1 Abraham left there for the region of the Negeb, and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While stayingin Gerar,	1 E Abramo partì di là per la contrada del mezzodì, e abitò fra Cades e Sur, e dimorò come pellegrino in Gerara.
2 Abraham said of his wife Sarah, 'She is my sister,' and Abimelech the king of Gerar had Sarahbrought to him.	2 Riguardo poi a Sara sua moglie, disse: « E mia sorella ». E allora Abimelec re di Gerara mandò a rapirla.
3 But God visited Abimelech in a dream one night. 'You are to die,' he told him, 'because of the womanyou have taken, for she is a married woman.'	3 Ma Dio apparve una notte in sogno ad Abimelec, e gli disse: « Ecco, tu morrai a motivo della donna che tu hai rapita, perchè ha marito ».
4 Abimelech, however, had not gone near her; so he said, 'Lord, would you kil someone even if he isupright?	4 E Abimelec, che non l'aveva toccata, disse: «Signore, farai perire la gente inconsapevole e giusta?
5 Did he not tel me himself, "She is my sister"? And she herself said, "He is my brother." I did this with a clear conscience and clean hands.'	5 Non m'ha egli detto: « È mia sorella », e lei stessa non ha detto: « È mio fratello » Io ho fatto questo nella semplicità del mio cuore e con mani innocenti ».
6 'Yes, I know,' God replied in the dream, 'that you did this with a clear conscience and I myselfprevented you from sinning against me. That was why I did not let you touch her.	6 E il Signore gli disse: « Lo so anch'io che tu l'hai fatto nella semplicità del tuo cuore, e t'ho quindi preservato dal peccare contro di me, e non t'ho permesso di toccarla.
7 Now send the man's wife back; for he is a prophet and can intercede on your behalf for your life. Butunderstand that if you do not send her back, this means death for you and al yours.'	7 Or dunque restituisci la moglie al suo marito, il quale è profeta, pregherà per te e vivrai; ma se non la vuoi restituire, sappi che morrai indubbiamente, tu e tutto quello che ti appartiene ».
8 Early next morning, Abimelech summoned his ful court and told them the whole story, at which thepeople were very much afraid.	8 E Abimelec subito si alzò, mentre era ancor notte, chiamò tutti i suoi servi e raccontò loro tutte queste cose, e tutti ne ebbero grande paura.
9 Then summoning Abraham, Abimelech said to him, 'What have you done to us? What wrong have Idone you, for you to bring such guilt on me and on my kingdom? You had no right to treat me like this.'	9 Poi Abimelec chiamò anche Abramo, e gli disse: « Che ci hai fatto! E che male ti abbiamo fatto noi da tirare addosso a me e al mio regno un peccato sì grande! Ci hai fatto cose che non dovevi fare ».
10 Abimelech then said to Abraham, 'What possessed you to do such a thing?'	10 Poi, di nuovo rammaricandosi, disse: «A che miravi, facendo questo! »
11 'Because', Abraham replied, 'I thought there would be no fear of God here and that I should be kil edfor the sake of my wife.	11 Abramo rispose: « Io pensai e dissi dentro di me: Forse non v'è timor di Dio in questo luogo, e mi uccideranno a causa della mia moglie.
12 Anyway, she real y is my sister, my father's daughter though not my mother's, besides being my wife.	12 D'altra parte essa è proprio anche mia sorella, figlia di mio padre e non di mia madre, ed io la presi per moglie.
13 So when God made me wander far from my father's home I said to her, "There is an act of love youcan do me: everywhere we go, say of me that I am your brother." '	13 Or quando Dio mi fece emigrare dalla casa di mio padre, io le dissi: « Tu mi farai questo piacere: di dire, dovunque andremo, che io sono tuo fratello ».
14 Abimelech took sheep, cattle, men and women slaves, and presented them to Abraham, and gavehim back his wife Sarah.	14 Allora Abimelec prese pecore, e buoi, servi e serve, e li diede ad Abramo, e gli restituì Sara sua moglie,
15 And Abimelech said, 'Look, my land is open to you. Settle wherever you please.'	15 e gli disse: « Questa terra è davanti a te: dimora dove ti piacerà ».
16 To Sarah he said, 'Look, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. This wil al aysuspicions about you, as far as al the people round you are concerned; you have been completely vindicated.'	16 A Sara poi disse: « Ecco, io ho dato a tuo fratello mille monete d'argento, che ti serviran di velo agli occhi dinanzi a tutti coloro che son teco, e dovunque andrai: ricordati però che sei stata presa ».
17 Abraham then interceded with God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave-girls, so thatthey could have children,	17 Alla preghiera di Abramo, Dio risanò Abimelec, la sua moglie e le sue serve, ed esse partorirono.
18 for Yahweh had made al the women of Abimelech's household barren on account of Sarah,Abraham's wife.	18 Il Signore, infatti, aveva rese sterili tutte le donne della casa di Abimelec, a motivo di Sara moglie di Abramo.
