NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Ahaz was twenty years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for sixteen years inJerusalem. He did not do what Yahweh regards as right, as his ancestor David had done.1 Viginti annorum erat Achaz cum regnare cœpisset, et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem. Non fecit rectum in conspectu Domini sicut David pater ejus,
He followed the example of the kings of Israel, even having images cast for the Baals;2 sed ambulavit in viis regum Israël, insuper et statuas fudit Baalim.
he burned incense in the Val ey of Ben-Hinnom, caused his sons to pass through the fire of sacrifice, copying the disgusting practices of the nations whom Yahweh had dispossessed for the Israelites.3 Ipse est qui adolevit incensum in valle Benennom, et lustravit filios suos in igne juxta ritum gentium quas interfecit Dominus in adventu filiorum Israël.
He offered sacrifices and incense on the high places, on the hil s and under every green tree.4 Sacrificabat quoque, et thymiama succendebat in excelsis, et in collibus, et sub omni ligno frondoso.
So Yahweh his God put him at the mercy of the king of Aram, who defeated him and took largenumbers of captives, carrying them off to Damascus. He also put him at the mercy of the king of Israel, whoinflicted heavy casualties on him.5 Tradiditque eum Dominus Deus ejus in manu regis Syriæ, qui percussit eum, magnamque prædam cepit de ejus imperio, et adduxit in Damascum : manibus quoque regis Israël traditus est, et percussus plaga grandi.
In a single day, Pekah son of Remaliah kil ed a hundred and twenty thousand in Judah, al of themprominent men, because they had abandoned Yahweh, God of their ancestors.6 Occiditque Phacee filius Romeliæ, de Juda centum viginti millia in die uno, omnes viros bellatores : eo quod reliquissent Dominum Deum patrum suorum.
Zichri, an Ephraimite champion, killed Maaseiah the king's son, Azrikam the control er of thehousehold and Elkanah the king's second-in-command.7 Eodem tempore occidit Zechri, vir potens ex Ephraim, Maasiam filium regis, et Ezricam ducem domus ejus, Elcanam quoque secundum a rege.
Of their brothers, the Israelites took two hundred thousand captive including wives, sons, daughters;they also took quantities of booty, carrying everything off to Samaria.8 Ceperuntque filii Israël de fratribus suis ducenta millia mulierum, puerorum, et puellarum, et infinitam prædam : pertuleruntque eam in Samariam.
Now there was a prophet of Yahweh there by the name of Oded, who went out to meet the troopsreturning to Samaria and said, 'Look, because Yahweh, God of your ancestors, was angry with Judah, he putthem at your mercy, but you have slaughtered them with such fury as reached to heaven,9 Ea tempestate erat ibi propheta Domini, nomine Oded : qui egressus obviam exercitui venienti in Samariam, dixit eis : Ecce iratus Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum contra Juda, tradidit eos in manibus vestris, et occidistis eos atrociter, ita ut ad cælum pertingeret vestra crudelitas.
and now you propose to reduce the children of Judah and Jerusalem to being your male and femaleslaves! Have you not yourselves committed sins against Yahweh your God?10 Insuper filios Juda et Jerusalem vultis vobis subjicere in servos et ancillas : quod nequaquam facto opus est : peccastis enim super hoc Domino Deo vestro.
Now listen to me: release the captives you have taken from your brothers, for the fierce anger ofYahweh hangs over you.'11 Sed audite consilium meum, et reducite captivos quos adduxistis de fratribus vestris, quia magnus furor Domini imminet vobis.
Some of the Ephraimite chieftains -- Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechaiah son of Meshil emoth,Jehizkiah son of Shal um and Amasa son of Hadlai -- then protested to those returning from the war12 Steterunt itaque viri de principibus filiorum Ephraim, Azarias filius Johanan, Barachias filius Mosollamoth, Ezechias filius Sellum, et Amasa filius Adali, contra eos qui veniebant de prælio,
and said to them, 'You must not bring the captives here, for we have already sinned against Yahwehand you propose to add to our sin and guilt, although our guilt is already great, and fierce anger is hanging overIsrael.'13 et dixerunt eis : Non introducetis huc captivos, ne peccemus Domino. Quare vultis adjicere super peccata nostra, et vetera cumulare delicta ? grande quippe peccatum est, et ira furoris Domini imminet super Israël.
So in the presence of the officials and whole assembly, the soldiers gave up the captives and thebooty.14 Dimiseruntque viri bellatores prædam, et universa quæ ceperant, coram principibus, et omni multitudine.
Men nominated for the purpose then took charge of the captives. From the booty they clothed althose of them who were naked; they gave them clothing and sandals, provided them with food and drink, mounted on donkeys al those who were infirm and took them back to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to theirbrothers. Then they returned to Samaria.15 Steteruntque viri quos supra memoravimus, et apprehendentes captivos, omnesque qui nudi erant, vestierunt de spoliis : cumque vestissent eos, et calceassent, et refecissent cibo ac potu, unxissentque propter laborem, et adhibuissent eis curam : quicumque ambulare non poterant, et erant imbecillo corpore, imposuerunt eos jumentis, et adduxerunt Jericho civitatem palmarum ad fratres eorum, ipsique reversi sunt in Samariam.
This was when King Ahaz sent asking the king of Assyria to come to his assistance.16 Tempore illo misit rex Achaz ad regem Assyriorum, postulans auxilium.
The Edomites again invaded, defeated Judah, and carried off captives,17 Veneruntque Idumæi, et percusserunt multos ex Juda, et ceperunt prædam magnam.
while the Philistines raided the towns in the lowlands and in the Negeb of Judah, capturing Beth-Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco and its dependencies, Timnah and its dependencies and Gimzo and itsdependencies, and settled there.18 Philisthiim quoque diffusi sunt per urbes campestres, et ad meridiem Juda : ceperuntque Bethsames, et Ajalon, et Gaderoth, Socho quoque, et Thamnan, et Gamzo, cum viculis suis, et habitaverunt in eis.
For Yahweh brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, since he behaved without restraint inJudah and had been unfaithful to Yahweh.19 Humiliaverat enim Dominus Judam propter Achaz regem Juda, eo quod nudasset eum auxilio, et contemptui habuisset Dominum.
Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria attacked and besieged him; but he could not overpower him.20 Adduxitque contra eum Thelgathphalnasar regem Assyriorum, qui et afflixit eum, et nullo resistente vastavit.
Although Ahaz robbed the Temple of Yahweh and the palaces of the king and princes and gave theproceeds to the king of Assyria, he received no help from him.21 Igitur Achaz, spoliata domo Domini, et domo regum ac principum, dedit regi Assyriorum munera, et tamen nihil ei profuit.
During the time when he was under siege he disobeyed Yahweh even more grossly, this King Ahaz.22 Insuper et tempore angustiæ suæ auxit contemptum in Dominum, ipse per se rex Achaz,
For he offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus who had defeated him. 'Since the gods of thekings of Aram', he thought, 'have supported them, I shal sacrifice to them, and perhaps they will help me.' Butthey proved to be his and al Israel's downfal .23 immolavit diis Damasci victimas percussoribus suis, et dixit : Dii regum Syriæ auxiliantur eis, quos ego placabo hostiis, et aderunt mihi : cum e contrario ipsi fuerint ruinæ ei, et universo Israël.
Ahaz then collected the equipment of the Temple of God, broke up the equipment of the Temple ofGod, sealed the doors of the Temple of Yahweh and put his own altars in every corner of Jerusalem;24 Direptis itaque Achaz omnibus vasis domus Dei, atque confractis, clausit januas templi Dei, et fecit sibi altaria in universis angulis Jerusalem.
he set up high places in every town of Judah to burn incense to other gods, thus provoking the angerof Yahweh, God of his ancestors.25 In omnibus quoque urbibus Juda exstruxit aras ad cremandum thus, atque ad iracundiam provocavit Dominum Deum patrum suorum.
The rest of his history, his whole policy, from first to last, is recorded in the Book of the Kings ofJudah and Israel.26 Reliqua autem sermonum ejus, et omnium operum suorum priorum et novissimorum, scripta sunt in libro regum Juda et Israël.
Then Ahaz fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in the City, in Jerusalem, though he was nottaken to the tombs of the kings of Israel. His son Hezekiah succeeded him.27 Dormivitque Achaz cum patribus suis, et sepelierunt eum in civitate Jerusalem : neque enim receperunt eum in sepulchra regum Israël. Regnavitque Ezechias filius ejus pro eo.
