Genesis 20

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Abraham left there for the region of the Negeb, and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While stayingin Gerar,	1 Abramo levò le tende di là, dirigendosi verso la terra del Negheb; e dimorò tra Kades e Sur, poi prese residenza come straniero a Gerar.
2 Abraham said of his wife Sarah, 'She is my sister,' and Abimelech the king of Gerar had Sarahbrought to him.	2 Ora Abramo disse di Sara, sua moglie: "E' mia sorella!", onde Abimèlech, re di Gerar, mandò a prendere Sara.
3 But God visited Abimelech in a dream one night. 'You are to die,' he told him, 'because of the womanyou have taken, for she is a married woman.'	3 Ma Dio venne da Abimèlech, nel sogno della notte, e gli disse: "Ecco che stai per morire, a causa della donna che hai preso, mentr'ella è sottoposta a un marito".
4 Abimelech, however, had not gone near her; so he said, 'Lord, would you kil someone even if he isupright?	4 Abimèlech non si era ancora accostato a lei. Disse: "Mio Signore, vuoi far morire gente che è giusta?
5 Did he not tel me himself, "She is my sister"? And she herself said, "He is my brother." I did this with a clear conscience and clean hands.'	5 Non fu forse lui a dirmi: "E' mia sorella"? E lei stessa ha detto: "E' mio fratello!". Con la semplicità del mio cuore e con l'innocenza delle mie mani ho fatto questo!".
6 'Yes, I know,' God replied in the dream, 'that you did this with a clear conscience and I myselfprevented you from sinning against me. That was why I did not let you touch her.	6 Gli rispose Dio nel sogno: "Anch'io so che con la semplicità del tuo cuore hai fatto questo e fui ancora io a preservarti dal peccato contro di me; perciò non ho permesso che tu la toccassi.
7 Now send the man's wife back; for he is a prophet and can intercede on your behalf for your life. Butunderstand that if you do not send her back, this means death for you and al yours.'	7 Ora restituisci la moglie di quest'uomo: egli è un profeta e pregherà per te, sicché tu conservi la vita. Ma se tu non la vuoi restituire, sappi che dovrai certamente morire con tutti i tuoi".
8 Early next morning, Abimelech summoned his ful court and told them the whole story, at which thepeople were very much afraid.	8 Allora Abimèlech si alzò di mattina presto e chiamò tutti i suoi servi, davanti ai quali riferì tutte queste cose, e quegli uomini si impaurirono assai.
9 Then summoning Abraham, Abimelech said to him, 'What have you done to us? What wrong have Idone you, for you to bring such guilt on me and on my kingdom? You had no right to treat me like this.'	9 Poi chiamò Abramo e gli disse: "Che cosa ci hai fatto? Che colpa ho io commesso contro di te, perché tu abbia attirato su di me e sul mio regno un peccato tanto grande? Cose che non si devono fare tu hai fatto a mio riguardo!".
10 Abimelech then said to Abraham, 'What possessed you to do such a thing?'	10 Poi Abimèlech disse ad Abramo: "Che cosa pensavi di fare agendo in tal modo?".
11 'Because', Abraham replied, 'I thought there would be no fear of God here and that I should be kil edfor the sake of my wife.	11 Rispose Abramo: "Io mi sono detto: forse non c'è timore di Dio in questo luogo, sicché mi uccideranno per causa di mia moglie.
12 Anyway, she real y is my sister, my father's daughter though not my mother's, besides being my wife.	12 Inoltre essa è veramente mia sorella, figlia di mio padre ma non figlia di mia madre, ed è divenuta mia moglie.
13 So when God made me wander far from my father's home I said to her, "There is an act of love youcan do me: everywhere we go, say of me that I am your brother." '	13 Or avvenne che, quando Dio mi fece errare lungi dalla casa di mio padre, io le dissi: Questo è il favore che tu mi farai: in ogni luogo dove noi arriveremo devi dire di me: E' mio fratello!".
14 Abimelech took sheep, cattle, men and women slaves, and presented them to Abraham, and gavehim back his wife Sarah.	14 Allora Abimèlech prese greggi e armenti, schiavi e schiave e li diede ad Abramo e gli restituì la moglie Sara.
15 And Abimelech said, 'Look, my land is open to you. Settle wherever you please.'	15 Poi Abimèlech disse: "Ecco davanti a te il mio territorio: dimora dove ti piace!".
16 To Sarah he said, 'Look, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. This wil al aysuspicions about you, as far as al the people round you are concerned; you have been completely vindicated.'	16 E a Sara disse: "Ecco, io do mille pezzi d'argento a tuo fratello; questo sarà per te come risarcimento agli occhi di tutti quelli che sono con te... Così tu sei in tutto riabilitata".
17 Abraham then interceded with God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave-girls, so thatthey could have children,	17 Abramo pregò Dio, ed egli guarì Abimèlech, sua moglie e le sue ancelle, sì che poterono ancora generare.
18 for Yahweh had made al the women of Abimelech's household barren on account of Sarah,Abraham's wife.	18 Poiché il Signore aveva reso del tutto sterile ogni matrimonio della casa di Abimèlech, per il fatto di Sara, moglie di Abramo.
