2 Samuel 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.	1 David pasó revista al ejército que estaba con él y puso a su cabeza jefes de millar y de cien.
2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'	2 Dividió David el ejército en tres cuerpos: un tercio a las órdenes de Joab; un tercio a las órdenes de Abisay, hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y un tercio a las órdenes de Ittay de Gat. Y dijo David a su ejército: «Yo mismo saldré también con vosotros».
3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'	3 Pero la tropa dijo: «No debes salir, porque si nosotros tenemos que huir, no tendría importancia; aunque muriera la mitad de nosotros no tendría importancia; pero tú eres como 10.000 de nosotros. Es mejor que puedas venir en nuestra ayuda desde la ciudad».
4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.	4 El rey les dijo: «Haré lo que bien os parezca». Se quedó, pues, el rey junto a la puerta y salió todo el ejército por centenares y millares.
5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.	5 El rey ordenó a Joab, Abisay y a Ittay: «Tratad bien, por amor a mí, al joven Absalón». Y todo el ejército oyó las órdenes del rey a todos los jefes acerca de Absalón.
6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.	6 El ejército salió al campo, al encuentro de Israel, y se trabó la batalla en el bosque de Efraím.
7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.	7 El pueblo de Israel fue derrotado allí por los veteranos de David, y hubo aquel día un gran estrago de 20.000 hombres.
8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.	8 La batalla se extendió por todo aquel contorno y aquel contorno y aquel día devoró el bosque más hombres que la espada.
9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. 11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'	11 Joab dijo al hombre que le avisaba: «Y viéndole ¿por qué no le has derribado allí mismo en tierra, yo te habría dado diez siclos de plata y un cinturón?»
12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."	12 El hombre respondió a Joab: «Aunque pudiera pesar en la palma de mi mano mil siclos de plata, no alzaría mi mano contra el hijo del rey, pues ante nuestros oídos te ordenó el rey, a ti, a Abisay y a Ittay: “Guardadme al joven Absalón.”
13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'	13 Si me hubiera mentido a mí mismo, expondría mi vida, pues al rey nada se le oculta y tú mismo te hubieras mantenido aparte».
14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.	14 Respondió Joab: «No voy a estarme mirando tu cara». Y tomando tres dardos en su mano los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, que estaba todavía vivo en medio de la encina.
15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.	15 Luego se acercaron diez jóvenes, escuderos de Joab, que hirieron a Absalón y lo remataron.
16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.	16 Joab mandó tocar el cuerno y el ejército dejó de perseguir a Israel, porque Joab retuvo al ejército.
17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.	17 Tomaron a Absalón, le echaron en el bosque en un gran hoyo y pusieron encima un gran montón de piedras; y todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda.
18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.	18 Estando en vida, había decidido Absalón alzarse la estela que está en el valle del rey, pues se había dicho: «No tengo hijo para perpetuar mi nombre», y había puesto a la estela su mismo nombre. Se llama «La Mano de Absalón», hasta el día de hoy.
19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'	19 Ajimaas, hijo de Sadoq, dijo: «Voy a correr y anunciar al rey la buena noticia de que Yahveh le ha librado de manos de sus enemigos».
20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'	20 Pero Joab le dijo; «No serás tú hombre que dé buenas noticias hoy. Otro día las darás; hoy no las darás porque el hijo del rey ha muerto».
21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.	21 Y Joab dijo al kusita: «Anda y anuncia al rey lo que has visto». El kusita se postró ante Joab y partió a la carrera.
22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'	22 Insistió de nuevo Ajimaas, hijo de Sadoq, y dijo a Joab: «Pase lo que pase, yo también quiero correr tras el kusita». Joab le dijo: «¿Para qué vas a correr, hijo mío? aunque vayas, por esta noticia no te van a dar albricias».
23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.	23 El dijo: «Pase lo que pase, voy a correr». Entonces le dijo: «Corre». Ajimaas corrió por el camino de la vega y adelantó al kusita.
24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.	24 Estaba David entre las dos puertas. El centinela que estaba en el terrado de la puerta, sobre la muralla, alzó la vista y vio a un hombre que venía corriendo solo.
25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'	25 Gritó el centinela y se lo comunicó al rey y el dijo: «Si viene solo, hay buenas noticias en su boca». Mientras éste se acercaba corriendo,
26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'	26 vio el centinela otro hombre corriendo y gritó el centinela de la puerta: «Ahí viene otro hombre solo, corriendo». Dijo el rey: «También éste trae buenas noticias».
27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'	27 Dijo el centinela: «Ya distingo el modo de correr del primero: por su modo de correr es Ajimaas, hijo de Sadoq». Dijo el rey: «Es un hombre de bien; viene para dar buenas noticias».
28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'	28 Se acercó Ajimaas y dijo al rey: «¡Paz!», y se postró ante el rey, rostro en tierra. Luego prosiguió: «Bendito sea Yahveh tu Dios que ha sometido a los hombres que alzaban la mano contra mi señor el rey».
29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'	29 Preguntó el rey: «¿Está bien el joven Absalón?» Ajimaas respondió: «Yo vi un gran tumulto cuando el siervo del rey, Joab, envió a tu siervo pero no sé qué era».
30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.	30 El rey dijo: «Pasa y ponte acá». El pasó y se quedó.
31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'	31 Llegó el kusita y dijo: «Recibe, oh rey mi señor, la buena noticia, pues hoy te ha liberado Yahveh de la mano de todos lo que se alzaban contra ti».
32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'	32 Dijo el rey al kusita: «Está bien el joven Absalón?» Respondió el kusita: «Que les suceda como a ese joven a todos los enemigos de mi señor el rey y a todos los que se levantan contra ti para hacerte mal».
