Genesis 12

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Yahweh said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for a country whichI shal show you;	1 Yahveh dijo a Abram: «Vete de tu tierra, y de tu patria, y de la casa de tu padre, a la tierra que yo te mostraré.
2 and I shal make you a great nation, I shal bless you and make your name famous; you are to be ablessing!	2 De ti haré una nación grande y te bendeciré. Engrandeceré tu nombre; y sé tú una bendición.
3 I shal bless those who bless you, and shal curse those who curse you, and al clans on earth willbless themselves by you.'	3 Bendeciré a quienes te bendigan y maldeciré a quienes te maldigan. Por ti se bendecirán todos los linajes de la tierra.»
4 So Abram went as Yahweh told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old whenhe left Haran.	4 Marchó, pues, Abram, como se lo había dicho Yahveh, y con él marchó Lot. Tenía Abram 75 años cuando salió de Jarán.
5 Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had amassed and the people theyhad acquired in Haran. They set off for the land of Canaan, and arrived there.	5 Tomó Abram a Saray, su mujer, y a Lot, hijo de su hermano, con toda la hacienda que habían logrado, y el personal que habían adquirido en Jarán, y salieron para dirigirse a Canaán. Llegaron a Canaán,
6 Abram passed through the country as far as the holy place at Shechem, the Oak of Moreh. TheCanaanites were in the country at the time.	6 y Abram atravesó el país hasta el lugar sagrado de Siquem, hasta la encina de Moré. Por entonces estaban los cananeos en el país.
7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, 'I shal give this country to your progeny.' And there, Abrambuilt an altar to Yahweh who had appeared to him.	7 Yahveh se apareció a Abram y le dijo: «A tu descendencia he de dar esta tierra.» Entonces él edificó allí un altar a Yahveh que se le había aparecido.
8 From there he moved on to the mountainous district east of Bethel, where he pitched his tent, withBethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and invoked the name of Yahweh.	8 De allí pasó a la montaña, al oriente de Betel, y desplegó su tienda, entre Betel al occidente y Ay al oriente. Allí edificó un altar a Yahveh e invocó su nombre.
9 Then Abram made his way stage by stage to the Negeb.	9 Luego Abram fue desplazándose por acampadas hacia el Négueb.
10 There was a famine in the country, and Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a time, since thefamine in the country was severe.	10 Hubo hambre en el país, y Abram bajó a Egipto a pasar allí una temporada, pues el hambre abrumaba al país.
11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, 'Look, I know you are a beautifulwoman.	11 Estando ya próximo a entrar en Egipto, dijo a su mujer Saray: «Mira, yo sé que eres mujer hermosa.
12 When the Egyptians see you they wil say, "That is his wife," and they wil kil me but leave you alive.	12 En cuanto te vean los egipcios, dirán: “Es su mujer”, y me matarán a mí, y a ti te dejarán viva.
13 Therefore please tell them you are my sister, so that they may treat me wel because of you andspare my life out of regard for you.'	13 Di, por favor, que eres mi hermana, a fin de que me vaya bien por causa tuya, y viva yo en gracia a ti.»
14 When Abram arrived in Egypt the Egyptians did indeed see that the woman was very beautiful.	14 Efectivamente cuando Abram entró en Egipto, vieron los egipcios que la mujer era muy hermosa.
15 When Pharaoh's officials saw her they sang her praises to Pharaoh and the woman was taken intoPharaoh's household.	15 Viéronla los oficiales de Faraón, los cuales se la ponderaron, y la mujer fue llevada al palacio de Faraón.
16 And Abram was very well treated because of her and received flocks, oxen, donkeys, men andwomen slaves, she-donkeys and camels.	16 Este trató bien por causa de ella a Abram, que tuvo ovejas, vacas, asnos, siervos, siervas, asnas y camellos.
17 But Yahweh inflicted severe plagues on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai.	17 Pero Yahveh hirió a Faraón y a su casa con grandes plagas por lo de Saray, la mujer de Abram.
18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, 'What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell meshe was your wife?	18 Entonces Faraón llamó a Abram, y le dijo: «¿Qué es lo que has hecho conmigo? ¿Por qué no me avisaste de que era tu mujer?
