1 Two years later it happened that Pharaoh had a dream: there he was, standing by the Nile,	1 Deux ans plus tard, le Pharaon eut également un rêve. Il se trouvait sur les bords du Nil
2 and there, coming up from the Nile, were seven cows, sleek and fat, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.	2 et il voyait monter du Nil sept vaches de belle apparence, bien grasses, qui paissaient au milieu des roseaux.
3 And then seven other cows, wretched and lean, came up from the Nile, behind them; and these wentover and stood beside the other cows on the bank of the Nile.	3 Mais bientôt sept autres vaches montèrent du Nil: elles étaient laides et très maigres. Elles se rangèrent à côté des premières, sur la rive du Nil,
4 The wretched and lean cows ate the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.	4 et ces vaches laides et très maigres mangèrent les sept vaches de belle apparence et bien grasses. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla.
5 He fel asleep and dreamed a second time: there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, fulland ripe.	5 Il se rendormit et eut un second rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient lourds et bons.
6 And then sprouting up, behind them, came seven ears of grain, meagre and scorched by the eastwind.	6 Mais bientôt, sept épis maigres et roussis par le vent d’est poussèrent à côté d’eux,
7 The scanty ears of grain swal owed the seven ful and ripe ears of grain. Then Pharaoh woke up; ithad been a dream.	7 et ces épis maigres dévorèrent les sept épis lourds et pleins. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla et se rendit compte que c’était un rêve.
8 In the morning Pharaoh, feeling disturbed, had all the magicians and wise men of Egypt summoned tohim. Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret it for Pharaoh.	8 À son réveil, le matin suivant, le Pharaon avait l’esprit troublé. Il convoqua donc tous les magiciens d’Égypte et tous les sages. Pharaon leur raconta les songes qu’il avait eus, mais personne ne pouvait lui en donner la signification.
9 Then the chief cup-bearer addressed Pharaoh, 'Today, I recal having been at fault.	9 Alors le chef du service des boissons parla à Pharaon: “Je vais aujourd’hui rappeler ma faute!
10 When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, he put myself and the chief baker in custody in thehouse of the commander of the guard.	10 Le Pharaon s’était mis en colère contre ses serviteurs, et il m’avait enfermé dans la maison du chef des gardes, moi et le chef du service des pains.
11 We had a dream on the same night, he and I, and each man's dream had a meaning for himself.	11 Or dans la même nuit nous avons eu un rêve, lui et moi, et les deux rêves demandaient une interprétation.
12 There was a young Hebrew with us, one of the slaves belonging to the commander of the guard. Wetold our dreams to him and he interpreted them for us, tel ing each of us what his dream meant.	12 Il y avait avec nous un jeune Hébreu, serviteur du chef des gardes, et quand nous lui avons raconté nos rêves, il nous les a expliqués, donnant à chacun la signification du songe qu’il avait eu.
13 It turned out exactly according to his interpretation: I was restored to my position, but the other manwas hanged.'	13 Et tout est arrivé comme il nous l’avait dit: j’ai été rétabli à mon poste, et l’autre a été pendu.”
14 Then Pharaoh had Joseph summoned, and they hurried him from the dungeon. He shaved andchanged his clothes, and presented himself before Pharaoh.	14 Pharaon envoya donc chercher Joseph. Vite, on le sortit de la prison; on le rasa et il changea de vêtements pour se présenter devant le Pharaon.
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard itsaid of you that you can interpret a dream the instant you hear it.'	15 Le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “J’ai eu un rêve et il n’y a personne pour me l’expliquer. Mais j’ai entendu dire que lorsqu’on te raconte un rêve, tu en donnes la signification.”
16 'Not I,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, 'God wil give Pharaoh a favourable answer.'	16 Joseph répondit au Pharaon: “Ce n’est pas moi, c’est Dieu qui donnera la bonne réponse au Pharaon.”
17 So Pharaoh told Joseph, 'In my dream there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile.	17 Le Pharaon raconta donc le songe à Joseph: “Je me tenais au bord du Nil,
18 And there were seven cows, fat and sleek, coming up out of the Nile, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.	18 et voici que du Nil montaient sept vaches bien grasses et de belle apparence, qui se mirent à paître au milieu des roseaux.
19 And then seven other cows came up, behind them, starved, very wretched and lean; I have neverseen such poor cows in all Egypt.	19 Mais aussitôt derrière elles montèrent sept autres vaches malades, affreuses à voir, et si maigres que je n’en ai jamais vu de si laides dans toute l’Égypte.
20 The lean and wretched cows ate up the first seven fat cows.	20 Les vaches maigres et laides mangèrent les sept premières vaches, celles qui étaient bien grasses.
21 But when they had eaten them up, it was impossible to tel they had eaten them, for they looked aswretched as ever. Then I woke up.	21 Mais quand elles les eurent avalées, on pouvait se demander où elles les avaient mises, car elles étaient toujours aussi laides qu’auparavant. C’est alors que je me suis réveillé.
22 And then again in my dream, there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, beautiful y ripe;	22 “Et puis j’ai eu un autre rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient remplis et beaux,
23 but then sprouting up behind them came seven ears of grain, withered, meagre and scorched by theeast wind.	23 mais bientôt, sept épis secs, maigres, brûlés par le vent d’est, poussèrent à côté d’eux.
24 Then the shrivel ed ears of grain swal owed the seven ripe ears of grain. I have told the magicians,but no one has given me the answer.'	24 Alors les épis maigres avalèrent les sept bons épis. J’en ai parlé aux magiciens, mais personne n’a pu me donner d’explication.”
25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'Pharaoh's dreams are one and the same: God has revealed to Pharaohwhat he is going to do.	25 Joseph dit au Pharaon: “Les deux songes du Pharaon ne font qu’un. Dieu a révélé au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.
26 The seven fine cows are seven years and the seven ripe ears of grain are seven years; it is one andthe same dream.	26 Les sept bonnes vaches sont sept années, et les sept bons épis sont sept années: c’est le même songe.
27 The seven gaunt and lean cows coming up behind them are seven years, as are the seven shrivel edears of grain scorched by the east wind: there wil be seven years of famine.	27 Les sept vaches maigres et laides qui montaient derrière elles sont encore sept années, comme les sept épis vides, brûlés par le vent d’est: ce sont les sept mêmes années de famine.
28 It is as I have told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is going to do.	28 C’est ce que j’ai dit au Pharaon: Dieu a fait connaître au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.
29 Seven years are coming, bringing great plenty to the whole of Egypt,	29 Voici qu’arrivent pour l’Égypte sept années de grande abondance,
30 but seven years of famine will fol ow them, when al the plenty in Egypt wil be forgotten, and faminewil exhaust the land.	30 mais après elles viendront sept années de famine. L’Égypte oubliera le temps de l’abondance, car la famine dévorera le pays.
31 The famine that is to fol ow wil be so very severe that no one wil remember what plenty the countryused to enjoy.	31 On ne se souviendra plus de l’abondance dans le pays, tant sera grande la famine qui suivra.
32 The reason why Pharaoh had the same dream twice is that the event is already determined by God,and God wil shortly bring it about.	32 “Si le songe a été par deux fois répété au Pharaon, c’est que la chose est bien décidée de la part de Dieu, et que Dieu va se dépêcher de l’accomplir.
33 'Pharaoh should now find someone intel igent and wise to govern Egypt.	33 Aussi, dès maintenant, il faut que Pharaon choisisse un homme intelligent et sage pour gouverner toute l’Égypte.
34 Pharaoh should take action and appoint supervisors for the country, and impose a tax of one-fifth onEgypt during the seven years of plenty.	34 Le Pharaon établira des fonctionnaires sur tout le pays de façon à prélever le cinquième des récoltes d’Égypte pendant les années d’abondance.
35 They wil col ect al the food produced during these good years that are coming, and store the grainunder Pharaoh's authority, putting it in the towns and keeping it.	35 Les fonctionnaires ramasseront toute la nourriture de ces bonnes années qui viennent et, sous l’autorité du Pharaon, ils feront des réserves de blé dans les villes et les garderont.
36 This food wil form a reserve for the country against the seven years of famine which are coming onEgypt, so that the country wil not be destroyed by the famine.'	36 Il y aura ainsi de la nourriture en réserve dans le pays, en vue des sept années de famine qui viendront en Égypte, et le pays ne sera pas ruiné par la famine.”
37 Pharaoh and all his ministers approved of what he had said.	37 Ce discours plut au Pharaon et à tous ses serviteurs.
38 Then Pharaoh asked his ministers, 'Can we find anyone else endowed with the spirit of God, likehim?'	38 Le Pharaon se tourna vers ses serviteurs et leur dit: “Trouverons-nous un homme qui ait comme lui l’esprit de Dieu?”
39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has given you knowledge of al this, there can be no one asintelligent and wise as you.	39 Puis le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “Après que Dieu t’a révélé tout cela, il n’y a sûrement personne d’aussi intelligent et capable que toi.
40 You shall be my chancel or, and al my people shall respect your orders; only this throne shal set meabove you.'	40 C’est donc toi qui seras à la tête de ma maison, et tout le peuple sera soumis à tes ordres. Seul le trône me fera plus grand que toi.”
41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I hereby make you governor of the whole of Egypt.'	41 Le Pharaon dit encore à Joseph: “Regarde, je t’ai donné autorité sur tout le pays d’Égypte.”
42 Pharaoh took the ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's. He dressed him in robes of fine linen andput a gold chain round his neck.	42 Alors le Pharaon enleva son anneau pour le passer au doigt de Joseph, il le revêtit d’habits de lin fin et mit un collier d’or à son cou.
43 He made him ride in the best chariot he had after his own, and they shouted 'Abrek!' ahead of him.Thus he became governor of the whole of Egypt.	43 Il le fit monter sur le second de ses chars, et l’on criait devant lui: “Prosternez-vous!” Ce qui revenait à le mettre au-dessus de toute l’Égypte.
44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Although I am Pharaoh, no one is to move hand or foot without yourpermission throughout Egypt.'	44 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Je suis le Pharaon: sans ton ordre, personne ne lèvera la main ou le pied dans tout le pays d’Égypte!”
45 Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-Paneah, and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest ofOn, to be his wife. And Joseph began to journey al over Egypt.	45 Le Pharaon donna à Joseph le nom de Sofnat-Panéah, et il lui donna pour femme Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On.
46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. After leavingPharaoh's presence, Joseph travel ed throughout the length and breadth of Egypt.	46 Joseph avait 30 ans quand il se présenta devant Pharaon, le roi d’Égypte. Joseph se retira de devant le Pharaon et commença à parcourir tout le pays d’Égypte.
47 During the seven years of plenty, the soil yielded generously.	47 Pendant les sept années d’abondance, la terre produisit en quantité.
48 He col ected al the food of the seven years while there was an abundance in Egypt, and stored thefood in the towns, placing in each the food from the surrounding countryside.	48 Il rassembla donc toute la nourriture de ces sept années où l’abondance régnait en Égypte, et la mit en réserve dans les villes. Il rassembla à l’intérieur des villes la nourriture qui venait de la campagne.
49 Joseph gathered in grain like the sand of the sea, in such quantity that he gave up keeping count,since it was past accounting.	49 Ainsi Joseph entassa une quantité de blé impossible à compter, comme le sable de la mer: oui c’était vraiment sans mesure!
50 Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph: Asenath daughter of Potiphera,priest of On, bore him these.	50 Avant l’arrivée de la famine, Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On, donna à Joseph deux fils.
51 Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me completely forget myhardships and my father's House.'	51 Joseph appela l’aîné Manassé, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait oublier toute ma peine et la maison de mon père.”
52 He named the second Ephraim, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me fruitful in the country of mymisfortune.'	52 Et le second, il l’appela Éphraïm, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait grandir dans le pays de ma misère.”
53 Then the seven years of plenty that there had been in Egypt came to an end,	53 Après les sept années d’abondance du pays d’Égypte,
54 and the seven years of famine set in, as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in every country,but throughout Egypt there was food.	54 arrivèrent les sept années de famine, comme l’avait annoncé Joseph. C’était la famine dans tous les pays, mais en Égypte il y avait du pain.
55 But when al Egypt too began to feel the famine and the people appealed to Pharaoh for food,Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, 'Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.'	55 Puis l’Égypte à son tour connut la faim et le peuple fit appel au Pharaon pour avoir du pain. Le Pharaon dit à toute l’Égypte: “Allez trouver Joseph, et faites ce qu’il vous dira.”
56 There was famine all over the world. Then Joseph opened al the granaries and rationed out grain tothe Egyptians, as the famine grew even worse in Egypt.	56 La famine s’aggravait dans tout le pays. Alors Joseph ouvrit les réserves et vendit du blé à l’Égypte au fur et à mesure que la famine s’y installait.
57 People came to Egypt from al over the world to get supplies from Joseph, for the famine had grownsevere throughout the world.	57 De tous les pays on venait aussi en Égypte pour acheter du blé à Joseph, car la famine était grande sur toute la terre.
