1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.	1 David, fatta la rassegna della sua gente, costituiti sopra di essa i tribuni e centurioni,
2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'	2 mise una terza parte dei soldati sotto Gioab, una terza parte sotto Abisai, figlio di Sarvia, fratello di Gioab, e una terza parte sotto Etai Geteo. Avendo il re detto al popolo: « Verrò anch'io con voi »,
3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'	3 Il popolo gli rispose: « Tu non devi venire; perchè riguardo a noi, dato anche che si fugga, a loro importerà poco, ed anche se cadiamo la metà, non se ne curano tanto; perchè tu solo conti per dieci mila. E' meglio adunque che tu ci dia aiuto nella città ».
4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.	4 E il re disse a loro: « Ebbene, farò ciò che vi sembra meglio ». Il re allora si fermò presso la porta, mentre il popolo ne usciva a schiere di cento e di mille uomini.
5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.	5 Il re diede a Gioab, ad Abisai e ad Etai quest'ordine: « Salvatemi il figlio Assalonne ». Tutto il popolo senti il re dare a tutti i capi quest'ordine in favore di Assalonne.
6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.	6 Così il popolo uscì in campagna contro Israele, e la battaglia ebbe luogo nel bosco di Efraim,
7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.	7 ove il popolo d'Israele fu sconfitto dall'esercito di David, e avvenne in quel giorno una grande strage di venti mila uomini.
8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.	8 La battaglia si estese sulla superficie di tutta la terra, e in quel giorno ne divorò più la selva di quello che non ne avesse uccisi la spada.
9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.	9 Or avvenne che Assalonne s'imbattesse nei soldati di David. Egli cavalcava un mulo, ed essendo entrato il mulo sotto una quercia fronzuta e grande, il capo d'Assalonne restò impigliato alla quercia, in modo che egli restò sospeso fra cielo e terra, e il mulo da lui cavalcato passò oltre.
10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'	10 Un uomo, avendolo veduto, lo riferì a Gioab, dicendo: « Ho veduto Assalonne sospeso ad una quercia ».
11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'	11 Gioab disse all'uomo che gli dava tal notizia: « Se l'hai visto, perchè non l'hai conficcato in terra, che io t'avrei dato dieci sicli d'argento e una cintura? »
12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."	12 Quell'uomo rispose a Gioab: « Quand'anche mi pesassi in mano mille sicli d'argento, non stenderei la mano contro il figlio del re, perchè noi abbiamo udito l'ordine che il re ha dato a te, ad Abisai e ad Etai: Salvatemi il figlio Assalonne.
13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'	13 E se io avessi agito audacemente contro l'anima mia, tal cosa non avrebbe potuto restar nascosta al re, e tu mi staresti contro ».
14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.	14 Ma Gioab disse: « Invece di far come dici, andrò a trafiggerlo in tua presenza ». Presi adunque tre giavellotti, li conficcò nel cuore di Assalonne, ma siccome egli palpitava ancora appeso alla quercia,
15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.	15 accorsero dieci giovani, scudieri di Gioab, e lo percossero e lo uccisero.
16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.	16 Allora Gioab fece suonar la tromba, e tenne il popolo dall'inseguire Israele che fuggiva, volendo risparmiare la moltitudine.
17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.	17 Presero poi Assalonne, e lo gettarono nel bosco, in una grande fossa, ed innalzarono sopra di lui un grandissimo mucchio di pietre, e tutto Israele se ne fuggì alle sue tende.
18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.	18 Mentre viveva, Assalonne si era eretto un monumento che è nella valle del re, perchè diceva: « Non avendo io figli, sarà questo una memoria del mio nome ». Diede il suo nome a quel monumento che si chiama anch'oggi « la Mano d'Assalonne ».
19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'	19 Intanto Achimaas, figlio di Sadoc diceva: « Lasciatemi correre a riferire al re come il Signore gli ha fatto giustizia contro i suoi nemici ».
20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'	20 Ma Gioab gli disse: « Oggi non devi andare a portar notizie, vi andrai un altro giorno: oggi non voglio che tu porti nuove, perchè il figlio del re è morto ».
21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.	21 Gioab disse a Cusi: « Va a riferire al re quello che hai veduto ». Cusi, inchinatosi a Gioab, corse via.
22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'	22 Ma Achimaas figlio di Sadoc disse di nuovo a Gioab: « Che cosa impedisce che corra anch'io dietro a Cusi? » Gioab gli disse: « Perchè vuoi tu correre, figlio mio? Tu non sarai apportatore di buona notizia ».
23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.	23 Achimaas riprese: « Che avverrà mai se fo questa corsa? » E Gioab gli disse: « Corri ». Achimaas, presa la scorciatoia, passò avanti a Cusi.
24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.	24 Or David sedeva tra le due porte, quando la sentinella, che stava in cima alla porta sul muro, alzati gli occhi, vide un uomo che correva tutto solo.
25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'	25 Gridando ad alta voce, l'annunzio al re, il quale disse: « Se è solo reca buone nuove ». Mentre quello, correndo, seguitava ad avvicinarsi,
26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'	26 La sentinella vide un altro uomo che correva, e gridando dall'alto, disse: « Vedo un altro uomo che corre tutto solo ». E il re disse: « Anche questo porta buone nuove ».
27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'	27 La sentinella disse: « Riscontro nel modo di correre del primo il modo di correre di Achimaas figlio di Sadoc ». E il re disse: « E' un uomo dabbene, e viene a portar buone nuove ».
28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'	28 Achimaas gridò e disse al re: « Dio ti salvi, o re! » Prostratosi poi per terra dinanzi a lui e adoratolo, disse: « Benedetto il Signore Dio tuo, che ha messi alle strette coloro che alzarono le mani contro il re mio signore ».
29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'	29 Il re disse: « Il figlio (mio) Assalonne è salvo? » Achimaas disse: « Io vidi un gran tumulto, quando il tuo servo Gioab, o re, spediva me tuo servo; io non so altro».
30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.	30 E il re gli disse: «Entra e fermati qui ». Egli entrò e si fermò,
31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'	31 e subito comparve Cusi, il quale arrivando disse: « Io porto buona nuova, o re, mio signore: oggi il Signore ha giudicato in tuo favore liberandoti dalle mani di tutti coloro che si eran levati contro di te ».
32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'	32 Ma il re disse a Cusi: « Il figlio (mio) Assalonne è salvo? » Cusi gli rispose: « Diventino come quel figlio tutti i nemici del mio signore, tutti quelli che insorgono contro di lui nel male ».
	33 Allora il re contristato salì alla camera che era sopra la porta, e pianse. E nell'andare diceva: « Figlio mio Assalonne, Assalonne figlio mio. Chi mi concederà di poter morire per te, Assalonne figlio mio, figlio mio Assalonne? »
