1 When Jabin, king of Hazor, learned of this, he sent a message to Jobab, king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,	1 Quando ne ebbe notizia Iabin, re di Azor, mandò dei messi ad informare Iobab, re di Madon, il re di Simron, il re di Acsaf,
2 and to the northern kings in the mountain regions and in the Arabah near Chinneroth, in the foothills, and in Naphath-dor to the west.	2 e i re che erano a settentrione, sulle montagne, nell'Araba, a sud di Chinarot, nel bassopiano e sulle colline di Dor, verso il mare.
3 These were Canaanites to the east and west, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites in the mountain regions, and Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.	3 I Cananei si trovavano a oriente e ad occidente, e gli Amorrei, gli Hittiti, i Perizziti, i Gebusei sulle montagne, gli Evei ai piedi dell'Ermon, nella regione di Mizpa.
4 They came out with all their troops, an army numerous as the sands on the seashore, and with a multitude of horses and chariots.	4 Essi uscirono in campo con tutti i loro eserciti, una moltitudine ingente, come la sabbia che è sulla spiaggia del mare, con cavalli e carri in grande quantità.
5 All these kings joined forces and marched to the waters of Merom, where they encamped together to fight against Israel.	5 Datisi convegno, tutti questi re vennero ad accamparsi insieme presso le acque di Merom, per combattere contro Israele.
6 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for by this time tomorrow I will stretch them slain before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."	6 Ma il Signore rassicurò Giosuè: "Non aver timore di quelli, perché domani, alla stessa ora, io li mostrerò tutti uccisi davanti a Israele; farai tagliare i garretti ai loro cavalli e farai bruciare i loro carri".
7 Joshua with his whole army came upon them at the waters of Merom in a surprise attack.	7 Così Giosuè e con lui tutti quelli atti alla guerra piombarono all'improvviso su di loro presso le acque di Merom e li assalirono.
8 The LORD delivered them into the power of the Israelites, who defeated them and pursued them to Greater Sidon, to Misrephoth-maim, and eastward to the valley of Mizpeh. They struck them all down, leaving no survivors.	8 Il Signore li dette in mano d'Israele, che li batté e li inseguì fino a Sidone la Grande e sino a Misrefot-Maim e fino nella vallata di Mizpa verso oriente, facendone una strage tale da non lasciarne uno superstite.
9 Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.	9 Giosuè li trattò secondo quanto aveva detto il Signore, fece tagliare i garretti ai loro cavalli e fece bruciare i loro carri.
10 At that time Joshua, turning back, captured Hazor and slew its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the chief of all those kingdoms.	10 In quello stesso tempo Giosuè, voltandosi, prese Azor e uccise di spada il suo re, perché Azor era stata già la capitale di tutti quei regni.
11 He also fulfilled the doom by putting every person there to the sword, till none was left alive. Hazor itself he burned.	11 Passò a fil di spada tutti quelli che vi si trovavano, votandoli allo sterminio; non lasciò anima viva e fece dar fuoco ad Azor.
12 Joshua thus captured all those kings with their cities and put them to the sword, fulfilling the doom on them, as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded.	12 Giosuè prese tutte le città di quei re e tutti i loro re e li passò a fil di spada, votandoli allo sterminio, come aveva ordinato Mosè, servo del Signore.
13 However, Israel did not destroy by fire any of the cities built on raised sites, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.	13 Israele però non bruciò nessuna delle città che stavano sulle loro colline, ad eccezione di Azor, che Giosuè fece bruciare.
14 The Israelites took all the spoil and livestock of these cities as their booty; but the people they put to the sword, until they had exterminated the last of them, leaving none alive.	14 Tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame i figli d'Israele lo saccheggiarono per sé, ma passarono a fil di spada tutti gli uomini, fino a sterminarli tutti, senza lasciare anima viva.
15 As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua acted accordingly. He left nothing undone that the LORD had commanded Moses should be done.	15 Come aveva ordinato il Signore al suo servo Mosè, così comandò Mosè a Giosuè e così fece Giosuè: non trascurò nulla di quello che il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
16 So Joshua captured all this land: the mountain regions, the entire Negeb, all the land of Goshen, the foothills, the Arabah, as well as the mountain regions and foothills of Israel,	16 Così Giosuè prese tutto quel paese: le montagne, tutto il Negheb, tutta la terra di Gosen, il bassopiano, l'Araba, le montagne d'Israele e i loro bassipiani.
17 from Mount Halak that rises toward Seir as far as Baal-gad in the Lebanon valley at the foot of Mount Hermon. All their kings he captured and put to death.	17 Dal monte Calak, che sale verso Seir, fino a Baal-Gad, nella valle del Libano, ai piedi del monte Ermon; di tutti i loro re s'impadronì e li sconfisse e li fece uccidere.
18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time.	18 Molto tempo Giosuè ebbe a combattere con tutti quei re.
19 With the exception of the Hivites who lived in Gibeon, no city made peace with the Israelites; all were taken in battle.	19 Non ci fu una città che abbia fatto pace con i figli d'Israele, eccetto gli Evei che abitavano in Gabaon; perciò le presero tutte combattendo.
20 For it was the design of the LORD to encourage them to wage war against Israel, that they might be doomed to destruction and thus receive no mercy, but be exterminated, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	20 Tale era infatti il disegno del Signore, che il loro cuore si ostinasse a proclamare la guerra a Israele, affinché venissero votati allo sterminio senza pietà di loro e fossero estirpati, come aveva comandato il Signore a Mosè.
21 At that time Joshua penetrated the mountain regions and exterminated the Anakim in Hebron, Debir, Anab, the entire mountain region of Judah, and the entire mountain region of Israel. Joshua fulfilled the doom on them and on their cities,	21 In quel tempo Giosuè si mosse e sterminò anche gli Anakiti dalle montagne: da Ebron, da Debir, da Anab, da tutte le montagne di Giuda e da tutta la parte montana d'Israele e li votò, con le loro città, allo sterminio.
22 so that no Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites. However, some survived in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.	22 Non rimasero Anakiti nella terra dei figli d'Israele; rimasero soltanto a Gaza, a Gat e in Asdod.
23 Thus Joshua captured the whole country, just as the LORD had foretold to Moses. Joshua gave it to Israel as their heritage, apportioning it among the tribes. And the land enjoyed peace.	23 Giosuè così occupò tutto il paese, come aveva detto il Signore a Mosè e a Giosuè, e lo dette in eredità a Israele, secondo la loro ripartizione in tribù. Quindi il paese si riposò dalla guerra.
