NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The tale of Tobit son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of the lineage of Asiel andtribe of Naphtali.	1 Libro de los hechos de Tobit, hijo de Tobiel, hijo de Ananiel, hijo de Aduel, hijo de Gabael, hijo de Rafael, hijo de Ragüel, de la descendencia de Asiel, de la tribu de Neftalí.
2 In the days of Shalmaneser king of Assyria, he was exiled from Thisbe, which is south of Kedesh-Naphtali in Upper Galilee, above Hazor, some distance to the west, north of Shephat.	2 En tiempos de Salmanasar, rey de Asiria, Tobit fue deportado de Tisbé, que está al sur de Cades de Neftalí, en la Alta Galilea, más arriba de Hasor, hacia el oeste, y al norte de Sefet.
3 I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works al the days of my life. I have given much inalms to my brothers and fel ow country-folk, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria.	3 Yo, Tobit, seguí los caminos de la verdad y de la justicia todos los días de mi vida. Hice muchas limosnas a mis hermanos y a mis compatriotas deportados conmigo a Nínive, en el país de los Asirios.
4 In my young days, when I was still at home in the land of Israel, the whole tribe of Naphtali my ancestorbroke away from the House of David and from Jerusalem, though this was the city chosen out of al the tribes ofIsrael for their sacrifices; here, the Temple -- God's dwelling-place -- had been built and hallowed for algenerations to come.	4 Cuando yo era joven y vivía en mi país, en la tierra de Israel, toda la tribu de mi antepasado Neftalí se había separado de la casa de David y de Jerusalén, la ciudad elegida entre todas las tribus de Israel para ofrecer sacrificios, donde se había edificado y consagrado para todas las generaciones futuras el Templo en el que habita Dios.
5 All my brothers and the House of Naphtali sacrificed on every hil -top in Galilee to the calf thatJeroboam king of Israel had made at Dan.	5 Todos mis hermanos y la familia de Neftalí, ofrecían sacrificio sobre todas las montañas de Galilea al ternero que Jeroboam, rey de Israel, había hecho en Dan.
6 Often I was quite alone in making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, fulfil ing the Law that binds al Israelperpetual y. I would hurry to Jerusalem with the first yield of fruits and beasts, the tithe of cattle and the sheep'sfirst shearings.	6 Muchas veces yo era el único que iba en peregrinación a Jerusalén, conforme a la prescripción que obliga para siempre a todo Israel. Me apresuraba a llevar a Jerusalén las primicias de los frutos y de los animales, el diezmo del ganado y las primicias de la esquila de las ovejas.
7 I would give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, for the altar. To the Levites ministering atJerusalem I would give my tithe of wine and corn, olives, pomegranates and other fruits. Six years in successionI took the second tithe in money and went and paid it annual y at Jerusalem.	7 Entregaba todo eso a los sacerdotes, hijos de Aarón, para los sacrificios del altar. A los levitas que cumplían sus funciones en Jerusalén, les entregaba el diezmo del vino y del trigo, del olivo, de las granadas y de los otros frutos. Cambiaba por dinero el segundo diezmo e iba a gastarlo cada año a Jerusalén.
8 I gave the third to orphans and widows and to the strangers who live among the Israelites; I brought itthem as a gift every three years. When we ate, we obeyed both the ordinances of the law of Moses and theexhortations of Deborah the mother of our ancestor Ananiel; for my father had died and left me an orphan.	8 El tercer diezmo lo daba a los huérfanos, a las viudas y a los prosélitos que vivían con los israelitas: lo repartía cada tres años, y los comíamos, siguiendo las prescripciones de la Ley de Moisés y las instrucciones de Débora, madre de nuestro antepasado Ananiel, porque mi padre había muerto, dejándome huérfano.
9 When I came to man's estate, I married a woman from our kinsfolk whose name was Anna; she boreme a son whom I cal ed Tobias.	9 Cuando me hice hombre, me casé con una mujer de la descendencia de nuestros padres que se llamaba Ana, y de ella tuve un hijo, al que llamé Tobías.
10 When the banishment into Assyria came, I was taken away and went to Nineveh. Al my brothers andthe people of my race ate the food of the heathen,	10 Después que me deportaron a Asiria y fui llevado cautivo, llegué a Nínive. Todos mis hermanos y mis compatriotas comían los manjares de los paganos.
11 but for my part I was careful not to eat the food of the heathen.	11 Pero yo me cuidaba muy bien de comer esos manjares.
12 And because I had kept faith with my God with my whole heart,	12 Y como me acordaba de mi Dios de todo corazón,
13 the Most High granted me the favour of Shalmaneser, and I became the king's purveyor.	13 el Altísimo me concedió el favor de Salmanasar, y llegué a ser el encargado de sus compras.
14 Until his death I used to travel to Media, where I transacted business on his behalf, and I depositedsacks of silver worth ten talents with Gabael the brother of Gabrias at Rhages in Media.	14 Yo iba a Media y hacía las compras, hasta que él murió. En una ocasión, dejé en casa de Gabael, hermano de Gabrí, en el país de los Medos, unas bolsas con diez talentos de plata.
15 On the death of Shalmaneser his son Sennacherib succeeded; the roads into Media were barred, andI could no longer go there.	15 Al morir Salmanasar, reinó en lugar de él su hijo Senaquerib. Entonces se interrumpieron las comunicaciones con Media, y ya no pude volver allí.
16 In the days of Shalmaneser I had often given alms to the people of my race;	16 En tiempos de Salmanasar, yo hacía muchas limosnas a mis compatriotas,
17 I gave my bread to the hungry and clothes to those who lacked them; and I buried, when I saw them,the bodies of my country-folk thrown over the wal s of Nineveh.	17 Daba mi pan a los hambrientos, vestía a los que estaban desnudos y enterraba a mis compatriotas, cuando veía que sus cadáveres eran arrojados por encima de las murallas de Nínive.
18 I also buried those who were kil ed by Sennacherib. When Sennacherib was beating a disorderlyretreat from Judaea after the King of heaven had punished his blasphemies, he kil ed a great number ofIsraelites in his rage. So I stole their bodies to bury them; Sennacherib looked for them and could not find them.	18 También enterré a los que mandó matar Senaquerib cuando tuvo que huir de Judea, después del castigo que le infligió el Rey del Cielo por todas las blasfemias que había proferido. Lleno de cólera, Senaquerib mató a muchos israelitas: yo ocultaba sus cuerpos para enterrarlos, y aunque él los buscaba, no podía encontrarlos.
19 A Ninevite went and told the king it was I who had buried them secretly. When I knew that the king hadbeen told about me and saw myself being hunted by men who would put me to death, I was afraid and fled.	19 Un ninivita informó al rey que era yo el que los enterraba clandestinamente. Cuando supe que el rey estaba informado de eso y que me buscaba para matarme, tuve miedo y me escapé.
20 Al my goods were seized; they were al confiscated by the treasury; nothing was left me but my wifeAnna and my son Tobias.	20 Todos mis bienes fueron embargados y confiscados para el tesoro real: no me quedó nada, excepto mi esposa Ana y mi hijo Tobías.
21 Less than forty days after this, the king was murdered by his two sons, who then fled to the mountainsof Ararat. His son Esarhaddon succeeded. Ahikar the son of my brother Anael, was appointed chancellor of theexchequer for the kingdom and given the main ordering of affairs.	21 Pero antes de cuarenta días, el rey fue asesinado por sus dos hijos, que luego huyeron a los montes de Ararat. Su hijo Asaradón, reinó en lugar de él y confió a Ajicar, hijo de mi hermano Anael, la contabilidad y la administración general del reino.
22 Ahikar then interceded for me and I was al owed to return to Nineveh, since Ahikar had been chiefcupbearer, keeper of the signet, administrator and treasurer under Sennacherib king of Assyria, and Esarhaddon had kept him in office. He was a relation of mine; he was my nephew.	22 Entonces Ajicar intercedió por mí y pude volver a Nínive. Bajo el reinado de Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, él había sido copero mayor, guardasellos, administrador y contador, y Asaradón lo confirmó en esos cargos. El pertenecía a mi familia, era mi sobrino.
