1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.	1 David passa en revue les hommes qui étaient avec lui et il mit à leur tête des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent.
2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'	2 Ensuite David divisa la troupe en trois: il confia un tiers à Joab, un tiers à Abisaï, fils de Sérouya et frère de Joab, et un tiers à Ittaï de Gat. Le roi dit à la troupe: “Moi aussi j’irai avec vous.”
3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'	3 Mais la troupe répondit: “Non, ne viens pas, car si nous tournons le dos, personne n’y prêtera attention. Si la moitié d’entre nous meurt, personne n’y prêtera attention, mais toi, tu es comme dix mille d’entre nous. Il vaut mieux que tu restes en ville et que tu puisses nous porter secours.”
4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.	4 Le roi leur dit: “Je ferai ce qui vous semble bon.” Il resta donc près de la porte de la ville et toute la troupe sortit par cents et par milles.
5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.	5 Le roi donna cet ordre à Joab, à Abisaï et à Ittaï: “Ménagez le jeune Absalom par égard pour moi.” Toute la troupe entendit cet ordre que le roi donnait aux chefs à propos d’Absalom.
6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.	6 L’armée se mit en campagne et marcha à la rencontre d’Israël; la bataille se déroula dans la forêt d’Éphraïm.
7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.	7 Ce fut une grande défaite pour l’armée d’Israël, les serviteurs de David l’écrasèrent et elle perdit 20 000 hommes.
8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.	8 Le combat s’étendit à tout le secteur et ce jour-là les abrupts de la forêt firent plus de morts que l’épée.
9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.	9 Les serviteurs de David rencontrèrent Absalom par hasard, il était monté sur un mulet et le mulet arriva sous les branches d’un grand chêne. Sa tête se prit dans le chêne et il resta suspendu entre ciel et terre tandis que le mulet continuait sa course.
10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'	10 Un homme l’aperçut et il avertit Joab: “J’ai aperçu Absalom suspendu à un chêne.”
11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'	11 Joab dit à celui qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: “Ainsi tu l’as vu! Pourquoi ne l’as-tu pas frappé sur-le-champ? Je t’aurais donné 10 pièces d’argent et une ceinture.”
12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."	12 Mais l’homme répondit à Joab: “Même si j’avais dans les mains tes 1 000 pièces d’argent, je ne porterais pas la main sur le fils du roi. Devant nous tous le roi a donné cet ordre à toi, à Abisaï et à Ittaï: ‘Épargnez le jeune Absalom par égard pour moi.’
13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'	13 Même si je n’avais rien dit, le roi l’aurait su, et toi, tu te serais tenu à l’écart.”
14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.	14 Joab dit: “Je perds mon temps avec toi.” Il prit dans sa main trois javelots et les enfonça dans le cœur d’Absalom qui était encore en vie dans le chêne.
15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.	15 Ensuite 10 jeunes gens compagnons d’armes de Joab frappèrent Absalom et l’achevèrent.
16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.	16 Alors Joab sonna du cor: il fit retenir la troupe et l’on cessa de poursuivre Israël.
17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.	17 Ils prirent Absalom et le jetèrent dans une grande fosse au milieu de la forêt, et l’on éleva par-dessus un grand tas de pierres. Quant aux Israélites, ils avaient pris la fuite et ils étaient retournés chacun chez soi.
18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.	18 De son vivant Absalom s’était élevé une stèle dans la Vallée du Roi, car il se disait: “Je n’ai pas de fils pour conserver mon nom.” Il avait donné son nom à cette pierre dressée, et aujourd’hui encore on l’appelle ‘le monument d’Absalom.’
19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'	19 Ahimaas fils de Sadoq dit alors: “Je vais courir annoncer au roi cette bonne nouvelle, que Yahvé lui a rendu justice et l’a délivré de ses ennemis.”
20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'	20 Mais Joab lui dit: “Tu ne serais pas porteur d’une bonne nouvelle aujourd’hui, tu le seras peut-être un autre jour mais aujourd’hui ce ne serait certainement pas une bonne nouvelle, puisque le fils du roi est mort.”
21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.	21 Joab dit alors au Kouchite: “Va annoncer au roi ce que tu as vu.” Le Kouchite se prosterna devant Joab et partit en courant.
22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'	22 Ahimaas fils de Sadoq reprit la parole et dit à Joab: “Qu’importe ce qui arrivera. Moi aussi je veux courir derrière ce Kouchite.” Joab lui dit: “Pourquoi courir mon fils? Tu n’en tireras aucune récompense.”
23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.	23 Il répondit: “Peu importe, je veux courir.” Alors Joab lui dit: “Eh bien, cours.” Ahimaas partit en courant, il prit le chemin de la plaine et il devança le Kouchite.
24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.	24 David était assis entre les deux portes, et le guetteur faisait les cent pas sur le toit de la porte, au-dessus du rempart. Il leva les yeux et aperçut un homme qui courait seul.
25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'	25 Le guetteur cria la nouvelle au roi, qui déclara: “S’il est seul, c’est qu’il est porteur de bonne nouvelle.” L’autre pendant ce temps approchait.
26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'	26 Le guetteur aperçut un autre homme qui courait derrière, il appela le portier et lui dit: “Il y a en un autre qui court aussi seul.” Le roi dit: “Celui-là aussi apporte une bonne nouvelle.”
27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'	27 Le guetteur reprit: “Je reconnais le premier, c’est Ahimaas fils de Sadoq, je reconnais sa façon de courir.” Le roi dit: “C’est un homme qui vaut, il apporte sûrement une bonne nouvelle.”
28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'	28 Lorsque Ahimaas fut tout près, il cria: “Salut!” Puis il se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi. “Béni soit Yahvé ton Dieu, dit-il, il a livré les hommes qui s’étaient dressés contre mon seigneur le roi!”
29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'	29 Le roi dit alors: “Le jeune Absalom est-il sauf?” Ahimaas répondit: “Lorsque ton serviteur Joab m’a envoyé, j’ai vu une grande confusion, mais je ne sais pas exactement ce qui se passait.”
30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.	30 Le roi lui dit: “Mets-toi là et attendons.” Il se rangea de côté et attendit.
31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'	31 Derrière lui arrivait le Kouchite; il dit: “Que mon seigneur le roi apprenne la bonne nouvelle: Yahvé t’a fait justice aujourd’hui, il t’a délivré de tous ceux qui s’étaient dressés contre toi.”
32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'	32 Le roi demanda au Kouchite: “Le jeune Absalom est-il sauf?” Le Kouchite lui répondit: “Que les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi, que tous ceux qui se dressent contre lui pour faire le mal, aient le sort de ce jeune homme.”
