1 When the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah andJerusalem in the name of the God of Israel who was over them,	1 E profetarono nel nome di Dio d'Israele il profeta Aggeo, e Zacharia figliuolo di Addo ai Giudei, che erano nella Giudea, e in Gerusalemme.
2 Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak began rebuilding the Temple of God inJerusalem; with them were the prophets of God, supporting them.	2 E allora Zorobabel figliuolo di Salatihel, e Josuè figliuolo di Josedec si accinsero a riprendere la fabbrica del tempio di Dio in Gerusalemme, e i profeti di Dio eran con essi, e prestavano loro la mano.
3 It was then that Tattenai governor of Transeuphrates, Shethar-Bozenai and their associates came tothem and asked, 'Who gave you the order to rebuild this Temple and complete this structure?	3 E nello stesso tempo venne a trovarli Thathanai, che comandava oltre il fiume, e Stharbuzanai coi loro consiglieri, e disser loro: Chi vi ha consigliati a edificar questa casa, e a rimettere in piedi le sue mura?
4 What are the names of the men putting up this building?'	4 Sopra di che noi rispondemmo loro, nominando quegli uomini, che eran gli autori di questa riedificazione.
5 But the eyes of their God were watching over the elders of the Jews, so they were not forced to stopuntil a report could reach Darius and an official reply about the matter could be received from him.	5 Ma l'occhio del loro Dio si rivolse verso gli anziani de' Giudei, e coloro non poterono fare ad essi divieto. E fu concordato, che la cosa fosse esposta a Dario, e allora si rispondesse a quelle accuse.
6 A copy of the letter which Tattenai, governor of Transeuphrates, Shethar-Bozenai and his associates,the officials in Transeuphrates, sent to King Darius.	6 Copia della lettera scritta al re Dario da Thathanai governatore del paese di là dal fiume, e da Stharbuzanai, e da suoi consiglieri gli Arphasachei, che erano di là dal fiume.
7 They sent him a report which ran as fol ows: 'To King Darius, hearty greetings!	7 La lettera diceva così: Al re Dario ogni bene.
8 'The king should be informed that we went to the province of Judah, to the Temple of the great God,which is being rebuilt with large stones; beams are being embedded in the walls; the work is being carried outenergetical y and is making good progress.	8 Sappi, o Re, che noi siamo andati nella provincia della Giudea alla casa del Dio grande, la quale si fabbrica di pietre non lavorate, e si interpongono de' legnami nelle mura: e l'opera si va continuando con sollecitudine, e si avanza tralle loro mani.
9 Questioning these elders, we asked them, "Who gave you permission to rebuild this Temple andcomplete this structure?"	9 Noi pertanto interrogammo que' seniori, e dicemmo loro: Chi ha dato a voi facoltà di edificar questa casa, e di ristaurar queste mura?
10 We also asked them their names, to inform you, so that we could record the names of the men whowere their leaders.	10 E oltre a ciò abbiam voluto sapere i loro nomi, affine di notificargli a te; onde ti scriviamo i nomi di quegli uomini, che han maggioranza tra loro.
11 'They gave us the fol owing answer, "We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth; we arerebuilding the Temple built many years ago, which a great king of Israel had built and completed.	11 Or eglino ci han risposto in tal guisa: Noi siamo servi del Dio del cielo, e della terra, e riedifichiamo un tempio, il quale era stato già tempo edificato, dappoiché un Re grande d'Israele lo avea innalzato, e costrutto.
12 But because our ancestors angered the God of heaven, he handed them over to Nebuchadnezzar theChaldaean king of Babylon who destroyed this Temple and deported the people to Babylon.	12 Ma avendo i padri nostri provocato a sdegno il Dio del cielo, ei li diede in potere di Nabuchodonosor re di Babilonia, Caldeo, il quale distrusse ancor questa casa, e trasferì il popolo a Babilonia.
13 In the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, however, King Cyrus issued an official order that this Templeof God should be rebuilt;	13 Ma l'anno primo di Ciro re di Babilonia, Ciro re fece un editto per la riedificazione di questa casa di Dio.
14 furthermore, those gold and silver articles belonging to the Temple of God, which Nebuchadnezzar hadremoved from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple of Babylon, King Cyrus in turn removed fromthe temple of Babylon and handed back to a certain Sheshbazzar whom he had appointed governor.	14 Perocché anche i vasi di oro, e di argento del tempio di Dio portati via da Nabuchodonosor dal tempio di Gerusalemme, e trasportati da lui nel tempio di Babilonia, Ciro re li trasse fuora dal tempio di Babilonia, e furono consegnati a uno detto Sassabasar, a cui pur diede egli la principale autorità.
15 He said to him, 'Take these articles; go and return them to the Temple which is in Jerusalem and letthe Temple of God be rebuilt on its original site;'	15 Egli disse: Prendi questi vasi, e va a riporli nel tempio, che è in Gerusalemme, e si riedifichi la casa di Dio nel suo sito.
16 this Sheshbazzar then came and laid the foundations of the Temple of God in Jerusalem, and it hasbeen under construction ever since, and is not yet finished."	16 Allora adunque Sassabasar venuto qua, gettò i fondamenti del tempio di Dio in Gerusalemme, e da quel tempo fino adesso si va edificando, e non è ancor finito.
17 'Hence, if it please the king, let search be made in the royal treasuries in Babylon, to find out if it is truethat an official order was issued by King Cyrus for this temple of God in Jerusalem to be rebuilt; and let the king'sdecision on this matter be sent to us.'	17 Ora adunque, se cosi pare al Re, faccia cercare negli archivj reali, che sono a Babilonia, se sia vero, che Ciro re comandò, che si riedificasse la casa di Dio in Gerusalemme, e ci faccia sapere riguardo a questo la intenzioni reali.
