1 Two years later it happened that Pharaoh had a dream: there he was, standing by the Nile,	1 Due anni dopo, Faraone ebbe un sogno. Gli pareva di stare alla riva del fiume,
2 and there, coming up from the Nile, were seven cows, sleek and fat, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.	2 da cui salivano sette vacche oltremodo belle e grasse a pascolare nella giuncaia.
3 And then seven other cows, wretched and lean, came up from the Nile, behind them; and these wentover and stood beside the other cows on the bank of the Nile.	3 Dopo queste, dal fiume salivano sette altre, brutte e sfinite dalla magrezza, e si mettevano a pascolare sulla stessa riva del fiume dove era del verde,
4 The wretched and lean cows ate the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.	4 e divorarono quelle che eran belle di aspetto e grasse. Svegliatosi Faraone,
5 He fel asleep and dreamed a second time: there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, fulland ripe.	5 si addormentò di nuovo, ed ebbe un altro sogno: Sette spighe piene e bellissime si ergevano sopra un unico stelo;
6 And then sprouting up, behind them, came seven ears of grain, meagre and scorched by the eastwind.	6 ma ecco sorgere altrettante spighe smilze ed arse dal vento infocato,
7 The scanty ears of grain swal owed the seven ful and ripe ears of grain. Then Pharaoh woke up; ithad been a dream.	7 divorare tutte le prime, che erano sì belle.
8 In the morning Pharaoh, feeling disturbed, had all the magicians and wise men of Egypt summoned tohim. Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret it for Pharaoh.	8 Svegliatosi Faraone dal sonno, pieno di paura, appena venuta la mattina, mandò a chiamare tutti gl'indovini d'Egitto e tutti i sapienti, ai quali radunati raccontò il sogno; ma non vi era chi ne pote sse dare la spiegazione.
9 Then the chief cup-bearer addressed Pharaoh, 'Today, I recal having been at fault.	9 Allora finalmente il gran coppiere si ricordò, e disse: « Confesso il mio fallo:
10 When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, he put myself and the chief baker in custody in thehouse of the commander of the guard.	10 il re, adirato contro i suoi servi, aveva fatto mettere nella prigione del capitano delle milizie me e il capo dei panettieri:
11 We had a dream on the same night, he and I, and each man's dream had a meaning for himself.	11 e tutt'e due una notte vi facemmo un sogno che presagiva il futuro.
12 There was a young Hebrew with us, one of the slaves belonging to the commander of the guard. Wetold our dreams to him and he interpreted them for us, tel ing each of us what his dream meant.	12 Vi era lì un giovanetto ebreo, servo dello stesso capitano delle milizie: a lui raccontammo i sogni
13 It turned out exactly according to his interpretation: I was restored to my position, but the other manwas hanged.'	13 ed udimmo ciò che gli eventi in seguito hanno provato: infatti io fui rimesso nel mio ufficio e l'altro fu appeso al patibolo».
14 Then Pharaoh had Joseph summoned, and they hurried him from the dungeon. He shaved andchanged his clothes, and presented himself before Pharaoh.	14 Subito, per comando del re, Giuseppe fu tratto di prigione: lo raserò, gli cambiarono il vestito e lo presentarono a Faraone,
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard itsaid of you that you can interpret a dream the instant you hear it.'	15 il quale gli disse: « Ho fatto dei sogni, e non v'è chi li possa interpretare: ed ho sentito che tu li sai interpretare con grande saviezza ».
16 'Not I,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, 'God wil give Pharaoh a favourable answer.'	16 Giuseppe rispose: « Non io, ma Dio darà una risposta favorevole a Faraone ».
17 So Pharaoh told Joseph, 'In my dream there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile.	17 E Faraone, narrando quanto aveva veduto, disse: « Mi pareva di stare sulla riva del fiume,
18 And there were seven cows, fat and sleek, coming up out of the Nile, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.	18 e che dal fiume uscissero sette vacche molto belle e grasse, e si misero a pascolare nella giuncaia.
19 And then seven other cows came up, behind them, starved, very wretched and lean; I have neverseen such poor cows in all Egypt.	19 Ed ecco, dietro a queste venirne altre sette, tanto brutte e scarne che non ne ho mai viste uguali nella terra d'Egitto.
20 The lean and wretched cows ate up the first seven fat cows.	20 E queste dopo aver divorate e consumate le prime,
21 But when they had eaten them up, it was impossible to tel they had eaten them, for they looked aswretched as ever. Then I woke up.	21 non dettero alcun segno d'essere satolle, ma restarono magre e squallide come prima. Svegliatomi, fui di nuovo oppresso dal sonno,
22 And then again in my dream, there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, beautiful y ripe;	22 e vidi, sognando, sette spighe piene e bellissime spuntare da unico stelo,
23 but then sprouting up behind them came seven ears of grain, withered, meagre and scorched by theeast wind.	23 poi altre sette smilze, e riarse dal vento infocato, venire su da una stoppia,
24 Then the shrivel ed ears of grain swal owed the seven ripe ears of grain. I have told the magicians,but no one has given me the answer.'	24 e queste divoraron le prime che eran si belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agli indovini; ma nessuno lo sa spiegare ».
25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'Pharaoh's dreams are one and the same: God has revealed to Pharaohwhat he is going to do.	25 Giuseppe rispose: «Il sogno del re si riduce ad uno solo: Dio ha mostrato a Faraone quello che sta per fare.
26 The seven fine cows are seven years and the seven ripe ears of grain are seven years; it is one andthe same dream.	26 Le sette vacche belle e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni d'abbondanza, e nel sogno hanno la stessa significazione;
27 The seven gaunt and lean cows coming up behind them are seven years, as are the seven shrivel edears of grain scorched by the east wind: there wil be seven years of famine.	27 Così le sette vacche scarne e macilente che salivano dopo le prime, e le sette spighe smilze e riarse dal vento infocato sono sette anni di futura carestia.
28 It is as I have told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is going to do.	28 E la cosa si compirà in quest'ordine:
29 Seven years are coming, bringing great plenty to the whole of Egypt,	29 verranno sette anni di grande abbondanza in tutta la terra d'Egitto,
30 but seven years of famine will fol ow them, when al the plenty in Egypt wil be forgotten, and faminewil exhaust the land.	30 dopo i quali verranno sette anni di carestia cosi grande da far dimenticare tutta la passata abbondanza, perchè la fame consumerà la terra,
31 The famine that is to fol ow wil be so very severe that no one wil remember what plenty the countryused to enjoy.	31 e la grandezza della carestia assorbirà la grandezza dell'abbondanza.
32 The reason why Pharaoh had the same dream twice is that the event is already determined by God,and God wil shortly bring it about.	32 L'aver poi tu veduto un secondo sogno che si riferisce alla stessa cosa è segno certo che la parola di Dio sarà avverata nei fatti, e quanto prima.
33 'Pharaoh should now find someone intel igent and wise to govern Egypt.	33 Or dunque il re dovrebbe scegliere un uomo saggio e attivo e costituirlo sopra la terra d'Egitto,
34 Pharaoh should take action and appoint supervisors for the country, and impose a tax of one-fifth onEgypt during the seven years of plenty.	34 affinché egli deputi dei sopraintendenti in ogni regione, per radunare nei granai la quinta parte delle raccolte dei sette anni d'abbondanza,
35 They wil col ect al the food produced during these good years that are coming, and store the grainunder Pharaoh's authority, putting it in the towns and keeping it.	35 che già stanno per cominciare. Poi tutto il frumento deve essere rinchiuso a disposizione di Faraone, e conservato nelle città,
36 This food wil form a reserve for the country against the seven years of famine which are coming onEgypt, so that the country wil not be destroyed by the famine.'	36 affinchè sia pronto per la futura carestia di sette anni che verrà sopra l'Egitto: così il paese non sarà conusmato dalla fame ».
37 Pharaoh and all his ministers approved of what he had said.	37 Il consiglio piacque a Faraone e a tutti i suoi ministri,
38 Then Pharaoh asked his ministers, 'Can we find anyone else endowed with the spirit of God, likehim?'	38 ai quali egli disse: « Potremo noi trovare un uomo come questo, che sia pieno dello spirito di Dio? »
39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has given you knowledge of al this, there can be no one asintelligent and wise as you.	39 Disse pertanto a Giuseppe: « Giacché Dio t'ha mostrato tutto quello che hai detto, potrò io trovare uno più saggio o simile a te?
40 You shall be my chancel or, and al my people shall respect your orders; only this throne shal set meabove you.'	40 Tu avrai la sovrintendenza della mia casa; tutto il popolo obbedirà ai tuoi ordini, ed io non avrò sopra di te che la precedenza del trono ».
41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I hereby make you governor of the whole of Egypt.'	41 E Faraone disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Ecco io ti dò autorità su tutto il paese d'Egitto ».
42 Pharaoh took the ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's. He dressed him in robes of fine linen andput a gold chain round his neck.	42 E toltosi l'anello di mano, lo pose in mano a lui; e lo fece vestire di lini finissimi e gli pose al collo una collana d'oro;
43 He made him ride in the best chariot he had after his own, and they shouted 'Abrek!' ahead of him.Thus he became governor of the whole of Egypt.	43 e lo fece salire sul suo secondo cocchio, e l'araldo gridava che tutti piegassero le ginocchia dinanzi a lui, e sapessero che era sovrintendente di tutto il paese d'Egitto.
44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Although I am Pharaoh, no one is to move hand or foot without yourpermission throughout Egypt.'	44 E il re disse ancora a Giuseppe: « Io sono Faraone: nessuno senza il tuo comando moverà mano o piede in tutto il paese d'Egitto ».
45 Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-Paneah, and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest ofOn, to be his wife. And Joseph began to journey al over Egypt.	45 E gli mutò il nome e lo chiamò in lingua egiziana Salvatore del inondo. E gli diede in moglie Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli. Giuseppe adunque si recò a visitare la terra d'Egitto.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. After leavingPharaoh's presence, Joseph travel ed throughout the length and breadth of Egypt.	46 Aveva trent'anni quando si presentò a Faraone, e fece il giro di tutte le provincie d'Egitto.
47 During the seven years of plenty, the soil yielded generously.	47 Or durante la fertilità di sette anni, il grano legato in covoni, fu radunato nei granai d'Egitto,
48 He col ected al the food of the seven years while there was an abundance in Egypt, and stored thefood in the towns, placing in each the food from the surrounding countryside.	48 e tutto il di più delle raccolte fu riposto in ciascuna città.
49 Joseph gathered in grain like the sand of the sea, in such quantity that he gave up keeping count,since it was past accounting.	49 E l'abbondanza del grano fu sì grande che uguagliò la rena del mare, e sorpassò ogni misura.
50 Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph: Asenath daughter of Potiphera,priest of On, bore him these.	50 Prima che venisse la carestia nacquero a Giuseppe due figlioli, i quali furono partoriti a lui da Asenet figlia di Putifare, sacerdote di Eliopoli.
51 Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me completely forget myhardships and my father's House.'	51 Al primogenito pose il nome di Manasse, dicendo: « Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare ogni mio affanno ed anche la casa di mio padre ».
52 He named the second Ephraim, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me fruitful in the country of mymisfortune.'	52 Al secondo poi diede il nome di Efraim, dicendo: « Il Signore mi ha fatto crescere nella terra della mia afflizione ».
53 Then the seven years of plenty that there had been in Egypt came to an end,	53 Passati poi i sette anni d'abbondanza in Egitto,
54 and the seven years of famine set in, as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in every country,but throughout Egypt there was food.	54 cominciarono a venire i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe; e la fame si fece sentire in tutto il mondo, mentre nella terra d'Egitto c'era del pane.
55 But when al Egypt too began to feel the famine and the people appealed to Pharaoh for food,Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, 'Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.'	55 E quando anche l'Egitto sentì la fame, il popolo si raccomandò a Faraone per avere da mangiare. E Faraone rispose: «Andate da Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello che vi dirà ».
56 There was famine all over the world. Then Joseph opened al the granaries and rationed out grain tothe Egyptians, as the famine grew even worse in Egypt.	56 Or la fame cresceva ogni giorno su tutta la terra, e Giuseppe, aperti tutti i granai, vendè agli Egiziani, chè erano anch'essi tormentati dalla fame.
57 People came to Egypt from al over the world to get supplies from Joseph, for the famine had grownsevere throughout the world.	57 E da tutte le parti venivano in Egitto a comprar da mangiare per trovar sollievo al male della carestia.
