NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Dopo ciò morì Nacas, re degli Ammoniti, ed al suo posto divenne re suo figlio.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,	2 Allora Davide disse: "Userò benevolenza con Canun, figlio di Nacas, perché anche suo padre fu benevolo con me". Davide gli inviò dei messaggeri per consolarlo della morte del padre. I servitori di Davide giunsero nel paese degli Ammoniti presso Canun per consolarlo.
3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'	3 Ma i prìncipi degli Ammoniti dissero a Canun: "Forse che Davide intende onorare tuo padre davanti ai tuoi occhi, inviandoti dei consolatori? I suoi servitori non sono forse venuti da te per spiare, perlustrare ed esplorare il paese?".
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Canun prese i servitori di Davide, li fece rasare e dopo aver tagliato loro le vesti a metà fino alle natiche, li rimandò!
5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'	5 Alcuni andarono a informare Davide sul caso di quegli uomini. Poiché costoro provavano grande vergogna, il re mandò a incontrarli e fece dire loro: "Rimanete a Gerico, finché non rispunti la vostra barba, poi farete ritorno".
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.	6 Gli Ammoniti, accortisi di essere venuti in odio a Davide, inviarono, essi e Canun, mille talenti d'argento per prendere a loro servizio carri e cavalieri nel paese dei due fiumi, in Aram Maaca e in Zoba.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.	7 Assoldarono trentaduemila carri e il re di Maaca con il suo esercito, che vennero ad accamparsi di fronte a Màdaba; intanto gli Ammoniti si erano radunati dalle loro città e si erano mossi per la guerra.
8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	8 Udito ciò, Davide inviò Ioab con tutta la truppa dei prodi.
9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.	9 Gli Ammoniti uscirono e si disposero in ordine di battaglia alla porta della città, mentre i re che erano convenuti stavano a parte, nella campagna.
10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	10 Quando Ioab si accorse che aveva un fronte di battaglia davanti e di dietro, fece una selezione tra i migliori d'Israele e li schierò contro gli Aramei.
11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	11 Il resto del suo esercito lo affidò ad Abisài, suo fratello; costoro si schierarono contro gli Ammoniti.
12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	12 Gli disse: "Se gli Aramei avranno il sopravvento su di me, tu verrai in mio aiuto; se invece gli Ammoniti prevarranno sopra di te, io verrò in tuo soccorso.
13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'	13 Coraggio! Dimostriamoci forti per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro Dio; il Signore faccia ciò che gli piacerà!".
14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	14 Ioab e la truppa che era con lui si mossero verso gli Aramei per ingaggiare battaglia, ma questi fuggirono davanti a lui.
15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 Quando gli Ammoniti si accorsero che gli Aramei si erano dati alla fuga, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abisài, fratello di Ioab, rientrando in città. Allora Ioab ritornò a Gerusalemme.
16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Gli Aramei, visto che erano stati battuti da Israele, inviarono messaggeri e fecero venire gli Aramei che si trovavano al di là del fiume; alla loro testa era Sofach, capo dell'esercito di Adad-E'zer.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.	17 Ciò venne riferito a Davide, il quale, radunato tutto Israele e passato il Giordano, li raggiunse e si schierò contro di loro. Davide si dispose per la battaglia contro gli Aramei, che lo attaccarono.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.	18 Gli Aramei fuggirono davanti a Israele e Davide uccise tra gli Aramei settemila cavalieri e quarantamila fanti; quanto a Sofach, capo dell'esercito, lo mise a morte.
19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Gli ufficiali di Adad-E'zer, visto che erano stati battuti da Israele, fecero la pace con Davide, sottomettendosi a lui; gli Aramei non vollero più soccorrere gli Ammoniti.
