Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.2 For the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."3 And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread.
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"4 And Jesus answered him: It is written, that Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.5 And the devil led him into a high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time;
The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.6 And he said to him: To thee will I give all this power, and the glory of them; for to me they are delivered, and to whom I will, I give them.
All this will be yours, if you worship me."7 If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine.
Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"8 And Jesus answering said to him: It is written: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and he said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence.
for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'10 For it is written, that He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee.
and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"11 And that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"12 And Jesus answering, said to him: It is said: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.13 And all the temptation being ended, the devil departed from him for a time.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.14 And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit, into Galilee, and the fame of him went out through the whole country.
He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.15 And he taught in their synagogues, and was magnified by all.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read16 And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read.
and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:17 And the book of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. And as he unfolded the book, he found the place where it was written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."19 To preach deliverance to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of reward.
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.20 And when he had folded the book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."21 And he began to say to them: This day is fulfilled this scripture in your ears.
And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"22 And all gave testimony to him: and they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his mouth, and they said: Is not this the son of Joseph?
He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'"23 And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.
And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.
They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.
Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath,31 And he went down into Capharnaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the sabbath days.
and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech was with power.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean devil, and he cried out with a loud voice,
"Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"34 Saying: Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God.
Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Hold thy peace, and go out of him. And when the devil had thrown him into the midst, he went out of him, and hurt him not at all.
They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."36 And there came fear upon all, and they talked among themselves, saying: What word is this, for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out?
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.37 And the fame of him was published into every place of the country.
After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.38 And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.
He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.39 And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.
At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.40 And when the sun was down, all they that had any sick with divers diseases, brought them to him. But he laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.
And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah.41 And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ.
At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.42 And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place, and the multitudes sought him, and came unto him: and they stayed him that he should not depart from them.
But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."43 To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent.
And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
