Joshua 20

1 The LORD said to Joshua:	1 Poi il Signore disse a Giosuè:
2 "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of which I spoke to them through Moses,	2 "Parla agli Israeliti e di' loro: Stabilitevi le città di rifugio, delle quali vi ho parlato per mezzo di Mosè,
3 to which one guilty of accidental and unintended homicide may flee for asylum from the avenger of blood.	3 perché l'omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno per errore o per inavvertenza, vi si possa rifugiare; vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vendicatore del sangue.
4 To one of these cities the killer shall flee, and standing at the entrance of the city gate, he shall plead his case before the elders, who must receive him and assign him a place in which to live among them.	4 L'omicida fuggirà in una di quelle città e, fermatosi all'ingresso della porta della città, esporrà il suo caso agli anziani di quella città; questi lo accoglieranno presso di loro dentro la città, gli assegneranno una dimora ed egli si stabilirà in mezzo a loro.
5 Though the avenger of blood pursues him, they are not to deliver up the homicide who slew his fellow man unintentionally and not out of previous hatred.	5 Se il vendicatore del sangue lo inseguirà, essi non gli daranno nelle mani l'omicida, perché ha ucciso il prossimo senza averne l'intenzione, senza averlo prima odiato.
6 Once he has stood judgment before the community, he shall live on in that city till the death of the high priest who is in office at the time. Then the killer may go back home to his own city from which he fled."	6 L'omicida rimarrà in quella città finché, alla morte del sommo sacerdote, che sarà in funzione in quei giorni, comparirà in giudizio davanti all'assemblea. Allora l'omicida potrà tornarsene e rientrare nella sua città e nella sua casa, nella città da dove era fuggito".
7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the mountain region of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountain region of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the mountain region of Judah.	7 Consacrarono dunque Kades in Galilea sulle montagne di Nèftali, Sichem sulle montagne di Efraim e Kiriat-Arba, cioè Ebron sulle montagne di Giuda.
8 And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho they designated Bezer on the open tableland in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.	8 Oltre il Giordano, a oriente di Gèrico, stabilirono Bezer della tribù di Ruben, nel deserto, sull'altipiano; Ramot in Gàlaad nella tribù di Gad e Golan in Basan, nella tribù di Manàsse.
9 These were the designated cities to which any Israelite or stranger living among them who had killed a person accidentally might flee to escape death at the hand of the avenger of blood, until he could appear before the community.	9 Queste furono le città stabilite per tutti gli Israeliti e per lo straniero che abita in mezzo a loro, perché chiunque avesse ucciso qualcuno per inavvertenza, potesse rifugiarvisi e non morisse per mano del vendicatore del sangue, prima d'essere comparso davanti all'assemblea.
