NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 After this, when Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Después de esto, murió Najás, el rey de los amonitas, y reinó su hijo en lugar de él.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But when David's representativesreached Hanun in the Ammonites' country to present these condolences,	2 David dijo: «Voy a comportarme lealmente con Janún, hijo de Najás, porque su padre ha sido leal conmigo». Entonces envió a unos mensajeros para presentarle sus condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los amonitas para darle el pésame a Janún,
3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun, 'Do you real y think David means to honour your father when hesends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why his representatives have come to you isto explore, overthrow and reconnoitre the country.'	3 los jefes de los amonitas dijeron a Janún: «¿Crees que David te hace llegar sus condolencias para honrar a tu padre? ¿No será que sus servidores han venido como espías, para sembrar la agitación y explorar el país?».
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved them, cut their clothes off half-way up,right by their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Entonces Janún hizo detener a los servidores de David, los rapó, les cortó la ropa a la altura de las caderas y los despidió.
5 As soon as David was told how the men had been treated, he sent someone to meet them, since themen were overcome with shame. 'Stay in Jericho,' the king said, 'until your beards have grown, and come backthen.'	5 Apenas lo pusieron al tanto de lo sucedido con aquellos hombres, David ordenó que fueran a recibirlos, porque estaban muy avergonzados. Y el rey les mandó a decir: «Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y después vengan».
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent athousand talents of silver to hire chariots and cavalry from the Aramaeans of Upper Mesopotamia, of Maacahand of Zobah.	6 Cuando los amonitas se dieron cuenta de que se habían enemistado con David, Janún y los amonitas enviaron mil talentos de plata para contratar carros de guerra y caballería en Aram Naharaim, en Aram de Maacá y en Sobá.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people, who came andencamped before Medeba, while the Ammonites, having left their towns and mustered, were advancing to thewar.	7 Así contrataron treinta y dos mil carros de guerra y al rey de Maacá con sus tropas, que fueron a acampar frente a Madabá, mientras los amonitas se concentraban fuera de sus ciudades y acudían al combate.
8 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	8 David, al enterarse, envió a Joab con todo el ejército y con sus guerreros.
9 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the kings who hadcome kept their distance in the open country.	9 Los amonitas salieron y formaron en orden de batalla, pero los reyes que habían venido se mantuvieron aparte, en campo abierto.
10 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	10 Cuando Joab vio que había dos frentes de batalla, uno delante de él y otro detrás, seleccionó a lo más escogido de Israel y los alineó frente a los arameos,
11 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	11 dejando el resto de la tropa a las órdenes de su hermano Abisai. Estos tomaron posiciones frente a los amonitas,
12 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	12 y Joab dijo: «Si los arameos son más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo iré a auxiliarte.
13 Be brave and let us fight valiantly, for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God! And letYahweh dispose as he thinks fit!'	13 ¡Animo! ¡Luchemos valerosamente por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que le parezca bien!».
14 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	14 Luego Joab avanzó con sus tropas para enfrentarse con los arameos y estos huyeron delante de él.
15 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from his brother Abishai andwithdrew into the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 Cuando los amonitas vieron que los arameos habían huido, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisai, el hermano de Joab, y entraron en la ciudad, Joab, por su parte, se volvió a Jerusalén.
16 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, sent messengers and mobilised theAramaeans living on the other side of the River, with Shophach, commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Los arameos, al ver que habían sido vencidos por Israel, enviaron mensajeros para movilizar a los arameos del otro lado del Río. 17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan, made contact with them andtook up position near them. David drew up his line of battle facing the Aramaeans, who then engaged him.	17 Cuando informaron de esto a David, él concentró a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán, llegó adonde ellos estaban y tomó posiciones contra ellos. 18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; and also Shophach, the commander of the army.	18 Los arameos huyeron delante de Israel, y David mató a siete mil soldados de caballería y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie. También dio muerte a Sofác, el jefe del ejército.
19 When Hadadezer's vassals saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace with Davidand became his subjects. The Aramaeans were unwil ing to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Cuando los que estaban al servicio de Hadadézer vieron que Israel los había derrotado, hicieron las paces con David y le quedaron sometidos. En adelante, los arameos no quisieron prestar más ayuda a los amonitas.
