1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Or avvenne che Naas re dei figli d'Ammon morì, e gli successe nel regno il suo figlio.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,	2 Allora David disse: « Userò benevolenza con Hanon figlio di Naas, perchè suo padre usò bontà verso di me ». Poi David mandò dei messi a consolarlo della perdita del padre. Ma giunti che furono nel paese dei figli di Ammon per consolare Hanon,
3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'	3 i principi dei figli di Ammon, dissero ad Hanon: « Forse tu credi che David abbia mandato a consolarti per onorar la memoria di tuo padre e non rifletti che i suoi servi son venuti a esplorare, esaminare e spiare il tuo paese ».
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Allora Hanon fece tosare e radere i servi di David, e, fatte tagliare loro le tuniche dalle natiche fino ai piedi, li rimandò.
5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'	5 Essi se ne andarono e fecero sapere la cosa a David, che mandò loro incontro, perchè avevan ricevuto un grande oltraggio, e ordinò di fermarsi a Gerico, fino a tanto che non fosse cresciuta la loro barba, e allora tornassero.
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.	6 I figli d'Ammòn accorgendosi d'avere fatta ingiuria a David, tanto Hanon che tutto il popolo mandarono mille talenti d'argento per assoldare carri e cavalieri dalla Mesopotamia, dalla Siria, da Maaca, e da Soba.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.	7 Assoldarono trentadue mila carri e il re di Maaca colla sua gente. Questi giunti che furono posero il campo di faccia a Medaba; ed anche i figli d'Ammon si adunarono dalle loro città per la guerra.
8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	8 David, avendo ciò inteso, mandò Gioab con tutto l'esercito degli uomini di valore.
9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.	9 I figli d'Ammon uscirono e si disposero in ordine di battaglia presso la porta della città, e i re venuti in loro aiuto si tennero in disparte nella campagna.
10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	10 Gioab, accortosi che la battaglia era fatta contro di lui di fronte e alle spalle, scelse gli uomini più valorosi di tutto Israele e andò contro i Siri.
11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	11 Il resto del popolo lo affidò al comando di Abisai suo fratello, che li dispose contro i figli d'Ammon.
12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	12 Poi disse: « Se i Siri mi vincono, tu mi darai aiuto: se poi vincessero te i figli d'Ammon, verrò io in tuo soccorso.
13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'	13 Fatti animo, e combattiamo virilmente pel nostro popolo e per la città del nostro Dio: il Signore poi farà ciò che gli parrà bene ».
14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	14 Così Gioab colla sua gente andò ad attaccare i Siri e li mise in fuga.
15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 I figli d'Ammon, vedendo che i Siri eran fuggiti, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abisai fratello di Gioab ed entrarono nella città. Gioab allora se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.
16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 I Siri, vedutisi sconfitti davanti a Israele, spediti dei messi, fecero venire i Siri che eran di là del fiume, dei quali era duce Sofac capo dell'esercito di Adarezer.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.	17 David, risaputa la cosa, radunò tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e si gettò sopra di essi. 18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.	18 Ma i Siri fuggirono dinanzi a Israele, e David uccise ai Siri gli uomini di sette mila carri, quaranta mila uomini a piedi e Sofac capo dell'esercito.
19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 I servi di Adarezer, vedendosi vinti da Israele, passarono a David e si assoggettarono a lui, e la Siria non volle dar più aiuti ai figli d'Ammon.
