1 Josiah was eight years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for thirty-one years inJerusalem.	1 Josias avait 8 ans quand il monta sur le trône, il régna 31 ans à Jérusalem.
2 He did what is pleasing to Yahweh, and fol owed the example of his ancestor David, not deviatingfrom it to right or to left.	2 Il fit ce qui est juste au regard de Yahvé et suivit les traces de David son ancêtre: il ne s’en écarta ni à droite, ni à gauche.
3 In the eighth year of his reign, when he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his ancestorDavid. In the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the sacred poles and thesculpted and cast images.	3 La huitième année de son règne, quand il était encore jeune, il commença à rechercher le Dieu de David, son ancêtre, et la douzième année il commença à purifier Juda et Jérusalem des Hauts-Lieux, des pieux sacrés et des idoles de bois ou de bronze.
4 He superintended the smashing of the altars of Baal, he broke up the incense altars standing abovethem, he shattered the sacred poles and the sculpted and cast images and reduced them to powder, scatteringthe powder on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.	4 On détruisit en sa présence les autels des Baals et les autels à parfum placés dessus. Il brisa les pieux sacrés et les statues de bois et de bronze, et les réduisit en poussière qu’il jeta sur les tombes de ceux qui leur avaient offert des sacrifices.
5 He burned the bones of their priests on their altars and so purified Judah and Jerusalem.	5 Il brûla les ossements des prêtres sur leurs autels et purifia ainsi Juda et Jérusalem.
6 In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and round their open spaces,	6 Dans les villes de Manassé, d’Éphraïm, de Siméon, et jusqu’en Nephtali, même dans les villes en ruines,
7 he smashed the altars and sacred poles, reduced the sculpted images to powder and broke up al theincense altars throughout the territory of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.	7 il abattit les autels, les pieux sacrés et les statues de bois; il les fit marteler et réduire en poussière. Il renversa tous les autels à parfum dans tout les pays, après quoi il rentra à Jérusalem.
8 In the eighteenth year of his reign, after purging the country and the Temple, he commissionedShaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah governor of the city and the herald Joah son of Joahaz, to repair the Templeof Yahweh his God.	8 En la dix-huitième année de son règne, il envoya Chafan, fils d’Asalyas, Maaséyas gouverneur de la ville, et Yoah fils de Yoahaz le porte-parole, pour purifier le pays et la Maison et pour réparer la Maison de Yahvé son Dieu.
9 When they came to the high priest Hilkiah, they handed over the money contributed to the Temple ofGod and col ected by the levitical guardians of the threshold from Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the rest of Israel, from al Judah and Benjamin, and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem.	9 Ils allèrent trouver Hilkiyas le grand prêtre et lui donnèrent l’argent qu’on avait apporté à la Maison de Dieu: les lévites, gardiens de la Porte, l’avaient reçu de Manassé, d’Éphraïm, des autres tribus d’Israël, de tout Juda, de Benjamin, et des habitants de Jérusalem.
10 They handed it over to the masters of works attached to the Temple of Yahweh, and these gave it tothe men working on the Temple of Yahweh to repair and restore the Temple;	10 On le confia à ceux qui s’occupaient des travaux et qui étaient chargés de la Maison de Yahvé, ils le donnèrent aux ouvriers qui faisaient le travail nécessaire pour reconstruire ou réparer la Maison de Yahvé.
11 they gave it to the craftsmen and builders for buying dressed stone and timber for beams, tounderpin the buildings which the kings of Judah had al owed to fall into decay.	11 On le donna aux charpentiers et aux maçons, on acheta des pierres de taille et des bois pour le chaînage et la charpente des bâtiments qu’avaient détruits les rois de Juda.
12 The men were conscientious in doing their work; their foremen were Jahath and Obadiah, Levitesdescended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshul am, descended from Kohath, who supervised. The Levites --al of whom were skilled instrumentalists-	12 Ces hommes travaillaient là en permanence et voici ceux qui avaient autorité sur eux: Yahat et Obadyas, lévites du clan de Mérari, Zékaryas et Méchoullam, contremaîtres du clan de Kahat, les lévites experts en instruments de musique,
13 were in charge of the carriers and supervised al the workmen at their various jobs, while some of theLevites acted as secretaries, book-keepers and gatekeepers.	13 les responsables des porteurs, les chefs des différents corps de métier, et enfin quelques lévites secrétaires, greffiers et portiers.
14 While bringing out the money contributed to the Temple of Yahweh, the priest Hilkiah found the bookof the Law of Yahweh given through Moses.	14 Donc, lorsqu’on vint prendre l’argent qui avait été offert à la Maison de Yahvé, il se trouva que le prêtre Hilkiyas avait trouvé le livre de la Loi de Yahvé donnée par Moïse.
15 Hilkiah then said to Shaphan the secretary, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the Temple ofYahweh.' And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.	15 Hilkiyas prit la parole et dit au secrétaire Chafan: “J’ai trouvé le livre de la Loi dans la Maison de Yahvé.” Et Hilkiyas remit le livre à Chafan.
16 Shaphan took the book to the king, reporting furthermore to him as fol ows, 'Your servants have doneeverything entrusted to them.	16 Chafan porta le livre au roi et lui fit ce rapport: “Tes serviteurs font bien le travail qu’on leur a confié.
17 They have melted down the silver which was in the Temple of Yahweh and have handed it over tothe supervisors and the masters of works.'	17 Ils ont versé l’argent qui se trouvait dans la Maison de Yahvé et ils l’ont remis aux responsables et aux ouvriers.”
18 Shaphan the secretary also informed the king, 'The priest Hilkiah has given me a book'; andShaphan read extracts from it in the king's presence.	18 Puis, s’adressant au roi, le secrétaire Chafan ajouta: “Le prêtre Hilkiyas m’a remis ce livre.” Et Chafan le lut devant le roi.
19 On hearing the words of the Law, the king tore his clothes.	19 En entendant les paroles de la Loi, le roi déchira ses habits,
20 Then the king gave the fol owing order to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah,Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king's minister,	20 puis il donna cet ordre à Hilkiyas, à Ahikam fils de Chafan, à Abdon fils de Mika, au secrétaire Chafan et au ministre du roi, Asaya:
21 'Go and consult Yahweh on behalf of me and of those left in Israel and Judah about the words of thebook that has been discovered: for Yahweh's furious wrath has been pouring down on us because our ancestorsdid not obey the word of Yahweh by doing what this book says they ought to have done.'	21 “Allez consulter Yahvé pour moi, pour ce qui reste d’Israël et de Juda, à propos des paroles du livre que l’on a trouvé. Grande doit être la colère de Yahvé contre nous, car nos pères n’ont pas obéi à la parole de Yahvé et n’ont rien fait de ce qui est écrit dans ce livre.”
22 Hilkiah and those whom the king had designated went to the prophetess Huldah wife of Shallum, sonof Tokhath, son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe; she lived in Jerusalem in the new town. They spoke toher about this,	22 Alors Hilkiyas et les hommes du roi allèrent trouver la prophétesse Houlda femme de Challoum, fils de Tokat, fils de Hasra, le gardien des vêtements; elle habitait à Jérusalem dans le nouveau quartier. Ils lui exposèrent les faits,
23 and she replied, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "To the man who sent you to me reply:	23 et elle leur répondit: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël: vous direz à l’homme qui vous a envoyés chez moi:
24 Yahweh says this: I am going to bring disaster on this place and the people who live in it -- all thecurses set down in the book read in the king of Judah's presence.	24 Ainsi parle Yahvé: Sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants je fais venir un malheur, toutes les malédictions écrites dans le livre qu’on a lu devant le roi de Juda.
25 Because they have abandoned me and burnt incense to other gods, so as to provoke my anger bytheir every action, my wrath is about to be poured down on this place, and nothing can stop it.	25 Car ils m’ont abandonné, ils ont offert de l’encens à d’autres dieux et ils ont provoqué ma colère par tout ce qu’ils ont fait; ma colère s’est répandue sur ce lieu et elle ne s’éteindra pas.
26 As for the king of Judah who sent you to consult Yahweh, say this to him: Yahweh, God of Israel,says this: The words you have heard . . .	26 Vous direz encore au roi de Juda qui vous envoie consulter Yahvé: Voici ce que dit Yahvé Dieu d’Israël: Tu as prêté l’oreille à ces paroles,
27 But since your heart has been touched and you have humbled yourself before God on hearing whathe has decreed against this place and the people who live in it, have torn your clothes and wept before me, I toohave heard"-Yahweh says this.	27 moi aussi je t’ai entendu - parole de Yahvé. Tu as été bouleversé, tu t’es humilié devant Dieu en entendant les paroles de ce livre contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants. Tu t’es humilié devant moi, tu as déchiré tes habits et tu as pleuré devant moi.
28 "Look, when I gather you to your ancestors, you wil be gathered into your grave in peace; you wilnot live to see the great disaster that I am going to bring on this place and on the people who live in it." ' Theytook this answer to the king.	28 Voilà pourquoi je te réunirai à tes pères et tu reposeras en paix dans ta tombe. Tes yeux ne verront pas le malheur que je fais venir sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants.” Ils rapportèrent au roi cette réponse.
29 The king then had al the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem summoned,	29 Le roi envoya chercher tous les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem.
30 and the king went up to the temple of Yahweh, with al the men of Judah and al the inhabitants ofJerusalem, priests, Levites and al the people, high and low. In their hearing he read out the entire contents ofthe Book of the Covenant discovered in the Temple of Yahweh.	30 Avec tous les hommes de Juda et tous les habitants de Jérusalem, avec les prêtres et les lévites, avec tout le peuple du plus grand au plus petit, le roi monta à la Maison de Yahvé. Devant eux il fit la lecture de toutes les paroles du livre de l’alliance qu’on avait trouvé dans la Maison de Yahvé.
31 The king then, standing on the dais, bound himself by the covenant before Yahweh, to followYahweh, to keep his commandments, decrees and laws with al his heart and soul and to carry out the terms ofthe covenant as written in this book.	31 Debout sur son estrade, le roi conclut l’alliance en présence de Yahvé: on s’engageait à marcher à la suite de Yahvé, à observer ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses préceptes, de tout son cœur et de toute son âme, à mettre en pratique les paroles de l’alliance écrites dans ce livre.
32 He made al those present in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge their al egiance to it. The citizens ofJerusalem took action in keeping with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors,	32 Il demanda instamment à tous ceux qui étaient à Jérusalem et en Benjamin de s’engager dans l’alliance de Dieu, le Dieu de leurs pères.
33 while Josiah removed al the abominations throughout the territories belonging to the Israelites andrequired all inhabitants of Israel to serve Yahweh their God; throughout his lifetime they did not deviate fromfol owing Yahweh, God of their ancestors.	33 Josias enleva toutes les Ordures, de quelque pays que ce soit, qui étaient aux mains des Israélites, il obligea tous ceux qui étaient en Israël à servir Yahvé leur Dieu, et tant qu’il vécut, ils ne s’écartèrent plus de Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères.
