NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
Symeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of equal value to ours through the righteousness of our God and savior Jesus Christ:1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
may grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.
His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power.3 By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.
Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divinenature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.4 Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge,5 With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,
knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion,6 understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,
devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.7 devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.
If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.8 The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.
Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins.9 But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.
Therefore, brothers, be all the more eager to make your calland election firm, for, in doing so, you will never stumble.10 Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,
For, in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.11 for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.
Therefore, I will always remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth you have.12 That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.
I think it right, as long as I am in this "tent," to stir you up by a reminder,13 I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,
since I know that I will soon have to put it aside, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.14 since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.
I shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember these things after my departure.15 And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.16 When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.
For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."17 He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.
We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.
Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation,20 At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.
for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.
