NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The tale of Tobit son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of the lineage of Asiel andtribe of Naphtali.	1 Storia di Tobi, figlio di Tòbiel, figlio di Anàniel, figlio di A'duel, figlio di Gàbael, della famiglia di A'siel, della tribù di Neftali.
2 In the days of Shalmaneser king of Assyria, he was exiled from Thisbe, which is south of Kedesh-Naphtali in Upper Galilee, above Hazor, some distance to the west, north of Shephat.	2 Al tempo di Salmanàssar, re degli Assiri, egli fu deportato da Tisbe, che si trova a sud di Kades di Neftali, nell'alta Galilea, sopra Casor, verso occidente, a nord di Safet.
3 I, Tobit, have walked in paths of truth and in good works al the days of my life. I have given much inalms to my brothers and fel ow country-folk, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria.	3 Io, Tobi, mi comportai con sincerità e giustizia per tutto il tempo della mia vita e feci molte elemosine ai miei parenti e ai compatrioti che furono deportati con me a Ninive, nel paese degli Assiri.
4 In my young days, when I was still at home in the land of Israel, the whole tribe of Naphtali my ancestorbroke away from the House of David and from Jerusalem, though this was the city chosen out of al the tribes ofIsrael for their sacrifices; here, the Temple -- God's dwelling-place -- had been built and hallowed for algenerations to come.	4 Da giovane, quando mi trovavo in Israele, mia patria, tutta la tribù del mio antenato, Neftali, si separò dalla dinastia di Davide e da Gerusalemme, la città scelta tra tutte le tribù d'Israele come luogo dei loro sacrifici, essendo stato ivi edificato e consacrato per tutte le generazioni future il tempio, dimora dell'Altissimo.
5 All my brothers and the House of Naphtali sacrificed on every hil -top in Galilee to the calf thatJeroboam king of Israel had made at Dan.	5 Tutti i miei parenti e la casa di Neftali, mio antenato, offrivano sacrifici al vitello che Geroboamo, re d'Israele,
6 Often I was quite alone in making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, fulfil ing the Law that binds al Israelperpetual y. I would hurry to Jerusalem with the first yield of fruits and beasts, the tithe of cattle and the sheep'sfirst shearings.	6 aveva collocato in Dan, sulle montagne di Galilea; molte volte io ero l'unico che andavo a Gerusalemme per le feste, come prescrive a tutto Israele una legge perpetua. Correvo a Gerusalemme con le primizie dei frutti e degli animali, con le decime del bestiame e con la prima lana delle pecore.
7 I would give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, for the altar. To the Levites ministering atJerusalem I would give my tithe of wine and corn, olives, pomegranates and other fruits. Six years in successionI took the second tithe in money and went and paid it annual y at Jerusalem.	7 Consegnavo tutto per il culto ai sacerdoti figli di Aronne, mentre le decime del grano, del vino, dell'olio, delle melagrane, dei fichi e degli altri frutti le consegnavo ai leviti che officiavano a Gerusalemme. Per sei anni consecutivi cambiavo in denaro la seconda decima e andavo ogni anno a spenderla a Gerusalemme.
8 I gave the third to orphans and widows and to the strangers who live among the Israelites; I brought itthem as a gift every three years. When we ate, we obeyed both the ordinances of the law of Moses and theexhortations of Deborah the mother of our ancestor Ananiel; for my father had died and left me an orphan.	8 La terza decima la davo ogni tre anni agli orfani, alle vedove ed ai proseliti aggregati ad Israele. La consumavamo insieme secondo la prescrizione della legge di Mosè concernente le decime e secondo le istruzioni date da Debora, madre di Anàniel, nostro nonno, perché mio padre morì lasciandomi orfano.
9 When I came to man's estate, I married a woman from our kinsfolk whose name was Anna; she boreme a son whom I cal ed Tobias.	9 Giunto all'età adulta, presi in moglie Anna, una donna della mia parentela e da essa ebbi un figlio, cui diedi il nome di Tobia.
10 When the banishment into Assyria came, I was taken away and went to Nineveh. Al my brothers andthe people of my race ate the food of the heathen,	10 Dopo che mi deportarono in Assiria, andai come prigioniero a Ninive.
11 but for my part I was careful not to eat the food of the heathen.	11 Tutti i miei parenti e compatrioti mangiavano i cibi dei pagani, io invece mi guardavo bene dal farlo.
12 And because I had kept faith with my God with my whole heart,	12 Siccome rimasi fedele a Dio con tutto il cuore,
13 the Most High granted me the favour of Shalmaneser, and I became the king's purveyor.	13 l'Altissimo mi fece guadagnare il favore di Salmanàssar, diventando suo provveditore.
14 Until his death I used to travel to Media, where I transacted business on his behalf, and I depositedsacks of silver worth ten talents with Gabael the brother of Gabrias at Rhages in Media.	14 Finché egli rimase in vita, solevo andare nella Media e fare ivi compere per suo conto. Così depositai a Rage di Media presso Gàbael, un mio parente, figlio di Gabri, dei sacchetti di denaro del valore di dieci talenti d'argento.
15 On the death of Shalmaneser his son Sennacherib succeeded; the roads into Media were barred, andI could no longer go there.	15 Quando morì Salmanàssar, suo figlio Sennàcherib gli successe sul trono. Le strade della Media si chiusero e io non potei ritornarvi.
16 In the days of Shalmaneser I had often given alms to the people of my race;	16 Al tempo di Salmanàssar avevo fatto molte elemosine ai miei compatrioti;
17 I gave my bread to the hungry and clothes to those who lacked them; and I buried, when I saw them,the bodies of my country-folk thrown over the wal s of Nineveh.	17 davo il pane agli affamati, vestivo gli ignudi; se vedevo qualcuno dei miei connazionali morto e gettato dietro le mura di Ninive, lo seppellivo.
18 I also buried those who were kil ed by Sennacherib. When Sennacherib was beating a disorderlyretreat from Judaea after the King of heaven had punished his blasphemies, he kil ed a great number ofIsraelites in his rage. So I stole their bodies to bury them; Sennacherib looked for them and could not find them.	18 Seppellii anche coloro che Sennàcherib aveva ucciso, quando ritornò fuggendo dalla Giudea; il Re del cielo lo castigò per le sue bestemmie ed egli nel suo furore uccise molti Israeliti; io sottraevo i loro corpi e li seppellivo, mentre Sennàcherib li faceva cercare, ma invano.
19 A Ninevite went and told the king it was I who had buried them secretly. When I knew that the king hadbeen told about me and saw myself being hunted by men who would put me to death, I was afraid and fled.	19 Senonché uno degli abitanti di Ninive andò a denunciarmi al re, che ero io che li avevo sepolti. Mi nascosi dunque, ma quando seppi che il re era al corrente del fatto ed ero ricercato per essere messo a morte, ebbi paura e presi la fuga.
20 Al my goods were seized; they were al confiscated by the treasury; nothing was left me but my wifeAnna and my son Tobias.	20 Furono confiscati tutti i miei beni, che passarono in blocco al tesoro reale; non mi fu lasciata che la moglie Anna con il mio figlio Tobia.
21 Less than forty days after this, the king was murdered by his two sons, who then fled to the mountainsof Ararat. His son Esarhaddon succeeded. Ahikar the son of my brother Anael, was appointed chancellor of theexchequer for the kingdom and given the main ordering of affairs.	21 Ma non passarono quaranta giorni che il re fu assassinato da due dei suoi figli, i quali poi fuggirono sui monti dell'Ararat. Gli successe allora sul trono il figlio Assaraddon. Questi pose Achikar, figlio di mio fratello A'nael, a capo di tutte le finanze del regno con autorità su tutta l'amministrazione.
22 Ahikar then interceded for me and I was al owed to return to Nineveh, since Ahikar had been chiefcupbearer, keeper of the signet, administrator and treasurer under Sennacherib king of Assyria, and Esarhaddon had kept him in office. He was a relation of mine; he was my nephew.	22 Allora Achikar intercedette per me e potei ritornare a Ninive. Durante il regno di Sennàcherib di Assiria, Achikar era stato gran coppiere, guardasigilli, capo dell'amministrazione e della contabilità e Assaraddon l'aveva mantenuto in carica. Egli era mio nipote, uno della mia parentela.
