NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Then Jehoshaphat fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David; his sonJehoram succeeded him.1 Dormivit autem Iosaphat cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David; regnavitque Ioram filius eius pro eo.
Jehoram's brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael andShephatiah -- al of them sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.2 Qui habuit fratres filios Iosaphat Azariam et Iahiel et Zachariam et Azariam et Michael et Saphatiam: omnes hi filii Iosaphat regis Israel.
Their father had lavishly given them presents of silver, gold and other valuables as wel as fortifiedtowns in Judah; but the throne he bequeathed to Jehoram since he was the first-born.3 Deditque eis pater suus multa munera argenti et auri et res pretiosas cum civitatibus munitissimis in Iuda; regnum autem tradidit Ioram, eo quod esset primogenitus.
Jehoram, having taken control of his father's kingdom and secured his own position, put al hisbrothers to the sword and some officials of Israel too.4 Surrexit ergo Ioram super regnum patris sui; cumque se confirmasset, occidit omnes fratres suos gladio et quosdam de principibus Israel.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eight years inJerusalem.5 Triginta duorum annorum erat Ioram, cum regnare coepisset, et octo annis regnavit in Ierusalem.
He followed the example of the kings of Israel as the House of Ahab were doing, he having marriedone of Ahab's daughters; and he did what is displeasing to Yahweh.6 Ambulavitque in viis regum Israel, sicut egerat domus Achab; filia quippe Achab erat uxor eius. Et fecit malum in conspectu Domini.
But Yahweh would not destroy the House of David, because of the covenant which he had made withDavid, promising to provide him and his sons with a lamp for ever.7 Noluit autem Dominus disperdere domum David propter pactum, quod inierat cum eo, et quia promiserat, ut daret ei lucernam et filiis eius omni tempore.
In his time Edom threw off the domination of Judah and set up a king for itself.8 In diebus illis rebellavit Edom, ne esset subditus Iudae, et constituit sibi regem.
Jehoram crossed the frontier, and with him his commanders and al his chariots. Under cover of dark,he and his chariot commanders broke through the Edomites surrounding him.9 Cumque transisset Ioram cum principibus suis et cunctis curribus, qui erant secum, surrexit nocte et percussit Edom, qui eum circumdederat, et omnes duces curruum eius.
Thus Edom threw off the domination of Judah and has remained free to the present day. Libnahrevolted against him at the same time, because he had abandoned Yahweh, God of his ancestors.10 Attamen rebellavit Edom, ne esset sub dicione Iudae, usque ad hanc diem. Eo tempore et Lobna recessit, ne esset sub manu illius; dereliquerat enim Dominum, Deum patrum suorum.
What is more, he set up high places in the highlands of Judah, leading the citizens of Jerusalem andthe people of Judah into apostasy.11 Insuper et excelsa fabricatus est in montibus Iudae et fornicari fecit habitatores Ierusalem et praevaricari Iudam.
Something written by the prophet Elijah then came into his hands. It said, 'Yahweh, God of yourancestor David, says this, "Since you have not fol owed the example of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa kingof Judah,12 Allatae sunt autem ei litterae ab Elia propheta, in quibus scriptum erat: “Haec dicit Dominus, Deus David patris tui: Quoniam non ambulasti in viis Iosaphat patris tui et in viis Asa regis Iudae,
but have fol owed the example of the kings of Israel and have led Judah and the citizens ofJerusalem into apostasy, just as the House of Ahab has led Israel into apostasy, and have even murdered yourbrothers, your own family, who were better men than you,13 sed incessisti per iter regum Israel et fornicari fecisti Iudam et habitatores Ierusalem imitatus fornicationem domus Achab, insuper et fratres tuos domum patris tui meliores te occidisti:
Yahweh is going to afflict your people, your sons, your wives and al your property with a greatcalamity,14 ecce Dominus percutiet plaga magna populum tuum, filios et uxores tuas universamque substantiam tuam;
and you yourself with a severe disease affecting your bowels, as a result of which disease, continuing day after day, you wil suffer protrusion of your bowels." '15 tu autem aegrotabis pessimo languore uteri tui, donec egrediantur vitalia tua paulatim per singulos dies ”.
Yahweh then roused the hostility of the Philistines and of the Arabs living near the Cushites againstJehoram.16 Suscitavit ergo Dominus contra Ioram spiritum Philisthinorum et Arabum, qui confines sunt Aethiopibus,
They invaded Judah, forcing their way into it and carrying off all the property to be found in the king'spalace, as wel as his sons and his wives, so that he was left no sons at al except his youngest son Jehoahaz.17 et ascenderunt in terram Iudae et irruperunt in eam diripueruntque cunctam substantiam, quae inventa est in domo regis, insuper et filios eius et uxores, nec remansit ei filius nisi Ioachaz, qui minimus natu erat.
And after al this, Yahweh afflicted him with an incurable disease of the bowels;18 Et post haec omnia percussit eum Dominus alvi languore insanabili.
in due time, after about two years, his bowels protruded as a result of his disease and he died inacute pain. His people did not make a funeral pyre for him, as they had for his ancestors.19 Cumque diei succederet dies, et temporum spatia volverentur, duorum annorum expletus est circulus; et sic longa consumptus tabe, ita ut egereret etiam viscera sua, languore pariter et vita caruit. Mortuusque est in infirmitate pessima, et non fecit ei populus eius secundum morem combustionis exsequias, sicut fecerat maioribus eius.
He was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. He passed away unlamented and was buried in the City of David, though not in the tombs of the kings.20 Triginta duorum annorum fuit, cum regnare coepisset, et octo annis regnavit in Ierusalem. Obiitque nullo relicto desiderio sui; et sepelierunt eum in civitate David, verumtamen non in sepulcro regum.
