1 Rehoboam then went to Shechem, al Israel having come to Shechem to proclaim him king.	1 - Roboamo se ne andò a Sichem, perchè là erasi raccolto tutto Israele per costituirlo re.
2 As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt.	2 Quando Geroboamo, figlio di Nabat, che era in Egitto, (dove era fuggito per scampare dal re Salomone) ebbe notizia di ciò, fece tosto ritorno.
3 They now sent for him, so Jeroboam and al Israel came and spoke as fol ows to Rehoboam,	3 Lo mandarono a chiamare e venne con tutto Israele e parlarono a Roboamo in questi termini:
4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.'	4 «Tuo padre ci ha oppresso sotto un durissimo giogo: sia il tuo governo più mite di quello del padre tuo, che ci impose una schiavitù ben grande e sollevaci un po' dalle gravezze; e così ti serviremo».
5 He said to them, 'Come back to me in three days' time.' And the people went away.	5 Ed egli rispose loro: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni». Partito il popolo,
6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders, who had been in attendance on his father Solomon whilehe was alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?'	6 egli si consigliò coi vecchi, che erano stati consiglieri di Salomone, durante la sua vita, e disse loro: «Che mi consigliate di rispondere al popolo?».
7 They replied, 'If you are fair to these people, pleasant to them and give them a fair reply, they wilremain your servants for ever.'	7 Essi gli risposero: «Se tu asseconderai questo popolo e lo tratterai con miti parole, ti serviranno sempre».
8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance onhim, who had grown up with him.	8 Ma egli abbandonato il consiglio dei vecchi, cominciò a intendersela coi giovani, che erano stati educati con lui ed erano del suo seguito,
9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us"?'	9 e chiese loro: «Che pare a voi? oppure che debbo rispondere a questo popolo, che mi ha detto: -Alleggerisci il giogo, che c'impose il padre tuo?- ».
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer the people who havebeen saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say to them,"My little finger is thicker than my father's loins!	10 Ed essi risposero da giovani educati con lui fra i divertimenti, e dissero: «Così devi parlare al popolo che ti ha detto: - Il tuo padre ci ha oppressi con un giogo pesante e tu devi alleggerircelo. - Così risponderai loro : - Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso dei lombi del padre mio.
11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shal make it heavier stil ! My father controlled youwith the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash!" '	11 Se il padre mio vi impose un giogo pesante, io ve lo renderò ancor più pesante; se il padre mio vi castigò con flagelli io vi strazierò con gli scorpioni -».
12 On the third day, Jeroboam and al the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstructions, 'Come back to me in three days' time.'	12 Venuti dunque Geroboamo e tutto il popolo il terzo giorno da Roboamo, come egli aveva loro intimato,
13 And the king gave them a harsh answer. King Rehoboam, rejecting the advice of the elders,	13 il re, abbandonando il consiglio dei vecchi, rispose parole aspre,
14 spoke to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I shaladd to it. My father control ed you with the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash.'	14 e secondo il consiglio dei giovani rispose: «Il padre mio vi impose un giogo pesante, ma io ve lo renderò ancora più pesante. Il padre mio vi battè colle verghe, io vi strazierò cogli scorpioni».
15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by God, so that Yahwehmight fulfil the promise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat.	15 E non si arrese alle preghiere del popolo, poichè era stabilito da Dio che si adempisse la parola proferita da Aia il Silonita a Geroboamo figlio di Nabat.
16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -no heritage in the son of Jesse! Each of you, to your tents, Israel! Now look to yourown house, David! So Israel went home again.	16 Allora tutto il popolo all'udire le parole così aspre del re, gli parlò in questi termini: «Noi non abbiamo a che fare con Davide, nè abbiamo eredità col figlio di Isai. Ritorni Israele alle sue tende, e tu vattene a governare la casa tua di Davide». E se ne andò Israele alle sue tende,
17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.	17 e così sui figli di Israele, che abitavano nella città di Giuda, regnò Roboamo.
18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram who was in charge of forced labour, the Israelites stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.	18 Mandò allora il re Roboamo, Aduram, che sopraintendeva alle imposte, ma i figli d'Israele lo lapidarono e morì. Allora il re Roboamo s'affrettò a montare sopra il carro e se ne fuggì a Gerusalemme.
19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this.	19 Israele si staccò dalla casa di Davide fino a questi giorni.
