2 Samuel 18

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 David reviewed the troops who were with him and appointed commanders of thousands andcommanders of hundreds to lead them.	1 David passa en revue les troupes qui étaient avec lui et il mit à leur tête des chefs de mille et deschefs de cent.
2 David divided the army into three groups, one under the command of Joab, another under thecommand of Abishai son of Zeruiah and brother of Joab, and the third under the command of Ittai the Gittite.David then said to the troops, 'I shal take the field in person with you.'	2 David divisa l'armée en trois corps: un tiers aux mains de Joab, un tiers aux mains d'Abishaï, filsde Ceruya et frère de Joab, un tiers aux mains d'Ittaï de Gat. Puis David dit aux troupes: "Je partirai en guerreavec vous moi aussi."
3 But the troops replied, 'You are not to take the field. No one wil bother about us if we run away, theywil not even bother about us if half of us are kil ed, but you are ten thousand times more valuable. So it is betterif you stay inside the town, in case we need reinforcements.'	3 Mais les troupes répondirent: "Tu ne dois pas partir. Car, si nous prenions la fuite, on n'y feraitpas attention, et si la moitié d'entre nous mourait, on n'y ferait pas attention, tandis que toi tu es comme 10.000d'entre nous. Et puis, il vaut mieux que tu nous sois un secours prêt à venir de la ville."
4 David said, 'I will do what you think best.' And the king stood beside the gate as the troops marchedout by their hundreds and their thousands.	4 David leur dit: "Je ferai ce qui vous semble bon." Le roi se tint à côté de la porte, tandis quel'armée sortait par unités de cent et de mille.
5 The king gave orders to Joab, Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake, treat young Absalom gently!' And thetroops all heard the king give al the commanders these orders about Absalom.	5 Le roi fit un commandement à Joab, à Abishaï et à Ittaï: "Par égard pour moi, ménagez le jeuneAbsalom!" et toute l'armée entendit que le roi donnait à tous les chefs cet ordre concernant Absalom.
6 So the troops marched out into the open to engage Israel, and the battle took place in the Forest ofEphraim.	6 L'armée sortit en pleine campagne à la rencontre d'Israël et la bataille eut lieu dans la forêtd'Ephraïm.
7 There, the army of Israel was beaten by David's retainers; it was a great defeat that day, with twentythousand casualties.	7 L'armée d'Israël y fut battue devant la garde de David, et ce fut ce jour-là une grande défaite, quifrappa 20.000 hommes.
8 The fighting spread throughout the region and that day the forest claimed more victims than the sword.	8 Le combat s'éparpilla dans toute la région et, ce jour-là, la forêt fit dans l'armée plus de victimesque l'épée.
9 Absalom happened to run into some of David's guards. Absalom was riding his mule and the mulepassed under the thick branches of a great oak. Absalom's head got caught in the oak and he was left hangingbetween heaven and earth, while the mule he was riding went on.	9 Absalom se heurta par hasard à des gardes de David. Absalom montait un mulet et le mulets'engagea sous la ramure d'un grand chêne. La tête d'Absalom se prit dans le chêne et il resta suspendu entre cielet terre tandis que continuait le mulet qui était sous lui.
10 Someone saw this and reported to Joab, 'I have just seen Absalom hanging from an oak.'	10 Quelqu'un l'aperçut et prévint Joab: "Je viens de voir, dit-il, Absalom suspendu à un chêne."
11 Joab said to the man who had informed him, 'If you saw him, why did you not strike him to theground then and there? I would have made it my business to give you ten silver shekels and a belt!'	11 Joab répondit à l'homme qui portait cette nouvelle: "Puisque tu l'as vu, pourquoi ne l'as-tu pasabattu sur place? J'aurais pris sur moi de te donner dix sicles d'argent et une ceinture!"
12 The man replied to Joab, 'Even if I could feel the weight of a thousand silver shekels in my hand, Iwould not lift my hand against the king's son. In our own hearing, the king gave you and Abishai and Ittai theseorders, "For my sake, spare young Absalom."	12 Mais l'homme répondit à Joab: "Quand même je soupèserais dans mes paumes mille siclesd'argent, je ne porterais pas la main sur le fils du roi! C'est à nos oreilles que le roi t'a donné cet ordre ainsi qu'àAbishaï et à Ittaï: Par égard pour moi, épargnez le jeune Absalom.
13 Even if I had deceived myself, nothing stays hidden from the king and you would have dissociatedyourself from me.'	13 Que si je m'étais menti à moi-même, rien ne reste caché au roi, et toi, tu te serais tenu àdistance."
14 Joab then said, 'I cannot waste time arguing with you!' And, taking three darts in his hand, he plantedthem in Absalom's heart, while he was stil alive, deep in the oak-tree.	14 Alors Joab dit: "Je ne vais pas ainsi perdre mon temps avec toi." Il prit en mains trois javelots etles planta dans le coeur d'Absalom encore vivant au milieu du chêne.
15 Ten soldiers, Joab's armour-bearers, then came in close, struck Absalom and kil ed him.	15 Puis s'approchèrent dix cadets, les écuyers de Joab, qui frappèrent Absalom et l'achevèrent.
16 Joab then had the trumpet sounded, and the troops left off pursuing Israel, since Joab held thetroops back.	16 Joab fit alors sonner du cor et l'armée cessa de poursuivre Israël, car Joab retint l'armée.
17 They took Absalom, flung him into a deep pit in the forest and raised a huge cairn over him. Al theIsraelites had fled, dispersing to their homes.	17 On prit Absalom, on le jeta dans une grande fosse en pleine forêt et on dressa sur lui un énormemonceau de pierres. Tous les Israélites s'étaient enfuis, chacun à ses tentes.
18 Now, during his lifetime, Absalom had made and erected a pillar to himself, which is in the Val ey ofthe King. 'I have no son', he said, 'to preserve the memory of my name.' He gave his own name to the pil ar, andtoday it is still cal ed Absalom's Monument.	18 De son vivant, Absalom avait entrepris de s'ériger la stèle qui est dans la vallée du Roi, car ils'était dit: "Je n'ai pas de fils pour commémorer mon nom", et il avait donné son nom à la stèle. On l'appelleencore aujourd'hui le monument d'Absalom.
19 Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, 'Let me run and tel the king the good news that Yahweh has vindicatedhis cause by ridding him of his enemies.'	19 Ahimaaç, fils de Sadoq, dit: "Je vais courir et annoncer au roi cette bonne nouvelle, que Yahvélui a rendu justice en le délivrant de ses ennemis."
20 But Joab said, 'Today you would be no bearer of good news, some other day you may be; but todayyou would not be bringing good news, since the king's son is dead.'	20 Mais Joab lui dit: "Tu ne serais pas un porteur d'heureux message aujourd'hui; tu le seras unautre jour, mais aujourd'hui tu ne porterais pas une bonne nouvelle, puisque le fils du roi est mort."
21 Joab then said to the Cushite, 'Go and tel the king what you have seen.' The Cushite prostratedhimself to Joab and ran off.	21 Et Joab dit au Kushite: "Va rapporter au roi tout ce que tu as vu." Le Kushite se prosternadevant Joab et partit en courant.
22 But Ahimaaz son of Zadok persisted. 'Come what may,' he said to Joab, 'please let me run after theCushite.' 'My son,' Joab said, 'why run? You wil get no reward for your news.'	22 Ahimaaç, fils de Sadoq, insista encore et dit à Joab: "Advienne que pourra, je veux courir moiaussi derrière le Kushite." Joab dit: "Pourquoi courrais-tu, mon fils, tu n'en tireras aucune récompense."
23 But he replied, 'Come what may, let me run!' and Joab said 'Run, then!' So Ahimaaz ran off along theroad through the Plain, outrunning the Cushite.	23 Il reprit: "Advienne que pourra, je courrai!" Joab lui dit: "Cours donc." Et Ahimaaç partit encourant par le chemin de la Plaine et il dépassa le Kushite.
24 David was sitting between the two gates. The sentry, having gone up to the roof of the gate, lookedout from the ramparts and saw a man running alone.	24 David était assis entre les deux portes. Le guetteur étant monté à la terrasse de la porte, sur lerempart, leva les yeux et aperçut un homme qui courait seul.
25 The sentry cal ed down to the king and told him. The king said, 'If he is alone, he is bringing goodnews.'	25 Le guetteur cria et avertit le roi, et le roi dit: "S'il est seul, c'est qu'il a une bonne nouvelle surles lèvres." Comme celui-là continuait d'approcher,
26 As the man drew steadily nearer, the lookout man saw another man running, and the sentry abovethe gate shouted, 'Here comes another man, running alone!' David said, 'He too is a bearer of good news.'	26 le guetteur vit un autre homme qui courait, et le guetteur qui était sur la porte cria: "Voici unautre homme, qui court seul." Et David dit: "Celui-ci est encore un messager de bon augure."
27 The sentry said, 'I recognise the way the first man runs; Ahimaaz son of Zadok runs like that.' 'He is agood man', said the king, 'and comes with good news.'	27 Le guetteur dit: "Je reconnais la façon de courir du premier, c'est la façon de courir d'Ahimaaç,fils de Sadoq." Le roi dit: "C'est un homme de bien, il vient pour une bonne nouvelle."
28 Ahimaaz went up to the king. 'All hail!' he said, prostrating himself on the ground before the king.'Blessed be Yahweh your God', he said, 'who has handed over the men who rebel ed against my lord the king!'	28 Ahimaaç s'approcha du roi et dit: "Salut!" Il se prosterna face contre terre devant le roi etpoursuivit: "Béni soit Yahvé ton Dieu qui a livré les hommes qui avaient levé la main contre Monseigneur leroi!"
29 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked. Ahimaaz replied, 'I saw a great commotion whenJoab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, but I do not know what it was.'	29 Le roi demanda: "En va-t-il bien pour le jeune Absalom?" Et Ahimaaç répondit: "J'ai vu ungrand tumulte au moment où Joab, serviteur du roi, envoyait ton serviteur, mais je ne sais pas ce que c'était."
30 The king said, 'Go and stand over there.' He stood to one side and waited.	30 Le roi dit: "Range-toi et tiens-toi là." Il se rangea et attendit.
31 Then the Cushite arrived. 'Good news for my lord the king!' the Cushite shouted. 'Today Yahweh hasvindicated your cause, by ridding you of al who had risen up against you.'	31 Alors arriva le Kushite et il dit: "Que Monseigneur le roi apprenne la bonne nouvelle. Yahvé t'arendu justice aujourd'hui en te délivrant de tous ceux qui s'étaient dressés contre toi."
32 'Is al wel with young Absalom?' the king asked the Cushite. 'May the enemies of my lord the king',the Cushite answered, 'and al who rise up to harm you, share the fate of that young man!'	32 Le roi demanda au Kushite: "En va-t-il bien pour le jeune Absalom?" Et le Kushite répondit:"Qu'ils aient le sort de ce jeune homme, les ennemis de Monseigneur le roi et tous ceux qui se sont dresséscontre toi pour le mal!"
