1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.	1 Io sono la vera vite, il Padre mio è il coltivatore.
2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.	2 Ogni tralcio che in me non porta frutto, lo taglierà via, e quello che porta frutto, lo poterà, perchè frutti di più.
3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.	3 Voi siete puri, in virtù della parola che vi ho annunziata.
4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.	4 Rimanete in me, ed io in voi. Come il tralcio non può da sè dare frutto, se non rimane unito alla vite, così nemmeno voi se non rimanete in me.
5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.	5 Io sono la vite, voi i tralci; se uno rimane in me ed io in lui, questo porta molto frutto; perchè senza di me non potete far niente.
6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.	6 Chi non rimane in me sarà gettato via come tralcio e seccherà, e, raccolto, sarà buttato nel fuoco a bruciare.
7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.	7 Se rimanete in me e rimangono in voi le mie parole, domanderete quel che vorrete e vi sarà fatto.
8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.	8 Il Padre mio è glorificato in questo: che portiate molto frutto e diventiate miei discepoli.
9 As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.	9 Come il Padre ha amato me, così io ho amato voi. Perseverate nell'amor mio.
10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.	10 Se osserverete i miei comandamenti persevererete nel mio amore, come io ho osservato i comandamenti del Padre mio e rimango nel suo amore.
11 "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.	11 V'ho detto questo, affinchè in voi dimori la mia gioia e la gioia vostra sia perfetta.
12 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.	12 Il comandamento mio è questo: che vi amiate scambievolmente come io ho amato voi!
13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.	13 Nessuno ha amore più grande di quello di colui che dà la vita per i suoi amici.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.	14 Voi siete miei amici se farete quello che vi comando.
15 I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.	15 Non vi chiamerò più servi, perchè il servo non sa quel che fa il padrone. Ma v'ho chiamati amici perchè v'ho fatto sapere tutto quello che ho udito dal Padre mio.
16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.	16 Non siete voi che avete eletto me, ma io ho eletto voi, e v'ho destinati perchè andiate e portiate frutti, e frutti duraturi: onde, qualunque cosa voi chiederete al Padre in nome mio Egli ve la concederà.
17 This I command you: love one another.	17 Questo v'ingiungo: di amarvi scambievolmente.
18 "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first.	18 Se il mondo vi odia, sappiate che prima di voi ha odiato me.
19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.	19 Se foste del mondo, il mondo amerebbe ciò che è suo, ma perchè non siete del mondo ed io vi ho eletti dal mondo, per questo il mondo vi odia.
20 Remember the word I spoke to you, 'No slave is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.	20 Ricordatevi della parola che vi ho detto: non si dà servo maggiore del padrone. Se hanno perseguitato me, perseguiteranno anche voi; se hanno osservata la mia parola, osserveranno anche la vostra.
21 And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.	21 Ma tutto questo ve lo faranno a causa del mio nome, perchè non conoscono colui che mi ha mandato.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin; but as it is they have no excuse for their sin.	22 Se non fossi venuto e non avessi parlato loro, non avrebbero colpa; ma ora non hanno scusa del loro peccato.
23 Whoever hates me also hates my Father.	23 Chi odia me, odia anche il Padre mio.
24 If I had not done works among them that no one else ever did, they would not have sin; but as it is, they have seen and hated both me and my Father.	24 Se non avessi fatto tra loro opere che nessun altro mai fece, sarebbero senza colpa; ma ora l'han già vedute, e hanno odiato me ed il Padre mio.
25 But in order that the word written in their law might be fulfilled, 'They hated me without cause.'	25 E ciò affinchè s'adempia la parola scritta nella legge: Mi odiarono senza ragione.
26 "When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.	26 Ma quando sarà venuto il Consolatore, ch'io vi manderò dal Padre, lo Spirito di verità che procede dal Padre, egli mi renderà testimonianza;
27 And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.	27 e voi pure mi renderete testimonianza, perchè siete stati con me fino da principio.
