NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Then Jehoshaphat fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David; his sonJehoram succeeded him.1 Dormivit autem Josaphat cum patribus suis, et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David : regnavitque Joram filius ejus pro eo.
Jehoram's brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael andShephatiah -- al of them sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.2 Qui habuit fratres filios Josaphat, Azariam, et Jahiel, et Zachariam, et Azariam, et Michaël, et Saphatiam : omnes hi filii Josaphat regis Juda.
Their father had lavishly given them presents of silver, gold and other valuables as wel as fortifiedtowns in Judah; but the throne he bequeathed to Jehoram since he was the first-born.3 Deditque eis pater suus multa munera argenti et auri, et pensitationes, cum civitatibus munitissimis in Juda : regnum autem tradidit Joram, eo quod esset primogenitus.
Jehoram, having taken control of his father's kingdom and secured his own position, put al hisbrothers to the sword and some officials of Israel too.4 Surrexit ergo Joram super regnum patris sui : cumque se confirmasset, occidit omnes fratres suos gladio, et quosdam de principibus Israël.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eight years inJerusalem.5 Triginta duorum annorum erat Joram cum regnare cœpisset, et octo annis regnavit in Jerusalem.
He followed the example of the kings of Israel as the House of Ahab were doing, he having marriedone of Ahab's daughters; and he did what is displeasing to Yahweh.6 Ambulavitque in viis regum Israël, sicut egerat domus Achab : filia quippe Achab erat uxor ejus : et fecit malum in conspectu Domini.
But Yahweh would not destroy the House of David, because of the covenant which he had made withDavid, promising to provide him and his sons with a lamp for ever.7 Noluit autem Dominus disperdere domum David propter pactum quod inierat cum eo : et quia promiserat ut daret ei lucernam, et filiis ejus omni tempore.
In his time Edom threw off the domination of Judah and set up a king for itself.8 In diebus illis rebellavit Edom, ne esset subditus Judæ, et constituit sibi regem.
Jehoram crossed the frontier, and with him his commanders and al his chariots. Under cover of dark,he and his chariot commanders broke through the Edomites surrounding him.9 Cumque transisset Joram cum principibus suis, et cuncto equitatu qui erat secum, surrexit nocte, et percussit Edom, qui se circumdederat, et omnes duces equitatus ejus.
Thus Edom threw off the domination of Judah and has remained free to the present day. Libnahrevolted against him at the same time, because he had abandoned Yahweh, God of his ancestors.10 Attamen rebellavit Edom, ne esset sub ditione Juda usque ad hanc diem : eo tempore et Lobna recessit ne esset sub manu illius. Dereliquerat enim Dominum Deum patrum suorum :
What is more, he set up high places in the highlands of Judah, leading the citizens of Jerusalem andthe people of Judah into apostasy.11 insuper et excelsa fabricatus est in urbibus Juda, et fornicari fecit habitatores Jerusalem, et prævaricari Judam.
Something written by the prophet Elijah then came into his hands. It said, 'Yahweh, God of yourancestor David, says this, "Since you have not fol owed the example of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa kingof Judah,12 Allatæ sunt autem ei litteræ ab Elia propheta, in quibus scriptum erat : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus David patris tui : Quoniam non ambulasti in viis Josaphat patris tui, et in viis Asa regis Juda,
but have fol owed the example of the kings of Israel and have led Judah and the citizens ofJerusalem into apostasy, just as the House of Ahab has led Israel into apostasy, and have even murdered yourbrothers, your own family, who were better men than you,13 sed incessisti per iter regum Israël, et fornicari fecisti Judam et habitatores Jerusalem, imitatus fornicationem domus Achab, insuper et fratres tuos, domum patris tui, meliores te, occidisti :
Yahweh is going to afflict your people, your sons, your wives and al your property with a greatcalamity,14 ecce Dominus percutiet te plaga magna cum populo tuo, et filiis, et uxoribus tuis, universaque substantia tua.
and you yourself with a severe disease affecting your bowels, as a result of which disease, continuing day after day, you wil suffer protrusion of your bowels." '15 Tu autem ægrotabis pessimo languore uteri tui, donec egrediantur vitalia tua paulatim per singulos dies.
Yahweh then roused the hostility of the Philistines and of the Arabs living near the Cushites againstJehoram.16 Suscitavit ergo Dominus contra Joram spiritum Philisthinorum, et Arabum qui confines sunt Æthiopibus :
They invaded Judah, forcing their way into it and carrying off all the property to be found in the king'spalace, as wel as his sons and his wives, so that he was left no sons at al except his youngest son Jehoahaz.17 et ascenderunt in terram Juda, et vastaverunt eam, diripueruntque cunctam substantiam quæ inventa est in domo regis, insuper et filios ejus, et uxores : nec remansit ei filius, nisi Joachaz, qui minimus natu erat.
And after al this, Yahweh afflicted him with an incurable disease of the bowels;18 Et super hæc omnia percussit eum Dominus alvi languore insanabili.
in due time, after about two years, his bowels protruded as a result of his disease and he died inacute pain. His people did not make a funeral pyre for him, as they had for his ancestors.19 Cumque diei succederet dies, et temporum spatia volverentur, duorum annorum expletus est circulus : et sic longa consumptus tabe, ita ut egereret etiam viscera sua, languore pariter, et vita caruit. Mortuusque est in infirmitate pessima, et non fecit ei populus secundum morem combustionis exequias, sicut fecerat majoribus ejus.
He was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. He passed away unlamented and was buried in the City of David, though not in the tombs of the kings.20 Triginta duorum annorum fuit cum regnare cœpisset, et octo annis regnavit in Jerusalem. Ambulavitque non recte, et sepelierunt eum in civitate David, verumtamen non in sepulchro regum.
