¹ The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. It happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year,while I was in the citadel of Susa,	¹ Palavras (ou história) de Neemias, filho de Helquias. Aconteceu no mês de Casleu, no ano vigésimo (do rei Artaxerxes Longimano) que eu estava no castelo de Susa.
² that Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with some men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews --those who had escaped and those who survived from the captivity -- and about Jerusalem.	² Chegou Hanani, um de meus irmãos, com alguns homens de Judá, a quem perguntei pelos Judeus que tinham ficado, que sobreviviam ainda depois do cativeiro, e acerca de Jerusalém.
³ They replied, 'The survivors remaining there in the province since the captivity are in a very bad anddemoralised condition: the wal s of Jerusalem are in ruins and its gates have been burnt down.'	³ Eles responderam-me: Os que ficaram, depois do cativeiro, e foram deixados lá na província, estão numa grande aflição e em ignomínia; os muros de Jerusalém foram destruídos, e as suas portas consumidas pelo fogo.
⁴ On hearing this I sat down and wept; for some days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God ofheaven.	⁴ Quando ouvi estas palavras, sentei-me, chorei e estive como em luto muitos dias. Jejuei e orei, na presença do Deus do céu,
⁵ I said, 'Yahweh, God of heaven -- the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps a covenant of faithfullove with those who love him and obey his commandments-	⁵ dizendo: "Peço-te, Senhor Deus do céu, forte, grande e terrível, que guardas o teu pacto e a tua misericórdia para com aqueles que te amam e observam os teus mandamentos,
⁶ let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to listen to your servant's prayer, which I now offer to youday and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I admit the sins of the Israelites, which we havecommitted against you. Both I and my father's House have sinned;	⁶ que os teus ouvidos estejam atentos e os teus olhos se abram para ouvires a oração que eu, teu servo, estou fazendo na tua presença, de noite e de dia, pelos filhos de Israel, teus servos, confessando os pecados dos filhos de Israel, com os quais te temos ofendido. Em realidade, eu e a casa de meu pai pecámos.
⁷ we have acted very wickedly towards you by not keeping the commandments, laws and rulings whichyou enjoined on your servant Moses.	⁷ Ofendemos-te gravemente, não guardámos os mandamentos, as leis, as ordenações, que prescreveste a teu servo Moisés.
⁸ Remember, I beg you, the promise which you solemnly made to your servant Moses, "If you areunfaithful, I shal scatter you among the peoples;	⁸ Lembra-te da palavra que deste a Moisés, teu servo, quando disseste: Se vós prevaricardes, eu vos espalharei entre os povos;
⁹ but if you come back to me and keep my commandments and practise them, even though those whohave been banished are at the very sky's end, I shal gather them from there and bring them back to the placewhich I have chosen as a dwel ing-place for my name."	⁹ mas, se vos converterdes a mim, se guardardes os meus preceitos e os cumprirdes, ainda que tenhais sido espalhados até às extremidades do mundo, eu vos juntarei desses países e vos reconduzirei ao lugar que escolhi para nele habitar o meu nome.
¹⁰ Since they are your servants, your people, whom you have redeemed with your mighty power andstrong hand,	¹⁰ "Estes são teus servos e teu povo, que tu resgataste com a tua grande força e com a tua mão poderosa.
¹¹ O Lord, let your ear now be attentive to your servant's prayer and to the prayer of your servants whowant to revere your name. I beg you let your servant be successful today and win this man's compassion.' At thetime I was cupbearer to the king.	¹¹ Peço-te, Senhor, que estejam atentos os teus ouvidos à oração do teu servo e às súplicas dos teus servos, que querem temer o teu nome. Digna-te, agora, fazer que seja bem sucedido o teu servo, faze-o achar misericórdia diante deste homem ." Eu era copeiro do rei.
