Joshua 20

1 The LORD said to Joshua:	1 Il Signore disse a Giosuè:
2 "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of which I spoke to them through Moses,	2 «Di’ agli Israeliti: Sceglietevi le città di asilo, come vi avevo ordinato per mezzo di Mosè,
3 to which one guilty of accidental and unintended homicide may flee for asylum from the avenger of blood.	3 perché l’omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno per errore o per inavvertenza, vi si possa rifugiare. Vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vendicatore del sangue.
4 To one of these cities the killer shall flee, and standing at the entrance of the city gate, he shall plead his case before the elders, who must receive him and assign him a place in which to live among them.	4 Se qualcuno cerca asilo in una di queste città, fermatosi all’ingresso della porta della città, esporrà il suo caso agli anziani di quella città. Se costoro lo accoglieranno presso di sé dentro la città, gli assegneranno una dimora ed egli si stabilirà in mezzo a loro.
5 Though the avenger of blood pursues him, they are not to deliver up the homicide who slew his fellow man unintentionally and not out of previous hatred.	5 Se il vendicatore del sangue lo insegue, essi non abbandoneranno nelle sue mani l’omicida, perché ha ucciso il prossimo per inavvertenza e senza averlo prima odiato.
6 Once he has stood judgment before the community, he shall live on in that city till the death of the high priest who is in office at the time. Then the killer may go back home to his own city from which he fled."	6 L’omicida abiterà in quella città finché comparirà in giudizio davanti alla comunità. Alla morte del sommo sacerdote in carica in quel tempo, l’omicida potrà tornarsene e rientrare nella sua città e nella sua casa, nella città da dove era fuggito».
7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the mountain region of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountain region of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the mountain region of Judah.	7 Allora consacrarono Kedes in Galilea sulle montagne di Nèftali, Sichem sulle montagne di Èfraim e Kiriat-Arbà, ossia Ebron, sulle montagne di Giuda.
8 And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho they designated Bezer on the open tableland in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.	8 Oltre il Giordano, a oriente di Gerico, stabilirono Beser, sull’altopiano desertico, nella tribù di Ruben, Ramot in Gàlaad, nella tribù di Gad, e Golan in Basan, nella tribù di Manasse.
9 These were the designated cities to which any Israelite or stranger living among them who had killed a person accidentally might flee to escape death at the hand of the avenger of blood, until he could appear before the community.	9 Queste furono le città stabilite per tutti gli Israeliti e per lo straniero dimorante in mezzo a loro, perché chiunque avesse ucciso qualcuno per errore potesse rifugiarvisi e non morisse per mano del vendicatore del sangue, prima d’essere comparso davanti alla comunità.
