Nehemiah 1

1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. It happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year,while I was in the citadel of Susa,	1 Storia di Nehemia figliuolo di Helcia. Io mi trovava l'anno ventesimo, il mese di Chasleu, nel castello di Susa;
2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with some men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews --those who had escaped and those who survived from the captivity -- and about Jerusalem.	2 Quando venne Hanani, uno de' miei fratelli, con alcuni uomini di Giuda: e io domandai ad essi nuove riguardo' ai Giudei, che restavano, ed erano avanzati alla cattività, e riguardo a Gerusalemme.
3 They replied, 'The survivors remaining there in the province since the captivity are in a very bad anddemoralised condition: the wal s of Jerusalem are in ruins and its gates have been burnt down.'	3 E quelli mi dissero: Quelli, che sono rimasi dalla cattività, e sono stati lasciati nella provincia, sono in afflizione, e ignominia: e le mura di Gerusalemme sono per terra, e le sue porte sono state consunte dalle fiamme.
4 On hearing this I sat down and wept; for some days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God ofheaven.	4 Udite queste parole io mi posi a sedere, e piansi, e mi afflissi per molti giorni: e digiunava, e faceva orazione dinanzi al Dio del cielo;
5 I said, 'Yahweh, God of heaven -- the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps a covenant of faithfullove with those who love him and obey his commandments-	5 E diceva: Io ti prego, o Signore Dio del cielo, forte, grande, e terribile che mantieni il patto con quei, che ti amano, e osservano i tuoi comandamenti:
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to listen to your servant's prayer, which I now offer to youday and night on behalf of your servants the Israelites. I admit the sins of the Israelites, which we havecommitted against you. Both I and my father's House have sinned;	6 Porgi le tue orecchie, e apri gli occhi tuoi, e ascolta l'orazione del tuo servo, la quale io in questo tempo a te rivolgo di giorno, e di notte pe' figliuoli d'Israele tuoi servi, confessando i peccati dei figliuoli a Israele, co' quali hanno offeso te: io, e la casa del padre mio abbiamo peccato.
7 we have acted very wickedly towards you by not keeping the commandments, laws and rulings whichyou enjoined on your servant Moses.	7 La vanità ci sedusse, e noi non osservammo i tuoi comandamenti, e le ceremonie, e i precetti intimati da te a Mosè tuo servo.
8 Remember, I beg you, the promise which you solemnly made to your servant Moses, "If you areunfaithful, I shal scatter you among the peoples;	8 Ricordati della parola data da te a Mosè tuo servo, quando dicesti: Se voi sarete prevaricatori, io vi dispergerò tralle genti.
9 but if you come back to me and keep my commandments and practise them, even though those whohave been banished are at the very sky's end, I shal gather them from there and bring them back to the placewhich I have chosen as a dwel ing-place for my name."	9 Ma se tornerete a me, e osserverete i miei precetti, e gli adempirete, quand'anche foste trasportati agli ultimi confini del mondo, io di là vi riunirò, e vi ricondurrò al luogo eletto da me, perchè portasse il mio nome.
10 Since they are your servants, your people, whom you have redeemed with your mighty power andstrong hand,	10 Or questi son servi tuoi, e tuo popolo redento dalla tua gran possanza, e dal robusto tuo braccio.
11 O Lord, let your ear now be attentive to your servant's prayer and to the prayer of your servants whowant to revere your name. I beg you let your servant be successful today and win this man's compassion.' At thetime I was cupbearer to the king.	11 Io ti prego, o Signore, sian le tue orecchie intente alla orazione del tuo servo, e alle preghiere de' servi tuoi, i quali son risoluti di temere il nome tuo: e assisti oggi il tuo servo, e fa, ch'ei trovi misericordia presso quest' uomo Perocché io era coppiere del re.
