NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Then Solomon said: Yahweh has chosen to dwel in thick cloud,1 Tunc Salomon ait: “ Dominus pollicitus est, ut habitaret in ca ligine;
and I have built you a princely dwel ing, a residence for you for ever.2 ego autem aedificavi domum in habitaculum tuum, ut habitares ibi in perpetuum ”.
Then the king turned round and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while the whole assembly ofIsrael stood.3 Et convertit rex faciem suam et benedixit universae multitudini Israel — nam omnis turba stabat intenta — et ait:
He said, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who has carried out by his hand what he promisedverbally to my father David, when he said,4 “ Benedictus Dominus, Deus Israel, qui, quod locutus est ore suo David patri meo, opere complevit dicens:
"From the day I brought my people out of Egypt I chose no city, in any of the tribes of Israel, to have atemple built where my name should be, nor did I choose anyone to be prince of my people Israel;5 “A die qua eduxi populum meum de terra Aegypti non elegi civitatem de cunctis tribubus Israel, ut aedificaretur in ea domus nomini meo, neque elegi quemquam alium virum, ut esset dux in populo meo Israel,
but I did choose Jerusalem for my name to be there, and I did choose David to rule my people Israel."6 sed elegi Ierusalem, ut sit nomen meum in ea, et elegi David, ut constituerem eum super populum meum Israel”.
My father David had set his heart on building a temple for the name of Yahweh, God of Israel,7 Cumque fuisset voluntatis David patris mei, ut aedificaret domum nomini Domini, Dei Israel,
but Yahweh said to my father David, "You have set your heart on building a temple for my name, and inthis you have done wel ;8 dixit Dominus ad eum: “Quia haec fuit voluntas tua, ut aedificares domum nomini meo, bene quidem fecisti huiuscemodi habere voluntatem,
and yet, you are not the man to build the temple; but your son, yet to be born to you, wil be the one tobuild the temple for my name."9 sed non tu aedificabis domum, verum filius tuus, qui egredietur de lumbis tuis, ipse aedificabit domum nomini meo”.
Yahweh has kept the promise which he made: I have succeeded my father David and am seated onthe throne of Israel, as Yahweh promised; I have built the temple for the name of Yahweh, God of Israel,10 Complevit ergo Dominus sermonem suum, quem locutus fuerat, et ego surrexi pro David patre meo et sedi super thronum Israel, sicut locutus est Dominus, et aedificavi domum nomini Domini, Dei Israel;
and I have placed in it the ark containing the covenant of Yahweh, which he made with the Israelites.'11 et posui in ea arcam, in qua est pactum Domini, quod pepigit cum filiis Israel ”.
Then in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, he stood facing the altar of Yahweh andstretched out his hands-12 Stetit ergo coram altari Domini ex adverso universae multitudinis Israel et extendit manus suas.
for Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, five cubits wide and five cubits high, whichhe had placed in the middle of the court and on which he was standing; he knelt down in front of the wholeassembly of Israel, stretched out his hands to heaven-13 Siquidem fecerat Salomon basim aeneam et posuerat eam in medio atrii habentem quinque cubitos longitudinis et quinque cubitos latitudinis et tres cubitos altitudinis, stetitque super eam; et deinceps, flexis genibus contra universam multitudinem Israel et palmis in caelum levatis,
and said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven or on earth, you who are loyal tothe covenant and show faithful love to your servants as long as they walk wholeheartedly in your way.14 ait: “ Domine, Deus Israel, non est similis tui Deus in caelo et in terra, qui custodis pactum et misericordiam cum servis tuis, qui ambulant coram te in toto corde suo,
You have kept it with your servant, my father David, as you promised him you would. What youpromised verbally today you have carried out by your hand.15 qui praestitisti servo tuo David patri meo quaecumque locutus fueras ei, et, quae ore promiseras, opere complesti, sicut et praesens tempus probat.
And now, Yahweh, God of Israel, keep the promise which you made to your servant David when yousaid, "You wil never lack for a man to sit in my presence before me on the throne of Israel, provided that yoursons are careful how they behave, fol owing my law as you yourself have done."16 Nunc ergo, Domine, Deus Israel, imple servo tuo patri meo David, quaecumque locutus es dicens: “Non deficiet ex te vir coram me, qui sedeat super thronum Israel, ita tamen si custodierint filii tui vias suas et ambulaverint in lege mea, sicut et tu ambulasti coram me”.
So now, God of Israel, let the words come true which you spoke to your servant, my father David.17 Et nunc, Domine, Deus Israel, firmetur sermo tuus, quem locutus es servo tuo David!
Yet wil God real y live with the people on earth? Why, the heavens and the heavens of the heavenscannot contain you! How much less this temple built by me!18 Ergone credibile est, ut habitet Deus cum hominibus super terram? Si caelum et caeli caelorum non te capiunt, quanto magis domus ista, quam aedificavi!
Even so, listen favourably to the prayer and entreaty of your servant, Yahweh my God; listen to the cryand to the prayer which your servant makes to you:19 Sed respice orationem servi tui et obsecrationem eius, Domine Deus meus, et audi clamorem et preces, quas fundit famulus tuus coram te,
Day and night, may your eyes watch over this temple, over this place in which you have promised toput your name. Listen to the prayer which your servant offers in this place.20 ut aperias oculos tuos super domum istam diebus ac noctibus, super locum in quo pollicitus es, ut ponas nomen tuum et exaudires orationem, quam servus tuus orat in eo.
'Listen to the entreaties of your servant and of your people Israel; whenever they pray in this place,listen from the place where you reside in heaven; and when you hear, forgive.21 Et exaudi preces famuli tui et populi tui Israel, qui oraverint ad locum istum; exaudi de habitaculo tuo, de caelis, exaudi et propitiare!
'If someone has wronged his neighbour and a curse is laid on him to make him swear here beforeyour altar in this Temple,22 Si peccaverit quispiam in proximum suum, et ille exegerit ab eo iuramentum, ut se maledicto constringat coram altari in domo ista,
then listen from heaven and do justice between your servants, paying back the guilty one by makinghim suffer for his conduct, and acquitting the upright by rewarding him as his uprightness deserves.23 tu audies de caelo et facies iudicium servorum tuorum, ita ut reddas iniquo viam suam in caput proprium et ulciscaris iustum retribuens ei secundum iustitiam suam.
'If your people Israel are defeated by the enemy because they have sinned against you, but thenreturn to you and acknowledge your name, and pray and seek your favour in this temple,24 Si superatus fuerit populus tuus Israel ab inimicis, quia peccaturi sunt tibi, et conversi egerint paenitentiam et confitentes nomini tuo oraverint et fuerint deprecati in domo ista,
then listen from heaven; forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the countrywhich you gave to them and their ancestors.25 tu exaudies de caelo, et propitiare peccato populi tui Israel et reduc eos in terram, quam dedisti eis et patribus eorum.
'When the heavens are shut and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray inthis place and praise your name and, having been humbled by you, desist from their sin,26 Si clauso caelo pluvia non fluxerit propter peccata populi, et deprecati te fuerint in loco isto et confessi nomini tuo et conversi a peccatis suis, cum eos afflixeris,
then listen from heaven and forgive the sin of your servant and of your people Israel -- for you areconstantly showing them the good way which they must fol ow -- and send rain on your country, which you havegiven to your people as their heritage.27 exaudi de caelo, Domine, et dimitte peccata servorum tuorum et populi tui Israel, doce eos viam bonam, per quam ingrediantur, et da pluviam terrae, quam dedisti populo tuo ad possidendum.
'Should there be famine in the country, or pestilence, wind-blast or mildew, locust or caterpil ar; shouldtheir enemy lay siege to their territory; should there be any plague or any disease;28 Fames si orta fuerit in terra et pestilentia, uredo et aurugo et locusta et bruchus et hostes, vastatis regionibus, portas eius obsederint, omnisque plaga et infirmitas presserit,
whatever be the prayer or entreaty of any individual, or of al your people Israel, each being aware ofhis own affliction and pain; when he stretches out his hands towards this Temple,29 si quis de populo tuo Israel fuerit deprecatus cognoscens plagam et infirmitatem suam et expanderit manus suas ad domum hanc,
then listen from heaven where you reside; forgive and, since you know what is in his heart, deal witheach as his conduct deserves -- for you alone know what is in the human heart-30 tu exaudi de caelo, de loco habitationis tuae, et propitiare et redde unicuique secundum vias suas, quia nosti cor eius; tu enim solus nosti corda filiorum hominum,
so that they may revere you by following your directions, which you gave to our ancestors, throughouttheir lives on earth.31 ut timeant te et ambulent in viis tuis cunctis diebus, quibus vivunt super faciem terrae, quam dedisti patribus nostris.
'Even the foreigner, not belonging to your people Israel but coming from a distant country, attracted byyour great name, your mighty hand and outstretched arm, if he comes and prays in this Temple,32 Externum quoque, qui non est de populo tuo Israel, si venerit de terra longinqua propter nomen tuum magnum et propter manum tuam robustam et brachium tuum extentum, et oraverit in loco isto,
then listen from heaven where you reside, and grant al that the foreigner asks of you, so that al thepeoples of the earth may acknowledge your name and, like your people Israel, revere you, and know that thisTemple, which I have built, bears your name.33 tu exaudies de caelo firmissimo habitaculo tuo et facies cuncta, pro quibus invocaverit te ille peregrinus, ut sciant omnes populi terrae nomen tuum et timeant te sicut populus tuus Israel et cognoscant quia nomen tuum invocatum est super domum hanc, quam aedificavi.
'If your people go out to war against their enemies, on whatever mission you send them, and they prayto you, turning towards this city which you have chosen and towards the Temple which I have built for yourname,34 Si egressus fuerit populus tuus ad bellum contra adversarios suos per viam, in qua miseris eos, et oraverint te contra viam, in qua civitas haec est, quam elegisti, et domus, quam aedificavi nomini tuo,
then listen from heaven to their prayer and their entreaty, and uphold their cause.35 tu exaudies de caelo preces eorum et obsecrationem, et facies iudicium eorum.
'When they sin against you -- for there is no one who does not sin -- and you are angry with them andabandon them to the enemy, and their captors carry them off to a country be it far away or near,36 Si autem peccaverint tibi — neque enim est homo, qui non peccet — et iratus fueris eis et tradideris hostibus, et captivos duxerint eos in terram longinquam vel propinquam,
if they come to their senses in the country to which they have been taken as captives and pray to youonce again in the country of their captivity, saying, "We have sinned, we have acted wrongly and wickedly,"37 et conversi in corde suo in terra, ad quam captivi ducti fuerant, egerint paenitentiam et deprecati te fuerint in terra captivitatis suae dicentes: “Peccavimus, inique fecimus, iniuste egimus”;
and turn back to you with al their heart and soul in the country of their captivity to which they havebeen carried away as captives, and pray, turning towards the country which you gave to their ancestors, towardsthe city you have chosen, and towards the Temple which I have built for your name,38 et reversi fuerint ad te in toto corde suo et in tota anima sua in terra captivitatis suae, ad quam ducti sunt, et oraverint te contra viam terrae suae, quam dedisti patribus eorum, et urbis, quam elegisti, et domus, quam aedificavi nomini tuo,
then listen from heaven where you reside, hear their prayer and entreaties, uphold their cause andforgive your people for having sinned against you.39 ut exaudias de caelo, de loco habitationis tuae, preces eorum et supplicationes eorum et facias iudicium et dimittas populo tuo, qui peccavit tibi;
'Now, O my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive to prayer offered in this place.40 tu es enim Deus meus. Aperiantur, quaeso, oculi tui, et aures tuae intentae sint ad orationem, quae fit in loco isto.
And now Yahweh God, go up to your resting-place, you and your fortress, the Ark! Let your priests,Yahweh God, be robed in salvation, let your faithful rejoice in what is good!41 Nunc igitur consurge, Domine Deus, in requiem tuam, tu et arca fortitudinis tuae; sacerdotes tui, Domine Deus, induantur salutem, et sancti tui laetentur in bonis.
Yahweh God, do not rebuff your Anointed -- remember the faithful love of your servant David!'42 Domine Deus, ne averteris faciem christi tui; memento misericordiarum David servi tui ”.
