1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Or venne a morte Naas re degli Ammoniti, e gli succedette il suo figlio nel regno.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,	2 E David disse: Io userò cortesia verso Hanon figliuolo di Naas: perchè suo padre mi fece de' favori. E David gli mandò ambasciadori a consolarlo sopra la morte del padre. Ma giunti che furon questi sulle terre degli Ammoniti, per consolare Hanon,
3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'	3 I magnati degli Ammoniti dissero ad Hanon: Tu forse ti credi, che per onorar la memoria del padre tuo mandi Davidde a consolarti: e non rifletti, che questi suoi servi son venuti ad esplorare, e disaminare, e osservare il tuo paese.
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Hanon pertanto fece tosare, e radere i servi di David, e fece trinciare le loro robe dalle natiche sino a' piedi, e gli licenziò.
5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'	5 E quelli se n' andarono, e avendo fatta saper la cosa a Davidde, mandò gente incontro ad essi (perocché grande era lo sfregio, che avean sofferto), e ordinò loro di fermarsi in Gerico, per sino a tanto che crescesse loro la barba e allora tornassero.
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.	6 Ma gli Ammoniti riflettendo all'ingiuria fatta a Davidde, tanto Hanon, come tutto il popolo, mandaron mille talenti d'argento per assoldare cocchi, e cavalli della Mesopotamia, e della Siria di Maacha, e di Soba.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.	7 E misero insieme trentadue mila cocchi, e il re di Maacha, colla sua gente. E questi giunti che furono, posero il campo dirimpetto a Medaba. Ed anche i figliuoli di Ammon ratinati dalle loro città, vennero per principiare la guerra.
8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	8 Le quali cose avendo intese David, mandò Gioab con tutte le schiere dei più valorosi.
9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.	9 E i figliuoli di Ammon si mossero, e si posero in ordine di battaglia presso alla porta della città: e i re, che erano venuti a soccorrerli, si tennero separatamente nella campagna.
10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	10 Gioab adunque comprendendo, come si volea combatterlo di fronte, e alle spalle, scelse gli uomini più valorosi di tutto Israele, e andò contro i Siri.
11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	11 E del rimanente del popolo diede il comando ad Abisai suo fratello: e questi si mossero contro i figliuoli di Ammon:
12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	12 E disse: Se i Siri mi faran piegare, tu mi darai soccorso: e se i figliuoli di Ammon ti vincessero, sarò in tuo aiuto.
13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'	13 Fatti animo, e combattiam virilmente pel nostro popolo, e per le città del nostro Dio: il Signore poi faccia quel, che a lui piacerà.
14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	14 Allora Gioab, e la gente, che era con lui si mossero per assalire i Siri: e gli sbaragliarono.
15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 E i figliuoli di Ammon veggendo,come i Siri eran fuggiti, voltarono anch'essi le spalle ad Abisai fratello di Gioab, ed entrarono nella città: e Gioab se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.
16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Ma i Soriani veggendo, come erano stati perdenti con Israele, spediron messi, e fecero venire i Soriani, che abitavan di là dal fiume: e Sophach capo delle schiere di Adarezer, era loro condottiere.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.	17 Lo che avendo inteso Davidde, raunò tutto Israele, e passò il Giordano, e ordinato l'esercito in faccia ad essi, gli assalì, resistendo quelli dalla loro parte.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.	18 Ma i Soriani voltaron le spalle ad Israele: e David uccise sette mila uomini dei cocchi, e quaranta mila pedoni con Sophach capo dell'esercito.
19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 E i servi di Adarezer veggendo come erano stati superati da Israele, ricorsero a David, e si soggettarono a lui. È la Siria non volle più dar aiuti a' figliuoli di Ammon.
