1 When Jabin, king of Hazor, learned of this, he sent a message to Jobab, king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,	1 Quando Jabin, re di Khazor, udì questi fatti, ne informò Jobab re di Madon, il re di Shimron, il re di Achshaf
2 and to the northern kings in the mountain regions and in the Arabah near Chinneroth, in the foothills, and in Naphath-dor to the west.	2 e i re che abitavano la montagna a nord e l’Araba a sud di Genezaret, la Shefela e le coste di Dor verso il mare:
3 These were Canaanites to the east and west, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites in the mountain regions, and Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.	3 il Cananeo che si trovava a oriente e a occidente, l’Amorreo, l’Hittita, il Ferezeo, il Gebuseo nella montagna e l’Hivveo alle falde dell’Hermon nel paese di Mizpa.
4 They came out with all their troops, an army numerous as the sands on the seashore, and with a multitude of horses and chariots.	4 Partirono essi e l’accampamento con loro, un popolo numeroso come la sabbia che è sulla spiaggia del mare e un numero immenso di carri e di cavalli.
5 All these kings joined forces and marched to the waters of Merom, where they encamped together to fight against Israel.	5 Tutti questi re si diedero convegno e andarono ad accamparsi presso le acque di Merom per combattere Israele.
6 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for by this time tomorrow I will stretch them slain before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."	6 Jahvè disse a Giosuè: «Non temerli, perché domani a quest’ora li metterò tutti trafitti innanzi a Israele; tu taglierai i garretti ai loro cavalli e darai fuoco ai loro carri».
7 Joshua with his whole army came upon them at the waters of Merom in a surprise attack.	7 Giosuè con tutta la gente di guerra marciò all'improvviso contro di loro presso le acque di Merom e piombò loro addosso.
8 The LORD delivered them into the power of the Israelites, who defeated them and pursued them to Greater Sidon, to Misrephoth-maim, and eastward to the valley of Mizpeh. They struck them all down, leaving no survivors.	8 Jahvè li mise nelle mani d’Israele che li sconfisse e li inseguì fino a Sidone la Grande e a Misrefot-Maim, verso oriente; ne fece tale strage da non lasciare un solo superstite.
9 Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.	9 Giosuè li trattò come Jahvè aveva ordinato, tagliò i garretti ai loro cavalli e bruciò i loro carri.
10 At that time Joshua, turning back, captured Hazor and slew its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the chief of all those kingdoms.	10 In quello stesso tempo, Giosuè tornò indietro e si impadronì di Khazor di cui colpì il re con la spada. Khazor era stata prima la capitale di tutti quei regni.
11 He also fulfilled the doom by putting every person there to the sword, till none was left alive. Hazor itself he burned.	11 Passò a fil di spada ogni vivente che vi si trovava, votandola all’anatema, né vi lasciò anima viva e Khazor fu data alle fiamme.
12 Joshua thus captured all those kings with their cities and put them to the sword, fulfilling the doom on them, as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded.	12 Giosuè prese anche tutte le città di quei re: passò tutti i loro re a fil di spada e li votò all’anatema come aveva comandato Mosè, servitore di Jahvè.
13 However, Israel did not destroy by fire any of the cities built on raised sites, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.	13 Ma Israele non bruciò tutte le città che restavano sui loro tell, eccetto Khazor, la sola che fu incendiata da Giosuè.
14 The Israelites took all the spoil and livestock of these cities as their booty; but the people they put to the sword, until they had exterminated the last of them, leaving none alive.	14 I figli di Israele saccheggiarono a loro profitto tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame, ma passarono tutte le persone a fil di spada, fino al totale sterminio, senza lasciare anima viva.
15 As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua acted accordingly. He left nothing undone that the LORD had commanded Moses should be done.	15 Giosuè eseguì ciò che Jahvè aveva comandato a Mosè suo servitore e ciò che Mosè aveva ordinato a Giosuè: non trascurò nulla di quanto Jahvè aveva comandato a Mosè.
16 So Joshua captured all this land: the mountain regions, the entire Negeb, all the land of Goshen, the foothills, the Arabah, as well as the mountain regions and foothills of Israel,	16 Giosuè prese dunque tutto il paese: la montagna, tutto il Negheb, tutta la terra di Goshen, la Shefela, l’Araba, il monte di Israele e la sua Shefela.
17 from Mount Halak that rises toward Seir as far as Baal-gad in the Lebanon valley at the foot of Mount Hermon. All their kings he captured and put to death.	17 Dal monte Khalak che sale verso Seir fino a Baal-Gad nella valle del Libano ai piedi del monte Hermon prese tutti i loro re, li colpì e li uccise.
18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time.	18 Molto tempo Giosuè combatté contro quei re.
19 With the exception of the Hivites who lived in Gibeon, no city made peace with the Israelites; all were taken in battle.	19 Nessuna città, meno gli Hivvei che abitavano a Gabaon, volle fare pace con i figli di Israele; questi allora le presero tutte con la guerra.
20 For it was the design of the LORD to encourage them to wage war against Israel, that they might be doomed to destruction and thus receive no mercy, but be exterminated, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	20 Questo era il disegno di Jahvè: rendere ostinato il loro cuore nel muovere guerra a Israele per votarle all’anatema senza pietà e sterminarle come Jahvè aveva comandato a Mosè.
21 At that time Joshua penetrated the mountain regions and exterminated the Anakim in Hebron, Debir, Anab, the entire mountain region of Judah, and the entire mountain region of Israel. Joshua fulfilled the doom on them and on their cities,	21 In quel tempo Giosuè andò a sterminare gli Anakiti dalla montagna, da Hebron, da Debir, da Anab; da tutta la montagna di Giuda e da tutta la montagna di Israele. Giosuè li votò con le loro città all’anatema.
22 so that no Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites. However, some survived in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.	22 Così nel territorio dei figli di Israele non rimasero più Anakiti, soltanto ne restarono a Gaza, a Gat e ad Ashdod.
23 Thus Joshua captured the whole country, just as the LORD had foretold to Moses. Joshua gave it to Israel as their heritage, apportioning it among the tribes. And the land enjoyed peace.	23 Giosuè occupò tutto il paese secondo quanto Jahvè aveva ordinato a Mosè. Giosuè lo diede in possesso a Israele, secondo le loro divisioni per tribù. Poi il paese riposò dalla guerra.
