, hijo de Ananiel, hijo de Aduel, hijo de Gabael, del linaje de Asiel, de la tribu de Neftalí,
2 In the days of Shalmaneser king of Assyria, he was exiled from Thisbe, which is south of Kedesh-Naphtali in Upper Galilee, above Hazor, some distance to the west, north of Shephat.	2 que en tiempo de Salmanasar, rey de Asiria, fue deportado de Tibé, que queda al sur de Cadés de Neftalí, en la Galilea superior, por encima de Jasor, detrás del camino del oeste y al norte de Sefat.
3 I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works al the days of my life. I have given much inalms to my brothers and fel ow country-folk, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria.	3 Yo, Tobit, he andado por caminos de verdad y en justicia todos los días de mi vida y he repartido muchas limosmas entre mis hermanos y compatriotas, deportados conmigo a Nínive, al país de los asirios.
4 In my young days, when I was still at home in the land of Israel, the whole tribe of Naphtali my ancestorbroke away from the House of David and from Jerusalem, though this was the city chosen out of al the tribes ofIsrael for their sacrifices; here, the Temple -- God's dwelling-place -- had been built and hallowed for algenerations to come.	4 Siendo yo joven todavía y estando en mi país, en la tierra de Israel, toda la tribu de mi padre Neftalí se apartó de la casa de David y de Jerusalén, la ciudad elegida entre todas las tribus de Israel para ofrecer allí sacrificios y en la que había sido edificado y consagrado, para todas las generaciones venideras, el Templo de la Morada del Altísimo.
5 All my brothers and the House of Naphtali sacrificed on every hil -top in Galilee to the calf thatJeroboam king of Israel had made at Dan.	5 Todos mis hermanos y la casa de mi padre Neftalí ofrecían sacrificios al becerro que Jeroboam, rey de Israel, había hecho en Dan, en los montes de Galilea.
6 Often I was quite alone in making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, fulfil ing the Law that binds al Israelperpetual y. I would hurry to Jerusalem with the first yield of fruits and beasts, the tithe of cattle and the sheep'sfirst shearings.	6 Muchas veces era yo el único que iba a Jerusalén, con ocasión de las fiestas, tal como está prescrito para todo Israel por decreto perpetuo; en cobrando las primicias y las crías primeras y diezmos de mis bienes y el primer esquileo de mis ovejas, acudía presuroso a Jerusalén
7 I would give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, for the altar. To the Levites ministering atJerusalem I would give my tithe of wine and corn, olives, pomegranates and other fruits. Six years in successionI took the second tithe in money and went and paid it annual y at Jerusalem.	7 y se lo entregaba a los sacerdotes, hijos de Aarón, para el altar. Daba a los levitas, que hacían el servicio en Jerusalén, el diezmo del vino, del grano, del olivo, de los granados, de los higos y demás frutales; tomaba en metálico el segundo diezmo, de los seis años, y lo gastaba en Jerusalén.
8 I gave the third to orphans and widows and to the strangers who live among the Israelites; I brought itthem as a gift every three years. When we ate, we obeyed both the ordinances of the law of Moses and theexhortations of Deborah the mother of our ancestor Ananiel; for my father had died and left me an orphan.	8 Entregaba el tercer diezmo a los huérfanos, a las viudas y a los prosélitos que vivían con los israelitas; se lo llevaba y entregaba cada tres años, celebrando una comida con ellos conforme a lo que se prescribe en la Ley de Moisés y conforme a los preceptos que me dio Débora, madre de nuestro padre Ananiel, pues mi padre había muerto dejándome huérfano.
9 When I came to man's estate, I married a woman from our kinsfolk whose name was Anna; she boreme a son whom I cal ed Tobias.	9 En llegando a edad adulta, me casé con Ana, mujer de nuestra parentela; y ella dio a luz a Tobías.
10 When the banishment into Assyria came, I was taken away and went to Nineveh. Al my brothers andthe people of my race ate the food of the heathen,	10 Cuando la deportación de Asiria, yo también fui deportado y me trasladé a Nínive. Todos mis hermanos y los de mi linaje comían los manjares de los gentiles,
11 but for my part I was careful not to eat the food of the heathen.	11 más yo me guardé bien de comerlos.
12 And because I had kept faith with my God with my whole heart,	12 Como yo me acordaba de Dios con toda mi alma,
13 the Most High granted me the favour of Shalmaneser, and I became the king's purveyor.	13 me concedió el Altísimo gracia y favor ante Salmanasar, y llegué a ser procurador suyo.
14 Until his death I used to travel to Media, where I transacted business on his behalf, and I depositedsacks of silver worth ten talents with Gabael the brother of Gabrias at Rhages in Media.	14 Me trasladé a Media y administré allí sus negocios hasta su muerte; y desposité en Ragués de Media, en casa de Gabael, hermano de Gabrí, unos sacos de plata por valor de diez talentos.
15 On the death of Shalmaneser his son Sennacherib succeeded; the roads into Media were barred, andI could no longer go there.	15 Muerto Salmanasar, le sucedió en el trono su hijo Senaquerib; en su reinado, los caminos de Media se hicieron inseguros y no pude volver allí.
16 In the days of Shalmaneser I had often given alms to the people of my race;	16 En los días de Salmanasar hice yo muchas limosmas a mis hermanos de raza;
17 I gave my bread to the hungry and clothes to those who lacked them; and I buried, when I saw them,the bodies of my country-folk thrown over the wal s of Nineveh.	17 di mi pan a los hambrientos y vestido a los desnudos; y si veía el cadaver de alguno de los de mi raza arrojado extramuros de Nínive, le daba sepultura.
18 I also buried those who were kil ed by Sennacherib. When Sennacherib was beating a disorderlyretreat from Judaea after the King of heaven had punished his blasphemies, he kil ed a great number ofIsraelites in his rage. So I stole their bodies to bury them; Sennacherib looked for them and could not find them.	18 Enterré igualmente a los que mató Senaquerib (cuando vino huyendo de Judea después del escarmiento que hizo contra él el Rey del Cielo, a causa de sus blasfemias. Senaquerib, en su cólera, mandó matar a muchos israelitas); y yo sustraje sus cuerpos y los enterré. Senaquerib los buscó sin encontrarlos.
19 A Ninevite went and told the king it was I who had buried them secretly. When I knew that the king hadbeen told about me and saw myself being hunted by men who would put me to death, I was afraid and fled.	19 Un ninivita fue a denunciarme al rey de que yo los había enterrado en secreto. Cuando supe que el rey tenía informes acerca de mí, y que me buscaba para matarme, tuve miedo y escapé.
20 Al my goods were seized; they were al confiscated by the treasury; nothing was left me but my wifeAnna and my son Tobias.	20 Me fueron arrebatados todos mis bienes; nada quedó sin confiscar para el tesoro real, salvo mi mujer Ana y mi hijo Tobías.
21 Less than forty days after this, the king was murdered by his two sons, who then fled to the mountainsof Ararat. His son Esarhaddon succeeded. Ahikar the son of my brother Anael, was appointed chancellor of theexchequer for the kingdom and given the main ordering of affairs.	21 Aún no habían transcurrido cuarenta días, cuando Senaquerib fue asesinado por sus dos hijos, que huyeron luego hacia los montes Ararat. Le sucedió su hijo Asarjaddón. Asarjaddón puso a Ajikar, hijo de mi hermano Anael, al frente de las finanzas de su reino, de modo que dirigía toda la administración.
22 Ahikar then interceded for me and I was al owed to return to Nineveh, since Ahikar had been chiefcupbearer, keeper of the signet, administrator and treasurer under Sennacherib king of Assyria, and Esarhaddon had kept him in office. He was a relation of mine; he was my nephew.	22 Ajikar intercedió por mí y pude regresar a Nínive. Ajikar, de hecho, había sido copero mayor, custodio del sello, administrador y encargado de las finanzas bajo Senaquerib, rey de Asiria; y Asarjaddón le confirmó en los cargos.
