NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Hezekiah sent messengers to al Israel and Judah, and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, bidding them come to the Temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover in honour of Yahweh, Godof Israel.1 Misit quoque Ezechias ad omnem Israel et Iudam scri psitque et epistulas ad Ephraim et Manassen, ut venirent ad domum Domini in Ierusalem et facerent Pascha Domino, Deo Israel.
For the king and his officials and the whole congregation in Jerusalem had agreed to celebrate thePassover in the second month,2 Inito quoque consilio regis et principum et universi coetus in Ierusalem, decreverunt, ut facerent Pascha mense secundo.
having been unable to celebrate it at the proper time, since the priests had not purified themselves insufficient number, and the people were not assembled in Jerusalem.3 Non enim potuerant facere in tempore suo, quia sacerdotes, qui possent sufficere, sanctificati non fuerant, et populus necdum congregatus erat in Ierusalem.
And since this arrangement seemed fitting to the king and the whole congregation,4 Placuit ergo sermo regi et omni multitudini,
they resolved to send a proclamation throughout Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, cal ing on the peopleto come to Jerusalem and celebrate a Passover in honour of Yahweh, God of Israel, since they had notcelebrated it in a body as prescribed.5 et decreverunt, ut mitterent nuntios in universum Israel de Bersabee usque Dan, ut venirent et facerent Pascha Domino, Deo Israel, in Ierusalem; in plurima enim multitudine non fecerant, sicut lege praescriptum est.
So, by order of the king, courtiers set out with letters from the king and his officials for every part ofIsrael and Judah, saying, 'Israelites, return to Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and he wil return tothose of you who are left and have escaped the grasp of the kings of Assyria.6 Perrexeruntque cursores cum epistulis ex regis manu et principum eius in universum Israel et Iudam, iuxta quod rex iusserat, praedicantes: “ Filii Israel, revertimini ad Dominum, Deum Abraham et Isaac et Israel, ut revertatur ad reliquias, quae effugerunt manum regum Assyriorum.
Do not be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to Yahweh, God of their ancestors; hebrought them to ruin, as you can see.7 Nolite fieri sicut patres vestri et fratres, qui recesserunt a Domino, Deo patrum suorum, et tradidit eos in interitum, ut ipsi cernitis.
Do not be stubborn like your ancestors. Submit to Yahweh, come to his sanctuary which he hasconsecrated for ever, and serve Yahweh your God, so that his fierce anger may turn away from you.8 Nolite nunc indurare cervices vestras sicut patres vestri. Tradite manus Domino et venite ad sanctuarium eius, quod sanctificavit in aeternum; servite Domino Deo vestro, ut avertatur a vobis ira furoris eius.
For if you return to Yahweh, your brothers and your sons wil be treated mercifully by their captors andbe al owed to return to this country; for Yahweh your God is gracious and merciful and wil not turn his face awayfrom you, if you return to him.'9 Si enim vos reversi fueritis ad Dominum, fratres vestri et filii habebunt misericordiam coram dominis suis, qui illos duxere captivos, et revertentur in terram hanc: misericors enim et clemens est Dominus Deus vester et non avertet faciem suam a vobis, si reversi fueritis ad eum ”.
The courtiers went from town to town through the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh and as far asZebulon but the people laughed and scoffed at them;10 Igitur cursores pergebant de civitate in civitatem per terram Ephraim et Manasse usque Zabulon, illis irridentibus et subsannantibus eos.
even so, some people from Asher and Manasseh and Zebulon were humble enough to come toJerusalem,11 Attamen quidam viri ex Aser et Manasse et Zabulon se humiliaverunt et venerunt Ierusalem.
while in Judah the hand of God was also at work inspiring a unanimous desire to obey the order ofthe king and the officials in accordance with the word of Yahweh.12 In Iuda quoque facta est manus Domini, ut daret eis cor unum, ut facerent praeceptum regis et principum iuxta verbum Domini.
A huge crowd assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Unleavened Bread in the secondmonth. An immense crowd13 Congregatus est ergo in Ierusalem populus multus, ut faceret sollemnitatem Azymorum in mense secundo, ecclesia magna valde.
set to work removing the altars then in Jerusalem; they also removed al the incense altars and threwthem into the Kidron Val ey.14 Et surgentes destruxerunt altaria, quae erant in Ierusalem, atque universa thymiamateria subvertentes proiecerunt in torrentem Cedron.
They then slaughtered the Passover victims on the fourteenth day of the second month. Ashamed ofthemselves, the priests and Levites had in the meanwhile sanctified themselves and brought burnt offerings tothe Temple of Yahweh,15 Et mactaverunt Pascha quarta decima die mensis secundi; sacerdotes autem atque Levitae confusi sanctificati sunt et attulerunt holocausta in domum Domini.
so they now stood in their positions prescribed in the Law of Moses man of God, the priestssprinkling the blood handed to them by the Levites.16 Steteruntque in ordine suo iuxta dispositionem et legem Moysi hominis Dei, sacerdotes vero suscipiebant effundendum sanguinem de manibus Levitarum,
Since many people in the congregation had not sanctified themselves, the Levites took care of theslaughter of the Passover victims to consecrate them to Yahweh for al who were not clean.17 eo quod multi in coetu sanctificati non essent; idcirco Levitae mactaverunt victimas Paschae omnibus, qui non erant mundi, ut sanctificarent illas Domino.
For a great many people, especial y from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulon, had notpurified themselves, since they did not eat the Passover as prescribed.
everyone whose heart is set on seeking God, Yahweh, God of his ancestors, even if he has not beenpurified as holy things demand.'19 cunctis, qui direxerunt cor suum, ut requirerent Dominum, Deum patrum suorum, quamvis non secundum munditiam sanctuarii ”.
Yahweh listened to Hezekiah and left the people unharmed.20 Quem exaudivit Dominus, et placatus est populo.
Amid great rejoicing, the Israelites present in Jerusalem celebrated the feast of Unleavened Breadfor seven days, while day after day the Levites and the priests praised Yahweh with al their might.21 Feceruntque filii Israel, qui inventi sunt in Ierusalem, sollemnitatem Azymorum septem diebus in laetitia magna, laudaverunt Dominum et per singulos dies Levitae et sacerdotes per organa benesonantia.
Hezekiah then encouraged al the Levites who had such understanding of Yahweh. Having finishedthe seven-day festival, during which they sacrificed communion sacrifices and praised Yahweh, God of theirancestors,22 Et locutus est Ezechias ad cor omnium Levitarum, qui habebant intellegentiam bonam super Domino; et compleverunt sollemnitatem septem dierum immolantes victimas pacificorum et laudantes Dominum, Deum patrum suorum.
the whole congregation decided to celebrate for a further seven days. So they joyful y celebrated foranother seven days,23 Placuitque universae multitudini, ut celebrarent etiam alios dies septem, quod et fecerunt cum ingenti gaudio.
Hezekiah king of Judah contributing a thousand bul s and seven thousand sheep for thecongregation, and the officials another thousand bul s and ten thousand sheep. And a large number of priestssanctified themselves.24 Ezechias enim rex Iudae praebuerat multitudini mille tauros et septem milia ovium; principes vero dederant populo tauros mille et oves decem milia; sanctificata est ergo sacerdotum plurima multitudo.
The whole congregation of Judah, the priests, the Levites, the whole congregation coming fromIsrael and the foreigners coming from the territory of Israel as wel as those resident in Judah, rejoiced.25 Et hilaritate perfusa est omnis turba Iudae, tam sacerdotum et Levitarum quam universae frequentiae, quae venerat ex Israel, advenae quoque, qui venerant de terra Israel vel habitabant in Iuda.
There was great rejoicing in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David, king of Israel, nothing comparable had ever occurred in Jerusalem.26 Factaque est grandis laetitia in Ierusalem, qualis a diebus Salomonis filii David regis Israel in ea urbe non fuerat.
The levitical priests then stood up and blessed the people and their voice was heard, and their prayerreached his holy dwelling in heaven.27 Surrexerunt autem sacerdotes levitici generis benedicentes populo; et exaudita est vox eorum, pervenitque oratio eorum in habitaculum sanctum eius in caelum.
