NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.1 Iesus autem perrexit in montem Oliveti.
But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them.2 Diluculo autem iterum venit intemplum, et omnis populus veniebat ad eum, et sedens docebat eos.
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle.3 Adducuntautem scribae et pharisaei mulierem in adulterio deprehensam et statuerunt eamin medio
They said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.4 et dicunt ei: “ Magister, haec mulier manifesto deprehensa est inadulterio.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?"5 In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis huiusmodi lapidare; tu ergoquid dicis? ”.
They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.6 Hoc autem dicebant tentantes eum, ut possent accusare eum.Iesus autem inclinans se deorsum digito scribebat in terra.
But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."7 Cum autemperseverarent interrogantes eum, erexit se et dixit eis: “ Qui sine peccatoest vestrum, primus in illam lapidem mittat ”;
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.8 et iterum se inclinansscribebat in terra.
And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him.9 Audientes autem unus post unum exibant, incipientes asenioribus, et remansit solus, et mulier in medio stans.
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"10 Erigens autem seIesus dixit ei: “ Mulier, ubi sunt? Nemo te condemnavit? ”.
She replied, "No one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, (and) from now on do not sin any more."11 Quae dixit:“ Nemo, Domine ”. Dixit autem Iesus: “ Nec ego te condemno; vade etamplius iam noli peccare ”.
Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."12 Iterum ergo locutus est eis Iesus dicens: “ Ego sum lux mundi; qui sequiturme, non ambulabit in tenebris, sed habebit lucem vitae ”.
So the Pharisees said to him, "You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified."13 Dixerunt ergo eipharisaei: “ Tu de teipso testimonium perhibes; testimonium tuum non est verum”.
Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.14 Respondit Iesus et dixit eis: “ Et si ego testimonium perhibeo demeipso, verum est testimonium meum, quia scio unde veni et quo vado; vos autemnescitis unde venio aut quo vado.
You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone.15 Vos secundum carnem iudicatis, ego noniudico quemquam.
And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me.16 Et si iudico ego, iudicium meum verum est, quia solus nonsum, sed ego et, qui me misit, Pater.
Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified.17 Sed et in lege vestra scriptum est, quia duorum hominum testimonium verum est.
I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me."18 Ego sum, qui testimonium perhibeode meipso, et testimonium perhibet de me, qui misit me, Pater ”.
So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."19 Dicebantergo ei: “ Ubi est Pater tuus? ”. Respondit Iesus: “ Neque me scitis nequePatrem meum; si me sciretis, forsitan et Patrem meum sciretis ”.
He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.20 Haec verbalocutus est in gazophylacio docens in templo; et nemo apprehendit eum, quianecdum venerat hora eius.
He said to them again, "I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come."21 Dixit ergo iterum eis: “ Ego vado, et quaeretis me et in peccato vestromoriemini! Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire ”.
So the Jews said, "He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"22 Dicebant ergo Iudaei:“ Numquid interficiet semetipsum, quia dicit: “Quo ego vado, vos nonpotestis venire”? ”.
He said to them, "You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world.23 Et dicebat eis: “ Vos de deorsum estis, ego desupernis sum; vos de mundo hoc estis, ego non sum de hoc mundo.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."24 Dixi ergovobis quia moriemini in peccatis vestris; si enim non credideritis quia ego sum, moriemini in peccatis vestris ”.
So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.25 Dicebant ergo ei: “ Tu quis es? ”.Dixit eis Iesus: “ In principio: id quod et loquor vobis!
I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world."26 Multa habeo devobis loqui et iudicare; sed, qui misit me, verax est, et ego, quae audivi abeo, haec loquor ad mundum ”.
They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.27 Non cognoverunt quia Patrem eis dicebat.
So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me.28 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: “ Cum exaltaveritis Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetisquia ego sum et a meipso facio nihil, sed, sicut docuit me Pater, haec loquor.
The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him."29 Et qui me misit, mecum est; non reliquit me solum, quia ego, quae placitasunt ei, facio semper ”.
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.30 Haec illo loquente, multi crediderunt in eum.
Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,31 Dicebat ergo Iesus ad eos, qui crediderunt ei, Iudaeos: “ Si vos manseritisin sermone meo, vere discipuli mei estis
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."32 et cognoscetis veritatem, et veritasliberabit vos ”.
They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"33 Responderunt ei: “ Semen Abrahae sumus et neminiservivimus umquam! Quomodo tu dicis: “Liberi fietis”? ”.
Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.34 Respondit eisIesus: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Omnis, qui facit peccatum, servus est peccati.
A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains.35 Servus autem non manet in domo in aeternum; filius manet in aeternum.
So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free.36 Siergo Filius vos liberaverit, vere liberi eritis.
I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you.37 Scio quia semen Abrahaeestis; sed quaeritis me interficere, quia sermo meus non capit in vobis.
I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father."38 Ego,quae vidi apud Patrem, loquor; et vos ergo, quae audivistis a patre, facitis ”.
They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham.39 Responderunt et dixerunt ei: “ Pater noster Abraham est ”. Dicit eisIesus: “ Si filii Abrahae essetis, opera Abrahae faceretis.
But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.40 Nunc autemquaeritis me interficere, hominem, qui veritatem vobis locutus sum, quam audivia Deo; hoc Abraham non fecit.
You are doing the works of your father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God."41 Vos facitis opera patris vestri ”. Dixeruntitaque ei: “ Nos ex fornicatione non sumus nati; unum patrem habemus Deum! ”.
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.42 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Si Deus pater vester esset, diligeretis me; ego enim exDeo processi et veni; neque enim a meipso veni, sed ille me misit.
Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear my word.43 Quareloquelam meam non cognoscitis? Quia non potestis audire sermonem meum.
You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies.44 Vos expatre Diabolo estis et desideria patris vestri vultis facere. Ille homicida eratab initio et in veritate non stabat, quia non est veritas in eo. Cum loquiturmendacium, ex propriis loquitur, quia mendax est et pater eius.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.45 Ego autemquia veritatem dico, non creditis mihi.
Can any of you charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me?46 Quis ex vobis arguit me de peccato?Si veritatem dico, quare vos non creditis mihi?
Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to God."47 Qui est ex Deo, verba Deiaudit; propterea vos non auditis, quia ex Deo non estis ”.
The Jews answered and said to him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?"48 Responderunt Iudaei et dixerunt ei: “ Nonne bene dicimus nos, quiaSamaritanus es tu et daemonium habes? ”.
Jesus answered, "I am not possessed; I honor my Father, but you dishonor me.49 Respondit Iesus: “ Ego daemoniumnon habeo, sed honorifico Patrem meum, et vos inhonoratis me.
I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the one who judges.50 Ego autem nonquaero gloriam meam; est qui quaerit et iudicat.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death."51 Amen, amen dico vobis: Siquis sermonem meum servaverit, mortem non videbit in aeternum ”.
(So) the Jews said to him, "Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.'52 Dixeruntergo ei Iudaei: “ Nunc cognovimus quia daemonium habes. Abraham mortuus est etprophetae, et tu dicis: “Si quis sermonem meum servaverit, non gustabit mortemin aeternum”.
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?"53 Numquid tu maior es patre nostro Abraham, qui mortuus est? Etprophetae mortui sunt! Quem teipsum facis? ”.
Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'54 Respondit Iesus: “ Si egoglorifico meipsum, gloria mea nihil est; est Pater meus, qui glorificat me, quemvos dicitis: “Deus noster est!”,
You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.55 et non cognovistis eum. Ego autem novieum. Et si dixero: Non scio eum, ero similis vobis, mendax; sed scio eum etsermonem eius servo.
Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.56 Abraham pater vester exsultavit, ut videret diem meum;et vidit et gavisus est ”.
So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"57 Dixerunt ergo Iudaei ad eum: “ Quinquagintaannos nondum habes et Abraham vidisti? ”.
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."58 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Amen, amendico vobis: Antequam Abraham fieret, ego sum ”.
So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.59 Tulerunt ergo lapides, utiacerent in eum; Iesus autem abscondit se et exivit de templo.
