1 The LORD said to Joshua:	1 Yahvé dit à Josué de répéter aux Israélites
2 "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of which I spoke to them through Moses,	2 ce qu’il avait fait dire à Moïse: “Donnez-vous des villes de refuge où pourra se réfugier
3 to which one guilty of accidental and unintended homicide may flee for asylum from the avenger of blood.	3 celui qui aura tué quelqu’un par erreur, involontairement. Elles lui serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.
4 To one of these cities the killer shall flee, and standing at the entrance of the city gate, he shall plead his case before the elders, who must receive him and assign him a place in which to live among them.	4 Celui qui voudra se réfugier dans l’une de ces villes se présentera à l’entrée de la porte de la ville. Là il exposera son cas aux anciens de la ville, et ceux-ci l’accueilleront auprès d’eux dans la ville et lui donneront une maison pour qu’il habite avec eux.
5 Though the avenger of blood pursues him, they are not to deliver up the homicide who slew his fellow man unintentionally and not out of previous hatred.	5 Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront point le meurtrier entre ses mains, car c’est involontairement qu’il a tué son prochain: il n’avait pas de haine pour lui auparavant.
6 Once he has stood judgment before the community, he shall live on in that city till the death of the high priest who is in office at the time. Then the killer may go back home to his own city from which he fled."	6 Le meurtrier restera dans la ville jusqu’à ce qu’il comparaisse devant la communauté pour être jugé, et jusqu’à ce que soit mort le Grand Prêtre en fonction ces jours-là. Alors le meurtrier pourra regagner sa maison dans la ville d’où il s’était enfui.”
7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the mountain region of Naphtali, Shechem in the mountain region of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the mountain region of Judah.	7 On consacra donc Qédesh en Galilée dans la montagne de Nephtali, Sichem dans la montagne d’Éphraïm et Kiryat-Arba, c’est-à-dire Hébron, dans la montagne de Juda.
8 And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho they designated Bezer on the open tableland in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.	8 Au-delà du Jourdain, à l’est de Jéricho, on avait désigné Béser dans le désert, sur le plateau, dans le territoire de Ruben; Ramot-en-Galaad, dans le territoire de Gad et Golan du Bashan, dans le territoire de Manassé.
9 These were the designated cities to which any Israelite or stranger living among them who had killed a person accidentally might flee to escape death at the hand of the avenger of blood, until he could appear before the community.	9 Ce sont là les villes de refuge pour les Israélites et pour les étrangers qui habitent au milieu d’eux. C’est là que se réfugie celui qui a tué quelqu’un involontairement, pour échapper à la main du vengeur du sang, jusqu’au moment où il comparaît devant la communauté.
