I assembled them near the canal which runs to Ahava, where we camped for three days. I noticedlaymen and priests, but I could not discover any Levites there.15 Congregavi autem eos ad fluvium, qui decurrit ad Ahava, et mansimus ibitribus diebus.
and sent them to Iddo, the leading man of a place cal ed Casiphia; I told them what they were to say toIddo and his kinsmen, living at the place cal ed Casiphia, that is, to provide us with people to serve the Temple ofour God.17 Et misi eos ad Eddo, qui estprimus in Chasphiae loco, et posui in ore eorum verba, quae loquerentur ad Eddoet fratres eius, ut adducerent nobis ministros domus Dei nostri.
And because the hand of God was good to us, they sent us a wise man of the sons of Mahli son ofLevi, son of Israel, a certain Sherebiah with his sons and kinsmen: eighteen men;18 Etadduxerunt nobis per manum Dei nostri bonam super nos virum doctissimum defiliis Moholi filii Levi filii Israel nomine Serebiam et filios eius et fratreseius decem et octo
also Hashabiah and with him his brother Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari with his kinsmen and sons:twenty men;19 et Hasabiam et cum eo Iesaiam de filiis Merari filiosqueeius et fratres eius viginti
and two hundred and twenty temple slaves -- descendants of the temple slaves whom David and theprinces had assigned to serve the Levites -- all of them designated by name.20 et de oblatis, quos dederant David et principesad ministeria Levitarum, ducentos viginti viros; omnes hi suis nominibusrecensiti sunt.
There, beside the Ahava Canal, I then proclaimed a fast, to humble ourselves before our God and topray to him for a successful journey for us, our dependants and all our belongings.21 Et praedicavi ibi ieiunium iuxta fluvium Ahava, ut affligeremur coram Deonostro et peteremus ab eo iter prosperum nobis et filiis nostris universaequesubstantiae nostrae.
For I should have been ashamed to ask the king for a company of cavalry to protect us from hostilepeople on our road, as we had already said to the king, 'The hand of our God is over al who seek him for theirprotection, but his mighty retribution befal s al those who forsake him.'22 Erubui enim petere a rege praesidium et equites, quidefenderent nos ab inimico in via, quia dixeramus regi: “ Manus Dei nostri estsuper omnes, qui quaerunt eum in bonitate, et potentia eius et fortitudo eiussuper omnes, qui derelinquunt eum ”.
So we fasted and pleaded with our God about this, and he heard us.23 Ieiunavimus autem et rogavimus Deumnostrum per hoc, et evenit nobis prospere.
I next chose twelve of the leading priests, and also Sherebiah and Hashabiah with ten of their kinsmen.24 Et separavi de principibus sacerdotum duodecim, Serebiam et Hasabiam et cumeis de fratribus eorum decem,
To them I weighed out the silver, the gold and the utensils, the contributions which the king, hiscounsel ors, his notables and al the Israelites there present had made for the Temple of our God.25 appendique eis argentum et aurum et vasa:tributum domus Dei nostri, quod obtulerat rex et consiliatores eius et principeseius universusque Israel eorum, qui ibi inveniebantur.
To them I weighed out and handed over six hundred and fifty talents of silver, one hundred utensils ofsilver valued at two talents, one hundred talents of gold,26 Et appendi in manibuseorum argenti talenta sescenta quinquaginta et vasa argentea centum, quaehabebant talenta duo, auri centum talenta,
twenty golden bowls valued at a thousand darics and two utensils of fine burnished copper as preciousas gold.27 et crateres aureos viginti, quihabebant solidos millenos, et vasa aeris fulgentis optimi duo pretiosa ut aurum.
I said to them, 'You are consecrated to Yahweh; these utensils are consecrated too; the silver and gold are a voluntary offering to Yahweh, God of your ancestors.28 Et dixi eis: “ Vos sancti Domini, et vasa sancta et argentum et aurumconsecrata Domino, Deo patrum nostrorum;
Guard them carefully until you weigh them out to the leading priests, the Levites, and the heads offamilies of Israel in Jerusalem in the rooms of the Temple of Yahweh.'29 vigilate et custodite, donecappendatis coram principibus sacerdotum et Levitarum et ducibus familiarumIsrael in Ierusalem, in habitaculis domus Domini ”.
The priests and Levites then took charge of the silver, the gold and the utensils thus weighed, to bringthem to Jerusalem to the Temple of our God.30 Susceperunt autemsacerdotes et Levitae pondus argenti et auri et vasorum, ut deferrent Ierusalemin domum Dei nostri.
On the twelfth day of the first month we left the Ahava Canal to make our way to Jerusalem; the handof our God was over us and protected us from enemies and surprise attacks on our way.31 Promovimus ergo a flumine Ahava duodecimo die mensis primi, ut pergeremusIerusalem; et manus Dei nostri fuit super nos et liberavit nos de manu inimiciet insidiatoris in via,
When we arrived in Jerusalem, we rested for three days.32 et venimus Ierusalem et mansimus ibi tribus diebus.
On the fourth day the silver, the gold and the utensils were weighed in the Temple of our God andhanded over to the priest Meremoth son of Uriah and, with him, Eleazar son of Phinehas; with them were theLevites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.33 Die autem quarta appensum est argentum et aurum et vasa in domo Dei nostriper manum Meremoth filii Uriae sacerdotis et cum eo Eleazar filius Phineescumque eis Iozabad filius Iesua et Noadia filius Bennui Levitae,
By number and weight al was there. The total weight was recorded at the same time.34 iuxtanumerum et pondus omnia; descriptumque est omne pondus. In tempore illo,
When the exiles arrived from their captivity, they offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel -- twelvebulls on behalf of all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-two lambs, and as a sin offering twelve he-goats: the wholeof this as a burnt offering to Yahweh.35 quivenerant de captivitate, filii transmigrationis, obtulerunt holocautomata DeoIsrael, vitulos duodecim pro omni populo Israel, arietes nonaginta sex, agnosseptuaginta septem, hircos pro peccato duodecim: omnia in holocaustum Domino.
They also delivered the king's instructions to the king's satraps and the governors of Transeuphrates, who then supported the people and the Temple of God.36 Dederunt autem edicta regis satrapis regis et ducibus trans flumen etsublevaverunt populum et domum Dei.
