NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Abraham left there for the region of the Negeb, and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While stayingin Gerar,1 Profectus inde Abraham in terram Nageb, habitavit in ter Cades et Sur et peregrinatus est in Geraris.
Abraham said of his wife Sarah, 'She is my sister,' and Abimelech the king of Gerar had Sarahbrought to him.2 Dixitque de Sara uxore sua: “Soror mea est”. Misit ergo Abimelech rex Gerarae et tulit eam.
But God visited Abimelech in a dream one night. 'You are to die,' he told him, 'because of the womanyou have taken, for she is a married woman.'3 Venit autem Deus ad Abimelech per somnium nocte et ait illi: “En morieris propter mulierem, quam tulisti; habet enim virum”.
Abimelech, however, had not gone near her; so he said, 'Lord, would you kil someone even if he isupright?4 Abimelech vero non tetigerat eam. Et ait: “Domine, num gentem etiam iustam interficies?
Did he not tel me himself, "She is my sister"? And she herself said, "He is my brother." I did this with a clear conscience and clean hands.'5 Nonne ipse dixit mihi: "Soror mea est", et ipsa quoque ait: "Frater meus est"? In simplicitate cordis mei et munditia manuum mearum feci hoc”.
'Yes, I know,' God replied in the dream, 'that you did this with a clear conscience and I myselfprevented you from sinning against me. That was why I did not let you touch her.6 Dixitque ad eum Deus per somnium: “Et ego scio quod simplici corde feceris; et ideo custodivi te, ne peccares in me, et non dimisi, ut tangeres eam.
Now send the man's wife back; for he is a prophet and can intercede on your behalf for your life. Butunderstand that if you do not send her back, this means death for you and al yours.'7 Nunc igitur redde viro suo uxorem, quia propheta est; et orabit pro te, et vives. Si autem nolueris reddere, scito quod morte morieris tu et omnia, quae tua sunt”.
Early next morning, Abimelech summoned his ful court and told them the whole story, at which thepeople were very much afraid.8 Statimque de nocte consurgens Abimelech vocavit omnes servos suos et locutus est universa verba haec in auribus eorum; timueruntque viri valde.
Then summoning Abraham, Abimelech said to him, 'What have you done to us? What wrong have Idone you, for you to bring such guilt on me and on my kingdom? You had no right to treat me like this.'9 Vocavit autem Abimelech etiam Abraham et dixit ei: “Quid fecisti nobis? Quid peccavi in te, quia induxisti super me et super regnum meum peccatum grande? Quae non debuisti facere, fecisti mihi”.
Abimelech then said to Abraham, 'What possessed you to do such a thing?'10 Rursusque ait: “Quid vidisti, ut hoc faceres?”.
'Because', Abraham replied, 'I thought there would be no fear of God here and that I should be kil edfor the sake of my wife.11 Respondit Abraham: “ Cogitavi mecum: Certe non est timor Dei in loco isto, et interficient me propter uxorem meam.
Anyway, she real y is my sister, my father's daughter though not my mother's, besides being my wife.12 Alias autem et vere soror mea est, filia patris mei et non filia matris meae, et duxi eam in uxorem.
So when God made me wander far from my father's home I said to her, "There is an act of love youcan do me: everywhere we go, say of me that I am your brother." '13 Cum autem vagari me faceret Deus de domo patris mei, dixi ad eam: Hanc misericordiam facies mecum: in omni loco, ad quem ingrediemur, dices quod frater tuus sim ”.
Abimelech took sheep, cattle, men and women slaves, and presented them to Abraham, and gavehim back his wife Sarah.14 Tulit igitur Abimelech oves et boves et servos et ancillas et dedit Abraham; reddiditque illi Saram uxorem suam
And Abimelech said, 'Look, my land is open to you. Settle wherever you please.'15 et ait: “Ecce terra mea coram te; ubicumque tibi placuerit, habita”.
To Sarah he said, 'Look, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. This wil al aysuspicions about you, as far as al the people round you are concerned; you have been completely vindicated.'16 Sarae autem dixit: “Ecce mille argenteos dedi fratri tuo; ecce hoc erit tibi in velamen oculorum ad omnes, qui tecum sunt, et apud omnes iustificaberis”.
Abraham then interceded with God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave-girls, so thatthey could have children,17 Orante autem Abraham, sanavit Deus Abimelech et uxorem ancillasque eius et pepererunt;
for Yahweh had made al the women of Abimelech's household barren on account of Sarah,Abraham's wife.18 concluserat enim Dominus omnem vulvam domus Abimelech propter Saram uxorem Abraham.
