Luke 4

1 Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert	1 Fil ed with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
2 for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.	2 for forty days being put to the test by the devil. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he washungry.
3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."	3 Then the devil said to him, 'If you are Son of God, tel this stone to turn into a loaf.'
4 Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"	4 But Jesus replied, 'Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone.'
5 Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.	5 Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time al the kingdoms of the world
6 The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.	6 and said to him, 'I wil give you al this power and their splendour, for it has been handed over to me, forme to give it to anyone I choose.
7 All this will be yours, if you worship me."	7 Do homage, then, to me, and it shal al be yours.'
8 Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"	8 But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: You must do homage to the Lord your God, him alone youmust serve.'
9 Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,	9 Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the parapet of the Temple. 'If you are Son of God,' he saidto him, 'throw yourself down from here,
10 for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'	10 for scripture says: He has given his angels orders about you, to guard you, and again:
11 and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"	11 They wil carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.'
12 Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"	12 But Jesus answered him, 'Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'
13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.	13 Having exhausted every way of putting him to the test, the devil left him, until the opportune moment.
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.	14 Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout thecountryside.
15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.	15 He taught in their synagogues and everyone glorified him.
16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read	16 He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath dayas he usually did. He stood up to read,
17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:	17 and they handed him the scrol of the prophet Isaiah. Unrol ing the scrol he found the place where it iswritten:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,	18 The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He hassent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."	19 to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.
20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.	20 He then rol ed up the scrol , gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."	21 Then he began to speak to them, 'This text is being fulfilled today even while you are listening.'
22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"	22 And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from hislips. They said, 'This is Joseph's son, surely?'
23 He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'"	23 But he replied, 'No doubt you will quote me the saying, "Physician, heal yourself," and tel me, "We have heard al that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own country." '
24 And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.	24 And he went on, 'In truth I tel you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.
25 Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.	25 'There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah's day, when heaven remained shut forthree years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land,
26 It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.	26 but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia.
27 Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."	27 And in the prophet Elisha's time there were many suffering from virulent skin-diseases in Israel, butnone of these was cured -- only Naaman the Syrian.'
28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.	28 When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
29 They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.	29 They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hilltheir town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff,
30 But he passed through the midst of them and went away.	30 but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.
31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath,	31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.
32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.	32 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,	33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at thetop of his voice,
34 "Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"	34 'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who youare: the Holy One of God.'
35 Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.	35 But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!' And the devil, throwing the man into themiddle, went out of him without hurting him at all.
36 They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."	36 Astonishment seized them and they were al saying to one another, 'What is it in his words? He givesorders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.'
37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.	37 And the news of him travel ed al through the surrounding countryside.
38 After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.	38 Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of ahigh fever and they asked him to do something for her.
39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.	39 Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to servethem.
40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.	40 At sunset al those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them tohim, and laying his hands on each he cured them.
41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah.	41 Devils too came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God.' But he warned them andwould not al ow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.	42 When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look forhim, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,
43 But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."	43 but he answered, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too,because that is what I was sent to do.'
44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.	44 And he continued his proclamation in the synagogues of Judaea.
