1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.	1 - Passato in rassegna il suo popolo, Davide costituì sopra di esso tribuni e centurioni,
2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'	2 e ne affidò il comando di una terza parte a Joab, di un'altra terza parte a Abisai figlio di Sarvia fratello di Joab e dell'altro terzo ad Etai oriundo di Get. Poi il re disse al popolo: «Anch'io verrò con voi».
3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'	3 Ma gli fu risposto: «Non devi venire: poichè se poi prenderemo la fuga non importerà loro gran che di noi; e se anche una metà di noi cadrà, non se ne cureranno molto; tu solo infatti conti per diecimila. È meglio, pertanto, che dalla città tu ci presti il tuo soccorso».
4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.	4 Il re rispose loro: «Io farò quel che voi credete opportuno». Il re adunque se ne stette alla porta, mentre l'esercito usciva a schiere di cento e di mille.
5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.	5 Diede poi ordine a Joab, ad Abisai e a Etai, dicendo: «Risparmiatemi il mio figlio Absalom». E tutto il popolo intese l'ordine dato ai capi nei riguardi di Absalom.
6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.	6 Uscito il popolo in aperta campagna contro Israele, la battaglia si impegnò nella foresta di Efraim.
7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.	7 Ed ivi il popolo d'Israele fu battuto dall'esercito di Davide e la strage in quel giorno fu grande e furono uccisi ventimila uomini.
8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.	8 Il combattimento si estese per tutto il territorio, e furono assai più quelli che in quel giorno morirono nella foresta che non quelli che furono trucidati dalla spada.
9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.	9 Accadde che Absalom, che cavalcava un mulo, si imbattè nei soldati di Davide. Passando il mulo sotto una gran quercia fronzuta, la testa di Absalom rimase impigliata nei rami della quercia, ed egli restò sospeso fra cielo e terra, mentre il mulo, su cui stava, tirò innanzi.
10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'	10 Lo vide un tale che ne informò Joab, dicendo: «Ho visto Absalom penzolare da una quercia».
11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'	11 Joab disse a chi gli dava l'annunzio: «Se l'hai visto, perchè non lo conficcasti contro terra? Io t'avrei dato dieci sicli d'argento ed una cintura»;
12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."	12 ma quegli rispose a Joab: «Neppur se tu mi avessi contato nelle mani mille monete d'argento, non avrei steso la mia mano contro il figlio del re; poichè noi udimmo che il re diede a te, ad Abisai, e ad Etai questo ordine: - Risparmiatemi il mio figlio Absalom. -
13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'	13 Che se io avessi agito audacemente contro la mia anima, la cosa non avrebbe potuto restare nascosta al re, e tu saresti stato contro di me».
14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.	14 Ma Joab disse: «Non sia come tu vuoi; ma io stesso lo affronterò alla tua presenza». E prese in mano tre lance, le infisse nel cuore di Absalom, e mentre ancora palpitava sospeso alla quercia,
15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.	15 accorsero dieci giovani scudieri di Joab, che coi loro colpi lo finirono.
16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.	16 Allora Joab sonò la tromba e trattenne il popolo dall'inseguire Israele che fuggiva volendo risparmiare la moltitudine.
17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.	17 E preso Absalom, lo gettarono nella foresta in una gran fossa, sulla quale accumularono un grandissimo mucchio di pietre. E tutto Israele fuggì alle sue tende.
18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.	18 Absalom erasi eretto, mentre era ancora in vita, un monumento nella Valle del re, poichè diceva: «Non avendo figliuoli, questo sarà il ricordo del mio nome», e chiamò il monumento col nome suo; cosicchè ancor oggi è chiamato " la Mano di Absalom ".
19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'	19 Achimaas figlio di Sadoc disse allora: «Correrò ad annunziare al re che il Signore ha fatto giustizia in suo favore, [liberandolo] dalle mani di tutti i nemici di lui»;
20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'	20 ma Joab gli disse: «Non porterai oggi la notizia, ma l'annunzierai più tardi; non voglio che tu oggi abbia a dare l'annunzio, poichè è morto il figlio del re».
21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.	21 Disse poi Joab a Cusi: «Va' e annunzia al re ciò che hai visto». Cusi s'inchino a Joab e partì di corsa.
22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'	22 Di nuovo Achimaas figlio di Sadoc disse a Joab: «Che cosa impedisce che anch'io corra dietro a Cusi?». Gli rispose Joab: «Perchè vuoi correre, figlio mio, se non puoi essere apportatore di buona novella?»;
23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.	23 e quegli soggiunse: «E che accadrà se anch'io correrò?», e Joab gli rispose: «E tu vattene». Achimaas allora, correndo per la via della pianura, prevenne Cusi.
24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.	24 Davide se ne stava seduto tra le due porte. La sentinella, che trovavasi sulla parte più alta del muro della porta, alzando gli occhi vide un uomo accorrere tutto solo,
25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'	25 e alzando la voce lo indicò al re, il quale disse: «Se è solo, apporta una buona novella». Mentre quegli veniva sempre più accostandosi,
26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'	26 la sentinella vide un altro uomo venire di corsa, e alzando la voce dal luogo elevato dove era, soggiunse: «Mi par di vedere un altro uomo accorrere da solo». Soggiunse il re: «Anche costui porta buone nuove».
27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'	27 E la sentinella: «Veggo» disse «che il modo di correre del primo assomiglia al modo di correre di Achimaas figlio di Sadoc». E il re disse: «È un uomo dabbene che viene apportatore di buona novella».
28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'	28 Gridando poi Achimaas disse al re: «Salve, o re!», e prostrandosi dinanzi a lui soggiunse: «Benedetto il Signore Dio tuo che ha messo alle strette gli uomini che hanno levato le loro mani contro il re mio signore».
29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'	29 E disse il re: «È salvo il figliuol mio Absalom?». Achimaas rispose: «Ho visto un grande scompiglio al momento in cui il tuo servo Joab, o re, inviò me tuo servo e non so altro».
30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.	30 E il re disse: «Passa e attendi qui». Quando egli si fu tratto in disparte,
31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'	31 apparve Cusi, che nel venire disse: «Ti apporto una buona novella, o re mio signore, perchè oggi il Signore ha sentenziato in tuo favore, [liberandoti] dalla mano di tutti quelli che insorsero contro di te».
32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'	32 Il re disse allora a Cusi: «È salvo il figliuol mio Absalom?»; Cusi gli rispose: «Diventino come il figliuol tuo i nemici del re mio signore e tutti quelli che insorgono contro di lui per fargli del male».
	33 Addolorato allora il re salì nella camera della porta e pianse, e nell'andare diceva: «Figliuol mio Absalom! Absalom figlio mio! Chi mi darà di morire per te, Absalom figlio mio, figlio mio Absalom?».
