NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
'Listen to the word of Yahweh,' Elisha said. 'Yahweh says this, "By this time tomorrow a measure offinest flour wil sel for one shekel, and two measures of barley for one shekel, at the gate of Samaria." '1 Dixit autem Eliseus: “ Audite verbum Domini. Haec dicit Dominus: In tempore hoc cras modius similae uno statere erit, et duo modii hordei statere uno in porta Samariae ”.
The equerry on whose arm the king was leaning retorted to Elisha, 'Even if Yahweh made windows inthe sky, could this word come true?' 'You wil see it with your own eyes,' Elisha replied, 'though you will eat noneof it.'2 Respondens dux, super cuius manum rex incumbebat, homini Dei ait: “ Si Dominus fecerit etiam cataractas in caelo, numquid poterit esse, quod loqueris? ”. Qui ait: “ Videbis oculis tuis et inde non comedes ”.
Now at the entrance to the gate -- for they were afflicted with virulent skin-disease -- there were four men and they debated among themselves, 'Why sit here waiting for death?3 Quattuor ergo viri erant leprosi iuxta introitum portae; qui dixerunt ad invicem: “ Quid hic esse volumus, donec moriamur?
If we decide to go into the city, what with the famine in it, we shal die there; if we stay where we are, weshall die just the same. Come on, let us go over to the Aramaean camp; if they spare our lives, we live; if they kilus, wel , then we die.'4 Sive ingredi voluerimus civitatem, fame moriemur; sive manserimus hic, moriendum nobis est. Venite igitur, et transfugiamus ad castra Syriae. Si pepercerint nobis, vivemus; si autem occidere voluerint, nihilominus moriemur ”.
So at dusk they set out and made for the Aramaean camp, but when they reached the confines of thecamp there was not a soul there.5 Surrexerunt igitur vesperi, ut venirent ad castra Syriae. Cumque venissent ad principium castrorum Syriae, nullum ibidem reppererunt.
For Yahweh had caused the Aramaeans in their camp to hear a noise of chariots and horses, the noiseof a great army; and they had said to one another, 'Listen! The king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptiankings against us, to attack us.'6 Siquidem Dominus sonitum audiri fecerat in castris Syriae curruum et equorum et exercitus plurimi; dixeruntque ad invicem: “ Ecce mercede conduxit adversum nos rex Israel reges Hetthaeorum et Aegyptiorum, ut venirent contra nos ”.
So in the dusk they had made off and fled, abandoning their tents, their horses and their donkeys;leaving the camp just as it was, they had fled for their lives.7 Surrexerunt ergo et fugerunt in tenebris et dereliquerunt tentoria sua et equos et asinos, castra, sicut erant; fugeruntque animas tantum suas salvare cupientes.
The men with skin-disease, then, reached the confines of the camp. They went into one of the tents andate and drank, and from it carried off silver and gold and clothing; these they took and hid. Then they came backand, entering another tent, looted it too, and took and hid their booty.8 Igitur cum venissent leprosi illi ad principium castrorum, ingressi sunt unum tabernaculum et comederunt et biberunt; tuleruntque inde argentum et aurum et vestes et abierunt et absconderunt. Et rursum reversi sunt ad aliud tabernaculum, et inde similiter auferentes absconderunt.
Then they said to one another, 'We are doing wrong. This is a day of good news, yet we are holding ourtongues! If we wait til morning, we shal certainly be punished. Come on, let us go and take the news to thepalace.'9 Dixeruntque ad invicem: “ Non recte facimus; haec enim dies boni nuntii est, et nos tacemus. Si noluerimus nuntiare usque mane, sceleris arguemur; venite, eamus et nuntiemus in aula regis ”.
Off they went and shouted out to the guards on the city gate, 'We have been to the Aramaean camp. There was not a soul there, no sound of anyone, only tethered horses and tethered donkeys, and their tents justas they were.'10 Cumque venissent, vocaverunt portarios civitatis et narraverunt eis dicentes: “ Ivimus ad castra Syriae et nullum ibidem repperimus hominum nisi equos et asinos alligatos et tentoria, sicut erant ”.
The gatekeepers shouted the news, which was reported inside the palace.11 Clamaverunt ergo portarii et nuntiaverunt in palatio regis intrinsecus.
The king got up while it was still dark and said to his officers, 'I can tel you what the Aramaeans havedone to us. They know we are starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the open country. "They wil comeout of the city," they think, "we shall catch them alive and get into the city." '12 Qui surrexit nocte et ait ad servos suos: “ Dico vobis quid fecerint nobis Syri. Sciunt quia fame laboramus, et idcirco egressi sunt de castris et latitant in agris dicentes: “Cum egressi fuerint de civitate, capiemus eos viventes, et tunc civitatem ingredi poterimus” ”.
One of his officers replied, 'Five of the surviving horses stil left us had better be taken -- they would diein any case like al the rest. Let us send them and see.'13 Respondit autem unus servorum eius: “ Tollamus quinque equos, qui remanserunt in urbe; fiant sicut universa multitudo Israel, quae consumpta est; mittamus ergo et videamus ”.
So they took two chariot teams and the king sent them after the Aramaean army, saying, 'Go and see.'14 Adduxerunt ergo duos currus cum equis, misitque rex post exercitum Syrorum dicens: “ Ite et videte ”.
They fol owed them as far as the Jordan, finding the whole way strewn with clothes and gear which theAramaeans had thrown away in their panic. The scouts returned and informed the king.15 Qui abierunt post eos usque ad Iordanem; ecce autem omnis via plena erat vestibus et vasis, quae proiecerant Syri, cum turbarentur. Reversique nuntii indicaverunt regi.
Then the people went out and plundered the Aramaean camp: a measure of finest flour sold for oneshekel, and two measures of barley for one shekel, as Yahweh had promised they would.16 Et egressus populus diripuit castra Syriae; factusque est modius similae statere uno, et duo modii hordei statere uno iuxta verbum Domini.
The king had detailed the equerry, on whose arm he leaned, as commander of the guard on the gate, but the people trampled on him in the gateway and he died, as the man of God had foretold when the king hadcome down to him.17 Porro rex ducem illum, in cuius manu incumbebat, constituit ad portam; quem conculcavit turba in introitu, et mortuus est iuxta quod locutus fuerat vir Dei, quando descenderat rex ad eum.
(What Elisha had said to the king came true, 'Two measures of barley wil sel for one shekel, and ameasure of finest flour for one shekel, by this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria.'18 Factumque est secundum sermonem viri Dei, quem dixerat regi, quando ait: “ Duo modii hordei statere uno erunt, et modius similae statere uno hoc eodem tempore cras in porta Samariae ”;
And the equerry in question had replied to the man of God, 'Even if Yahweh made windows in the sky, could this word come true?' 'You wil see it with your own eyes,' Elisha had answered, 'though you wil eat noneof it.'19 quando responderat dux ille viro Dei et dixerat: “ Etiamsi Dominus fecerit cataractas in caelo, numquid fieri poterit, quod loqueris? ”, et dixerat ei: “ Videbis oculis tuis et inde non comedes ”.
And that was what happened to him: for the people trampled on him in the gateway and he died.)20 Evenit ergo ei, sicut praedictum erat, et conculcavit eum populus in porta, et mortuus est.
